Oops, I Accidentally Ascended to Godhood

Chapter 42: My damn luck

"Tarkan, don't you think this is… a bit much?" Slim asked, his skin back to its usual healthy glow, not the pale, drained look he had when he first exited the dimension.

He sat at the edge of a hot, steamy pond, watching a teenage boy lounge like a king.

Tarkan lay shirtless in the middle of the steaming pool, his lean frame half-submerged.

Several women in revealing dresses worked around him, massaging his shoulders and legs.

Different varieties of delicacies were arranged around him, and in one hand, he held a sparkling glass of red wine.

"Ah, Slim, Slim, Slim..." Tarkan turned to him, grinning. "How is this too much? Don't be a killjoy. Money's meant to be spent."

"But.."

"I live by a simple rule, the body that earns the money should enjoy the money," Tarkan said, lazily sipping from his glass.

"Ohhh…" Slim dragged the sound out awkwardly, like he didn't quite know how else to respond.

Tarkan glanced over his shoulder, eyes narrowing. "Why are you making that face?"

Cough, cough, cough!

He choked on his drink, sputtering before wiping his mouth. "I'm only borrowing it from you, okay?"

"Mmmhm.." Slim's expression didn't change, mocking yet playful, full of exaggerated understanding.

"You know," Tarkan sighed, "I put off increasing my strength just to look after you these past two days, That's dedication, man."

"Mmmhhm," Slim repeated, same knowing look in his eyes.

Tarkan let out a deep sigh, sounding like a deflating balloon.

He waved his hand dismissively, and all the girls bowed before quickly disappearing from the courtyard.

Stepping out of the pool, Tarkan wrapped a robe over himself, water dripping from his body.

He walked to the long table nearby and pulled out a chair across from Slim, sitting down with a relaxed plop.

"Just look at all this," he said, gesturing at the extravagant courtyard, the steaming dishes, the calm breeze. "Food, women, entertainment, all for a hundred gold coins a month! Slim, why shouldn't we enjoy ourselves? Everything in Tharn is dirt cheap.

You made over five thousand gold coins in just three days of being an ascender."

He paused to chomp down on what looked like a roasted turkey leg.

"And to be honest," he continued with his mouth half full, "even if this cost two thousand gold coins a month, I'd still spend it the same way, without a second thought.

Because only the living get to enjoy money. If you die, some random fatso somewhere who never worked for it gets to spend it for you."

Slim chuckled lightly but didn't say anything.

"If not for my damn luck, we'd already be set for years, living like royals," Tarkan muttered bitterly, biting into another turkey leg.

He couldn't help thinking about the awakened-tier Zumbra corpses and Cassian's space bag he'd lost during the fight.

Seeing Tarkan's mood shift, Slim spoke up, "Master, you don't need to repay me anything. This money is yours to use, and it's my..."

"Slim, I appreciate you a lot," Tarkan interrupted. "But from today on, whenever you want to spend your money, spend it. That's an order."

Slim scratched the back of his head, sheepish. "Sorry, Tarkan."

Tarkan saw the embarrassed look on his face and couldn't help but smile.

At least Slim wasn't as uptight as he had been when they first met.

Over the last couple of days, he'd started to loosen up, joking a bit, and acting more human.

Sigh...

Tarkan sighed in his thoughts.

There was this saying back on Earth, something like Rome wasn't built in two days? Or something along those lines. He wasn't really good with that stuff.

He snapped out of his thoughts and looked at Slim. "Once we're done eating, let's take a stroll. I'm feeling stuffy."

Slim gave a firm nod.

Meanwhile, back in the dimension…

About sixteen people could be seen. Two at the front held compass-like objects, leading the group.

SSSSSS...

Several members began drawing sharp breaths, gasping at the scene in front of them.

They came upon a field littered with Zumbra corpses, hundreds of bodies scattered across the land as far as the eye could see.

"Are you guys sure we're going the right way?" one man asked nervously, fear creeping into his voice like he was ready to wet himself. He looked at one of the compass holders.

The man holding the device glanced down, eyes wide with disbelief. He checked it again.

"We're on the right path," he confirmed in a grave tone.

Nervously scanning the area and seeing no threats, he braved himself and stepped forward into the carnage. Still seeing no danger, he loosened up.

Seeing nothing happened to him, the others exchanged looks, then cautiously followed him in.

Moments later..

"Found it!" one of them yelled.

In his hand was the now-dead Cassian's space storage bag, the very one Tarkan had lost.

As they drew closer, the compass started to glow, confirming this was what they had been tracking. This copy comes from content on M|V|L0EMPYR.

"Who did the Viral young master offend?" one of the men said, glancing around the apocalypse-like scene.

"Boss, do you think the person who killed the Viral family's young master did this?" another asked, turning to a young man in the group.

"This isn't something a single person could do. Even with eighteen of us, or fifty of us with maxed-out prime points, I wouldn't bet on escaping this place alive," the boss replied solemnly.

"Maybe someone with an S-rank talent?" someone suggested.

The boss turned to the speaker like he was looking at a fool.

"No matter the rank of talent, you need energy to fuel it. Even if there was an ability above S-rank, no one could use it on this scale in the first dimension," the boss explained.

He raised his voice, addressing the team. "Grab as many corpses as you can. Even if we can't use them, we'll get a decent amount of gold. Be quick. I'm not sticking around to find out what killed these things."

He himself moved forward to take part in the loot.

...

..

.

Sigh...

Humans and their endless greed.
