Chapter 522 The Cost of the Gods' Gifts (Two in One)
Kafu the Sixth was assassinated in the midst of the banquet.
His heir, Prince Mura, was subdued on the spot by the people of the Gold Silver Clan. Originally, the Gold Silver Clan wanted to kill him along with his father, but Aler stopped them.
"Spare his life, he's still of use,"
Aler said so.
He did so not out of kindness, nor did he really want to spare the life of Prince Mura, but because if they killed both the King and his heir, they would leave themselves no way out.
If only the King were slain, they could claim to have removed a tyrant and seek the support of the capital's citizens. However, if Mura were killed, things would become extremely complicated.
Aler's plan was simple: they launched a coup at the banquet with lightning speed, assassinated the King, took control of Prince Mura, then took over the Royal City, and finally propped up Prince Mura to ascend to the throne as their puppet. Once all the rebellions throughout the Kingdom were dealt with, they would depose Prince Mura.
Inside the banquet hall, the throne was drenched in blood, and the once harmonious guests had fled like birds and beasts. Aler and his allies, having taken control of Prince Mura, feared most the army's unwavering loyalty to the King.
The fierce resistance of the Imperial Guard and the bloody suppression by the legions during the previous uprising had left a deep impression on them.
"Luckily, when that tyrant went on campaign, he had taken away many of the Imperial Guard, and most of his legions were left at the border,"
After calculating, Aler ordered people to find the King's Forging Hammer,
"Find the hammer, then tell those soldiers, the King orders them to lay down all arms and not to create too much chaos, as it would be adverse for us.
Again, I emphasize, we can accept chaos, but it must be limited."
Soon after, following a large-scale search, the Dwarves of the Gold Silver Clan found Kafu the Sixth's clan Forging Hammer, and, following Aler's instructions, they hastened to the legion's camp outside the city, ordering the soldiers there to disarm in compliance with the order.
In the midst of the chaos, the Gold Silver Clan's actions were inconceivably swift.
Guests ran in all directions, and not many had heard about the assassination of the King, let alone the information reaching the legions camped outside the city. When the Dwarves of the Gold Silver Clan appeared before the Legion Commanders with the King's Forging Hammer, out of fear of the King's authority and obedience to him, the Commanders did not hesitate to disarm.
Thus, by dawn the next day, the premeditated Gold Silver Clan not only controlled the Prince, but also the Royal City. Under the King's name, they declared the King to be seriously ill and began martial law in the Royal City.
Many Dwarves still did not know the King was dead. Their thoughts were in disarray, unclear about what had happened, and they simply followed the martial law orders in confusion.
In the chaotic Royal City, the death of the King spread like a mere rumor.
The success of this coup surprised even the Gods.
"I thought we'd need our Priests to help persuade those Dwarves,"
The Storm God Utus commented with astonishment.
Despite this proud Divine being disdainful of tricks and schemes, They took pleasure in the approaching civil war among the Dwarves.
"It looks like Aler and Nelson did better than we imagined,"
The Dream God Laren did not skimp on Their praise.
Everything was proceeding according to the plan.
The Wine God Sibos watched Kaelonde, scoffing:
"I reckon those Dwarves of the Gold Silver Clan believe they can really rule the entire Kingdom."
Hearing this, the other Divines burst out laughing; it was a mockery of the mortals' arrogance, their foolishness.
Aler and his cohorts hoped to take over the entire Kingdom after causing the least chaos possible, and for this reason, they spared Prince Mura's life.
But the Divine beings were not pleased to see it happen.
The Gold Silver Clan had the assistance of the Divine; they learned the truth of the war and, under the incitement of Priests like Nelson, they assassinated the King.
Without a doubt, they accepted many gifts.
However,
to accept the gifts of the Divine always comes at a certain cost.
The Divine beings wanted to see the Kaelonde Kingdom plunged into devastating civil strife; whether it was the Gold Silver Clan taking power, Prince Mura reclaiming authority, or some lowly Clan reaching the apex of power meant little to these Divinities that had lived for thousands of years.
"So... Laren, what should be done with that mortal you encountered before?"
At that moment, the Storm God Utus asked.
The Dream God Laren went rigid for a moment, as the painful memory surfaced in Their mind.
They would not forget what They had seen in the depths of that person's dreams.
And the damage that radiant light had inflicted upon Them had not healed to this day.
As such in terms of Divine Power, the Fourth Rank Dream God Laren was now no different from a Third Rank Divine.
"We can't confront him directly again; we cannot afford the cost,"
The Dream God Laren took a deep breath and said:
"However, we can let the mortals we have chosen carry out our will."
Laren's words earned the agreement of the other Divinities.
A direct confrontation with a mortal was not only a violation of the Divine's status but also a breach of the Law, besides, that mortal was no ordinary being.
"Trust me, a mere mortal cannot reverse the trend of destruction."
