Chapter 464: Crimson Hyena

As they travelled deeper into contested regions between territorial boundaries, the forest gradually began changing around them. The managed ecosystem of Golden Mane territory gave way to something altogether more sinister and disturbing.

The first indication that they were approaching hyena-controlled areas came in the form of territorial markers that were fundamentally different from the claw scratches that had defined Pride's former domain.

Just like the golden beetle had said before, skeletal remains began appearing with increasing frequency, not scattered randomly as natural deaths might produce, but arranged in patterns that spoke of intelligence and artistic mind. Human-like ribcages formed archways over natural pathways, while skulls of various creatures were stacked in pyramid formations that served both as territorial warnings and macabre sculptures.

The displays escalated in complexity and disturbing detail as they penetrated deeper into hyena territory. Entire skeletons were posed in tableaux that told stories of their victims' final moments—creatures frozen in positions of terror, desperation, or futile attempts at escape. The bone arrangements possessed a quality that suggested the hyenas took genuine pleasure in creating these psychological monuments.

Arthur frowned at the increasingly elaborate displays, his expression carrying disgust rather than fear or intimidation. The skeletal gardens reminded him of badly produced horror movies that relied on shock value rather than being genuinely scary. While the psychological intent was obvious, the execution struck him as crude and unnecessary.

"Disgusting," Arthur muttered as they passed a particularly elaborate bone sculpture that depicted a family of animals in their final moments of terror. "They're trying too hard to be frightening. True power doesn't need such obvious displays."

The macabre decorations continued for several kilometres, each arrangement more disturbing than the previous one. Bones were woven into tree branches like grotesque wind chimes, while pathways were lined with skull markers that created corridors of death leading deeper into the territory.

Despite the increasingly unsettling environment, Arthur remained alert for more practical concerns. Based on the Golden Beetle's detailed briefings about hyena capabilities, the Cackle Queen represented a fundamentally different type of threat than the straightforward physical challenges posed by the Golden Manes.

The hyena pack specialised in psychological warfare, illusion techniques, and mental manipulation that could compromise an opponent's decision-making capabilities before physical combat even began. Their hunting methodology relied on inducing paralysing fear that left victims helpless while the pack moved in for leisurely kills.

Arthur's enhanced mental defences should provide significant protection against such tactics, but complacency in the face of superior-rank or perhaps legendary-rank psychological predators would be foolish. The Cackle Queen had earned her reputation through the successful elimination of creatures who had underestimated her capabilities.

"Stay alert," Arthur instructed both Pride and Aether as they approached what appeared to be the territory's inner regions. "The queen should be an illusion-type beast, and I need to remain vigilant before falling into any traps she might have prepared."

Pride's mental acknowledgement carried understanding of the situation, while his pace shifted from maximum speed to cautious advancement that would allow for immediate combat response if necessary.

The bone gardens around them had become so elaborate that they resembled outdoor museums dedicated to death and suffering, each display more psychologically disturbing than anything Arthur had encountered in his experience.

Yet despite their obvious artistic skill and psychological intent, Arthur found himself more annoyed than intimidated by the macabre theatrics surrounding them.

True power, in his experience, spoke for itself without requiring such obvious attempts at psychological manipulation.

The Cackle Queen was about to learn that lesson personally.

...

As they moved deeper into the bone-laden territory, Arthur's senses detected movement in the shadows between the macabre sculptures. His perception, sharpened by countless battles and supernatural enhancement, immediately identified the source—a crimson hyena stalking through the skeletal garden with evil intent.

The creature moved with the confident swagger of a predator in its own domain, unaware that it had just become prey for something far more dangerous than anything it had encountered before. Its crimson fur identified it as one of the Laughing Death pack, while its eyes held the cruel intelligence that further proved that characterisation.

Without wasting a second, Arthur activated his spatial manipulation talent.

WHOOSH!

Reality folded around him as he teleported directly beside the unsuspecting hyena, appearing so close that their eyes met for a brief instant before the creature could process what had happened. Arthur's hand shot forward with speed that exceeded the hyena's ability to react.

His fingers closed around the creature's neck like a serpent coiling around its prey, lifting the struggling predator off the ground despite its considerable size and strength. The hyena's eyes widened with shock and growing terror as it realised it had encountered something completely outside its experience.

CRACK!

Arthur's grip tightened without a moment's notice, applying exactly the amount of force necessary to snap the creature's cervical vertebrae. The sound was loud and final, echoing through the bone garden like a period at the end of a sentence.

The epic-ranked hyena's struggles ceased immediately, its body going limp as its soul fled from its body. For a creature that had specialised in inflicting psychological terror on its victims, death came with surprising swiftness.

Arthur released his grip, allowing the hyena's body to drop to the ground among the skeletal remains that decorated its territory. The irony wasn't lost on him—the predator had become another corpse to add to the macabre collection it had helped create.

"Pathetic," Arthur observed with detachment. "Epic-rank creatures should provide more resistance than that. I still remember when Sunless almost killed me back in that realm. I really was too weak back then."

Without delay, Arthur activated his Primordial Summoner talent, placing his hand on the fallen hyena's form.

"Awaken," he commanded.

The familiar portal of darkness appeared beneath the creature's body, swallowing it into the dimensional space where Arthur's summoned entities resided when not actively manifested. The process took only moments before the portal transformed, preparing to return the hyena in its original form.
