Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Free Fortune-Telling
Jiang Kai frowned but eventually walked over.
"What do you want from me?"
The man smiled eagerly. "Of course, something important."
Jiang Kai said impatiently, "What exactly? If you don't say, I'm leaving."
"Wait, wait, wait!" The man quickly grabbed Jiang Kai. "I'm a fortune-teller." He looked at Jiang Kai with a knowing gaze.
"Fortune-teller?" Jiang Kai frowned. He seemed to have run into one of those street swindlers pulling people for fortune-telling.
"Hey, don't look at me like that. Feng Shui Masters are one of the top ten professions in Huaxia, and fortune-tellers are the second-tier profession of Feng Shui Masters. My abilities speak for themselves." the man hurriedly explained.
'Fortune-telling?'
"Not interested." Jiang Kai said coldly and turned to leave.
"Hey!" The man grabbed Jiang Kai again, his face practically begging. "Just give me a chance."
"No money!" Jiang Kai insisted and kept walking.
"You brat, why are you like this." The man looked aggrieved. "I'm not here to eat you alive. I just want to tell you which direction will bring you luck."
Jiang Kai looked at the man, tired of this nonsense. This guy was indeed an expert salesperson, mastering the skill of clinging like a leech.
"I already told you, I have no money." Jiang Kai sighed. "I'm really not interested."
The man looked Jiang Kai up and down, frowning as if he were internally debating something.
A moment later, he said, "Fine, I'll give you a free reading this time."
"Free? What's your angle here?"
"My angle?" The man snorted, his previously sly expression now full of unwavering determination. "To prove that I'm an excellent fortune-teller."
"Also, I need to accumulate professional experience. You know, there's this theory that if you lack professional experience, it's easy to fail when advancing to extraordinary professions… But that's not the point. The main thing is proving myself."
Jiang Kai coldly stared at the man. Such lofty ideals didn't quite match his sneaky, crafty appearance.
"Listen, friend. Success doesn't rely on luck alone. You need the right timing, location, and people working together. Without any of these, you'll fail," the man said seriously, suddenly looking professional.
"Anyway, it's free. What's the harm in trying?"
Hearing this, Jiang Kai couldn't help but think twice.
'This guy… could he be sent by Huang Da to figure out where he was heading, so they could kill him in the wild?'
But then again, this guy looked too goofy. Would Huang Da really send someone like him?
Either way, Jiang Kai decided to let him do the reading. He could always decide whether to believe it later.
"This is my business card," the man said, handing him a card.
Jiang Kai glanced at it.
[Hu Banxian, Professional Fortune-Teller, Level 2 Member of the Feng Shui Guild. Talent: Trinity (Tier 2) – Increases perception of connections between Timing, Location, and People by 50%.]
[Based in the Eighteenth District Safe Zone.]
'This guy put his talent right on his business card? Truly a weirdo.'
Aside from being in the profession's guild, he didn't seem to be part of any other group.
Jiang Kai tried putting the card into his card pouch, but no matter how hard he tried, it wouldn't go in.
"What's going on? Is my card pouch broken?" Jiang Kai asked, puzzled.
"It's not that. I made this card myself, so the system doesn't recognize it," Hu Banxian said casually.
Jiang Kai nearly spat blood. "Brother, why didn't you say so earlier?"
"That's not the point." Hu Banxian insisted. "My name is Hu Yan."
"Not Hu Banxian?"
"That's a name I gave myself. After all, my real name… tends to cause misunderstandings."
Jiang Kai thought about it. Good lord, with a name like Hu Yan (which sounds like "nonsense"), it really would cause misunderstandings.
"Anyway, back to business. I've been watching you, and I feel like you're a bit unusual," Hu Yan said. "There's a layer of mist surrounding you. This situation is very rare. On top of that, I see black energy circling the mist, which means you're probably in some kind of crisis right now."
Jiang Kai just listened, making no comment.
What Hu Yan said sounded plausible. After offending the Huang family, Jiang Kai's current situation was indeed very dangerous.
But scammers often spoke this kind of vague nonsense because people would always find ways to make it sound accurate for themselves.
"What level are you?"
"Level 5," Jiang Kai replied.
"As expected. Five is a central number, capable of rising or falling infinitely. It signifies you're in a major crisis but also on the verge of a massive opportunity. Five belongs to Yang Earth. Of the four known regions—Zhulu Ridge (Wood), King's Valley (Earth), Taiping Path (Water), and Ash Plains (Fire)—Wood counters Earth, and Earth counters Water. So, my recommendation is that you go to King's Valley first, with Taiping Path as your second option."
Jiang Kai felt like he was listening to utter nonsense. He never should have agreed to this.
"That's it?"
"It's free. What more do you expect?" Hu Yan said with a nod. "Listen, if I'm right, remember to come back to me next time."
"Of course, I'll charge you next time."
Jiang Kai frowned slightly. He figured there wouldn't be a next time.
"Fine." Jiang Kai said, ready to leave when Hu Yan stopped him again.
"Hey, kid. You're the first person I've done a reading for today, so it must be fate. Here, take these four information cards."
"What's this?" Jiang Kai asked, looking disgusted.
"These are good stuff. They have monster details for the four regions."
Jiang Kai frowned. "Isn't that already on the map?"
"The map only has basic beast details. My cards contain information on Elites, Beast Kings, and Lord-tier monsters. These sell for dozens of star coins each outside." Hu Yan said, stuffing the cards into Jiang Kai's hands. "Remember to come back to me next time."
Jiang Kai reluctantly accepted them. This guy was being oddly generous; who knew what his real motives were.
Whatever. Jiang Kai finally left the safe zone.
From afar, Hu Yan watched Jiang Kai disappear into the distance, breathing a long sigh of relief.
"That kid's fate is truly a mystery. If I can decipher it, it'll be a huge boost to my professional experience."
"Wait… is he alone?" Hu Yan's eyes widened in shock. "A level 5 guy heading out of the safe zone alone—he's crazy."
———
After leaving the safe zone, Jiang Kai quickly came to a fork in the road.
A sign stood beside it: "Zhulu Ridge" to the east, "King's Valley," "Taiping Path," and "Ash Plains" to the right.
Jiang Kai pulled up his map to check.
The map listed the recommended levels:
Zhulu Ridge: Level 5–30 (small squads).
King's Valley: Level 10–40.
Taiping Path: Level 15–45.
Ash Plains: Level 20–50.
These levels were all for Tier 1 professions. For Tier 2, the calculations would be different.
At Jiang Kai's current level, Zhulu Ridge was the safest choice, but only in the lowest-level zones.
"The Black Tortoise Guild must think I'll head for Zhulu Ridge…" Jiang Kai thought, immediately crossing it off.
"That fortune-telling guy… is he really with Huang Da?" Jiang Kai considered Hu Yan's suggestions. If he was working for Huang Da, he wouldn't have offered two options.
Besides, given Hu Yan's crazy behavior, Jiang Kai doubted Huang Da would trust him with such a task.
"King's Valley requires level 10 minimum, assuming a squad of five. That means it's designed for five level 10s."
After weighing his options, Jiang Kai concluded that beasts were less dangerous than the Black Tortoise Guild.
"King's Valley it is!" he decided, heading toward the right path.
