Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Training Content
"Um… I'd really like to know what exactly you're here for?"
Shinji finally broke the silence, glancing at Fubuki, who was still lounging like she lived there.
"It's nothing serious," she replied casually. "I just wanted to come and check in."
"That's… understandable." Shinji muttered under his breath, eyeing the empty snack containers on the table.
Before either of them could say more, the doorbell rang again.
Fubuki, sitting closest, got up without hesitation and went to answer it.
"Master, it's me," came Genos's voice as the door opened.
But instead of Shinji, he was met with Fubuki.
Genos paused mid-step, slightly caught off guard by the sight of her. He took in her heels at the door, her relaxed posture, and the faint scent of tea still lingering in the air.
"Fubuki… are you living with Master Shinji now?" he asked, dead serious. Are they dating now?!
"Eh…?" Fubuki blinked, clearly unprepared for that. "No, I'm just visiting."
"Oh, I see." Genos exhaled with visible relief.
If his master really was living with a woman, moving in would've made things awkward for everyone involved.
Still gripping the handle of a comically oversized luggage bag, Genos turned sideways and dragged it into the apartment. The thing was nearly twice his size and looked like it could fit an entire mecha suit inside.
Fubuki stared at it, then at him. "Genos… what is all this?"
Shinji, arms crossed, already had a guess. "You're moving in, aren't you?"
"Master, can I live here with you?" Genos asked without hesitation.
"You could stay in the empty unit next door," Shinji offered, jerking his thumb toward it.
Genos paused to consider. "That works."
It made sense. He wouldn't intrude too much, but he'd still be close enough to observe and follow Shinji's training firsthand.
Truthfully, Genos didn't even need a proper room. He could easily enter standby mode in a corner of the living room. But he could tell from Shinji's face that such a sight would not be welcome.
Without another word, Genos darted off next door and dumped the luggage in the vacant apartment. He didn't clean or organize anything, just dumped the bag and zipped right back.
Relaxing wasn't part of his mission. His goal was to document everything—every move, every word, every glance—regarding Master Shinji's training.
He pulled out a notebook, sat at the table, and immediately began sketching. Diagrams, annotations, flowcharts, everything went in.
Across the table, Fubuki had now shifted into a more refined posture. Gone was the casual snacking; she watched Genos with curiosity and a hint of confusion.
She leaned closer to Shinji and whispered, "Is he always like this…?"
"You have no idea." Shinji nodded with a resigned sigh.
Genos, of course, heard them. But he didn't mind. He actually paused and added a new sketch to his notes, Shinji and Fubuki whispering across the table.
Apparently, that counted as part of training too.
"Genos," Shinji said suddenly, his tone shifting into something more serious.
"!"
Genos instantly sat up straighter and placed his pen down with both hands, eyes fixed on his master.
"Master… are you finally going to tell me the real contents of your training?"
Hearing that, Fubuki turned her focus to Shinji as well, clearly curious. She wanted to find out what sort of special training a powerhouse like him would pass down to an S-Class hero like Genos.
"First of all," Shinji began seriously, "since you're a cyborg, most traditional training methods are useless for you."
Genos nodded, listening intently.
"But you can still keep breaking through," Shinji continued. "The fastest path to growth for someone like you is to survive adversity. Facing stronger and stronger enemies is what sharpens you. Even if your physical body doesn't change much, your spirit, your will, can become more resilient. I see real potential in you."
"Yes, sir!"
Genos's eyes lit up as if something had finally clicked. Shinji-sensei's words landed like a revelation, simple but profound.
"I'll give it everything I've got! I won't let you down, Master!" he said, rising to his feet with a salute-like motion, his voice filled with conviction.
"Good. Keep it up."
Shinji gave a small nod of approval.
What he said wasn't just for encouragement; it was the truth. Genos's biggest leaps in strength always came after near-destruction. Each time he was nearly obliterated by a powerful opponent, Dr. Kuseno would rebuild him stronger than before. That cycle was both brutal and effective.
But really, that was all Shinji could tell him. He'd only said it hoping Genos would stop obsessively documenting every blink and breath he took. But the second he finished talking, Genos sat right back down and resumed scribbling furiously in his notebook, more detailed diagrams, more annotations, more ridiculous sketches.
"..."
Shinji sighed, already giving up on trying to stop him.
Forget it. Let him do what he wants...
Just then, Fubuki spoke up.
"Shinji, do you have any training methods you could teach me?"
"No idea."
He didn't even blink. Just answered flatly like it wasn't even up for discussion.
"Uh…"
Fubuki clearly hadn't expected a blunt shutdown like that.
"I sincerely apologize again for what I did earlier..." she said quickly, thinking he was still holding a grudge over the whole 'joining the Blizzard Group without consent' thing.
She didn't want things to stay tense between them.
"I accept your apology," Shinji said. "But I'm being honest, I really don't know any training methods that would suit you."
He let out a sigh. "You're an esper. You'd probably be better off learning from your sister."
"No way..."
Her face stiffened immediately. The second her sister was mentioned, her whole mood dipped. Her discomfort was obvious.
Shinji noticed but didn't press the issue. He already had a pretty good idea about the complicated relationship between Fubuki and Tatsumaki.
Still, Fubuki recovered quickly. A few seconds later, she was right back to nibbling on snacks like nothing had happened.
Internally though, she was calculating just how many calories she'd consumed since arriving. It was way over her usual limit. She made a mental note to cut back during dinner.
That's how she stayed in such top-tier shape: strict tracking, no excuses.
"By the way, Master… your eyes," Genos suddenly said, his mechanical gaze narrowing. "Did they change?"
He'd seen Shinji's black eyes before. He'd even seen the standard Sharingan. But the pattern now? That was definitely something new.
"They really did change," Fubuki said quickly, now leaning in with interest.
"I've always thought your eyes looked a little strange," she added, narrowing her own eyes slightly. "But now they've got this pattern, and the shape's different too."
She leaned in so close Shinji could actually feel the warmth of her breath brushing against his face.
Without thinking, he leaned back slightly, resisting the urge to scoot away. Fubuki might be weak, but her body alone was OP for a different reason.
