Chapter 96: CHAPTER 96
"You can try." Rin was already braced to repel Van der Decken IX's assault. Beside him burned the Flame Barrier of Light an ability derived from his Pika Pika no Mi that reduced anything within reach to ash, including, potentially, Van der Decken IX himself.
"Ugh!" Van der Decken IX charged toward Rin with sudden aggression his speed surprising. Perhaps it was Rin's provocations, or perhaps it was desperation but his hands moved rapidly, pulling out flintlocks and loading bullets at an incredible speed for a fish-man. In a flash, his figure vanished into the dim bar but Rin didn't flinch. He knew his words had struck deep enough to drive Van der Decken to a reckless frenzy.
"That's more like it." Rin raised his guard, eyes alert, prepared for Van der Decken IX to emerge from any angle, claws or bullets aimed to kill.
"Poof, poof."
Suddenly, a cluster of bullets whizzed through the air. Almost immediately after, a barrage followed from every corner of the room.
"Fast... but still too weak." Rin observed calmly as each bullet made contact with the barrier only to vaporize upon contact, as though each one had been drawn to their end like moths to a flame.
"Just watch!"
Van der Decken IX's voice echoed from everywhere his movements so quick he was no longer visible to the naked eye. But Rin, experienced with high-speed combat through mastery of Soru, could sense his opponent's presence surrounding him like a circling shark.
The gunfire intensified bullets rained from every direction, hammering the flame barrier again and again. It held at first, resisting the assault, but soon faint fractures appeared like spiderwebs of light. Still, the bullets didn't stop. The cracks spread until finally with a soft pop—"Bang." The barrier burst like a bubble.
"Rin Pandora, DIE!!"
Van der Decken IX's voice was almost gleeful as the relentless bullets surged toward the now-exposed Rin.
"Hmph, child's play."
With an instant glow, Rin's body transformed into pure photons—he shot upward, flying across the room in a golden beam, evading the barrage entirely. The bullets, still marked by the Mato Mato no Mi's homing ability, changed direction midair to follow but they collided and clattered to the ground uselessly once Rin moved out of range.
"What—what?! You're not using the Flame Flame Fruit?! Then how did you what is this?!"
Van der Decken IX shouted in disbelief. At first glance, he had assumed Rin was a user of the Mera Mera no Mi, because of the intense flames but now he realized: it was light, not fire. The attack was searing, but it held none of fire's properties.
"Surprised?" Rin's voice was sharp. "Now that you know my secret, I have even more reason to make sure you don't leave this place alive."
Whether Van der Decken saw the truth or not didn't matter. Rin had already resolved to end this.
Without further words, Van der Decken IX lunged upward again. Something glinted in his hand a weapon. He swung it with both arms down toward Rin.
"Clang!"
The clash of steel rang out, sharp and heavy.
"You—you're a swordsman too?!"
Van der Decken IX nearly bit through his tongue. The man before him wasn't just a pirate with Devil Fruit powers he was a prodigy. A Shichibukai at a young age, master of more than one ability, trained in Rokushiki, proficient in Haki, and now, a sword master?
"That's right. Now that you've seen what I can do still think you stand a chance?"
Rin's tone was calm, almost pitying. He saw the shift in Van der Decken's face that creeping realization that he was hopelessly outmatched.
And Rin's mind wandered for a moment if this got out, if people learned what he could do… Two outcomes were likely. One: he would become a target of every major force in the world, hunted for his rare powers and weapons. Two: he would be killed before he could rise. Because someone like him wielding multiple abilities, capable of mastering both light and steel posed a threat no Yonko or World Government would tolerate.
Now, Rin and Van der Decken were locked in a blade clash. At some point, Van der Decken IX had drawn a curved katana from who-knows-where, aiming to split Rin's skull with a surprise downward slash. But Rin's reflexes were on par with admirals he reached into his dimensional space ring and drew his own blade, intercepting the strike in a perfect block.
"Boom!"
Steel met steel in a brilliant clash. Van der Decken's eyes narrowed Rin's blade felt different. It rang with a deep, resonant tone.
"Your sword… that's no ordinary blade!"
He spoke the thought aloud but to his dismay, Rin beat him to it.
"Yours isn't bad either."
Rin noticed immediately during the clash Van der Decken's sword had remarkable density and edge, almost rivaling his own weapon, Raijin's Wrath, a blade forged to channel light-energy and Haki alike.
"This sword was passed down through my family one of my ancestors was a great swordsman in Fish-Man history," Van der Decken boasted, reverting to his usual prideful tone. Even in a life-or-death moment, he couldn't resist showing off.
"Thanks. I'll be taking it after I kill you."
Rin's words were cold and absolute. He saw no point letting a blade of that quality remain in the hands of a doomed man.
"Then come take it!"
Van der Decken tightened his grip. He had never used the heirloom blade before, but now on the verge of defeat he had no choice but to unleash everything.
