Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Checking In at the Weapon Shop
Loguetown, the gateway to the Grand Line from the East Blue.
Because of its special geographical location…
Marines, pirates, bounty hunters, merchants, tourists…
People of all sorts converged here.
The endless sea of pedestrians and dazzling goods turned the entire town into a massive open marketplace.
Shops, markets, and transport companies lined the streets.
Bars, inns, and entertainment districts had sprung up in kind.
They brought a flood of wealth, and no shortage of chaos.
After disembarking, Smoker walked leisurely down the street. He wore a black jacket and had a pendant dangling from his neck.
He had been here before. The prosperity of Loguetown had left quite an impression.
But something felt different this time.
There were just too many people. Even the wide streets now felt cramped.
Not only were there locals, merchants, and Marines, but also characters rarely seen elsewhere.
Arrogant nobles in luxurious robes, parading with entourages.
Menacing pirates radiating bloodlust and violent energy.
Elite Marines clearly above East Blue standards.
Stern government agents in dark suits.
And others who seemed ordinary… yet set off Smoker's instincts in a way that said they were anything but.
[World Government, nobles, Marines, pirates… even the Revolutionary Army and underground forces are hiding in plain sight…]
[No doubt, this is the eye of the storm in the Great Pirate Era. Just standing here gets my blood pumping!]
Smoker's thoughts were interrupted by a voice.
"Sir! Are you in need of weapons? Come take a look!"
"Our shop may be small, but it's been in business for over a century! Our weapons are top quality and affordably priced, guaranteed to satisfy!"
Smoker turned and found himself standing in front of a weapons shop.
The young shopkeeper at the door was thin, with a red alcoholic nose and a calculating look in his eyes.
Behind him, a tall and rotund woman, presumably the shop's madam, was tending to customers inside.
The pair looked downright comedic together.
Smoker immediately recognized the man and blurted out,
"Ipponmatsu?!"
Indeed, this was the same man who would one day sell Zoro both the Sandai Kitetsu and Yubashiri.
"Oh? You know me? Fantastic!" the young man said eagerly.
"Come on in, I'll give you a discount!"
Smoker glanced around the shop, curious. Compared to the anime, it was much smaller and more rundown.
Still, it looked like Ipponmatsu had managed to "hustle", no, run the place rather successfully over the years.
Zoro's sword-testing scene was a classic moment in One Piece.
Since he was already here… how could he not check in?
Smoker nodded and stepped inside.
The shop might have been small, but it was well stocked.
Guns, swords, armor, morning stars, spiked clubs, everything you could think of.
In the corner, he even spotted a jitte…
He picked it up and gave it a test swing. It actually felt decent in his hand.
But he paid no mind to Ipponmatsu's endless sales pitch and returned the jitte to its shelf.
He had zero interest in using it.
In the world of pirates, the strongest often wielded crude weapons.
A sword, a fist, a club… even sandals.
But a jitte? That thing just screamed "weak."
Then, behind the door, he spotted a barrel full of swords. Smoker's eyes lit up. He walked over, eager to dig through it.
He searched thoroughly, but found no sign of the Sandai Kitetsu.
[Wait… could it be that the Sandai Kitetsu hasn't arrived here yet?]
[Zoro's sword test is still over a decade away. Makes sense.]
Smoker wasn't particularly interested in swordsmanship. He'd just been hoping to score a rare find.
After all, the Kitetsu was only 50,000 Berries to buy, and could be flipped for millions.
Free money like that? Who wouldn't want to cash in?
Unfortunately, he came up empty-handed.
Clicking his tongue in mild disappointment, he resumed browsing the shop.
Suddenly, a commotion erupted outside.
Ipponmatsu dashed out to check.
A loud crash followed, and he came flying back in, smacking directly into the shop madam.
Thankfully, she was solid enough to catch him safely.
Still, both of them, just ordinary businessfolk, now looked terrified as they stared toward the door.
The next second, two furious pirates stormed in.
One of them held a sword in his hand, none other than the Sandai Kitetsu!
"You damn scammer! What kind of crap sword did you sell us?! Our captain used this in battle and not only failed to win, he hurt himself! Either give us an explanation, or we'll tear this place down!"
Ipponmatsu trembled. "Sirs… no, great sirs! There must be some mistake! That sword is the real Sandai Kitetsu, I swear!"
One pirate kicked a weapon rack into splinters.
"You trying to say our captain's the one who sucks at swordsmanship?! That he hurt himself because he's incompetent?!"
The other pirate slowly unsheathed his blade as well.
"Our captain is the infamous Black Wolf, a swordsman with a bounty of 2.6 million!"
"You dare insult his skills?! That disgrace… can only be repaid with your life!"
The two began to close in on the shopkeeper couple.
By now, all the other customers had fled.
Only Ipponmatsu, his wife, and Smoker remained.
Suddenly, Smoker stepped out from behind a display rack.
"I've seen enough," he said coldly. "Pirates who can't even handle their blades have no right calling themselves swordsmen."
He hadn't planned to interfere.
In the original story, Ipponmatsu and his wife survived just fine, meaning there should've been no need to intervene.
But who knew what sort of butterfly effect his presence might trigger?
Best to step in early.
"Who the hell are you?!"
"You got a death wish?!"
The two pirates turned toward him, eyes filled with murderous rage.
"If your captain's so weak that he can't even wield a cursed blade properly, then maybe he should be fighting with a stick instead."
The one holding the Kitetsu roared and charged, blade raised high to strike Smoker down.
Smoker sidestepped calmly and spoke again, "Though… I'll admit you were right about one thing."
As he said it, he slammed a fist into the pirate's gut.
The blow lifted the man clean off the ground. His body curled in midair like a shrimp as he coughed up blood.
Smoker snatched the Kitetsu from his hand and, without hesitation, twisted his neck until it snapped, then tossed the body aside like trash.
Seeing this, the other pirate turned pale and began trembling uncontrollably.
He wanted to run, but his legs felt like they'd been filled with lead…
Smoker turned the Kitetsu over in his hands, examining it.
"...Yeah, this blade is strange. No doubt, it's a cursed sword."
He caught Ipponmatsu and his wife staring at him with wide, reverent eyes.
A sudden urge to show off bubbled up inside him.
"Cursed blades have a will of their own," he said seriously. "Only those recognized by the sword can truly master them."
"To wield the Sandai Kitetsu, you need a willingness to die, and a heart strong enough to bear the weight."
"Watch closely."
He tossed the sword into the air and held out his arm like Zoro once did.
"My fate and this cursed blade… are they truly, "
Thunk!
Pain exploded through his forearm. The blade had stabbed straight into his arm, lodging deep into his flesh.
Smoker: "…"
Ipponmatsu & Madam: "…"
Pirate: "…"
Scowling, Smoker yanked the blade out and shouted, "Damn pirate! You jinxed it!"
"Eh?! What are you, ahhh!!"
A final scream rang out as the remaining pirate dropped twitching to the floor.
Soon after, Marines arrived and took both pirates into custody.
They also dispatched a squad to track down this so-called "Black Wolf."
As for Smoker, he was already gone, the Sandai Kitetsu now in his possession.
[What should I do with this sword?]
[Maybe I could give it to Tashigi one day… but no, she probably wouldn't be able to handle it. Besides, she already has her own blade.]
[Then again, I've just changed Zoro's future, haven't I? Eh, whatever. If losing the sword keeps him from getting stronger, then he didn't have what it takes in the first place.]
[I'll hang onto it for now. Worst case, I can always sell it later.]
