One Piece: Transmigrated as Smoker with Dark-Dark Fruit

Chapter 12: Chapter 12: Bell-mère’s New Ability

Five minutes later, every single pirate lay on the deck with broken arms and legs, neatly arranged like cargo.

Those with stronger bodies still had enough strength left to groan, while the weaker ones had long since rolled their eyes back and fainted cold.

Smoker dusted himself off, picked up the Seastone necklace from the deck, and carefully slipped it into his pocket.

"Sorry, I'm in a bit of a hurry. Didn't have time to tie you all up one by one, so this was more efficient…"

"Besides, you're all warriors of the sea, right? A little flesh wound shouldn't be a big deal."

With that, he walked over and helped untie Bell-mère's ropes.

"You really got roughed up, huh…"

"Isn't that your fault? You showed up ages ago but waited so long to jump in. I had to suffer all that for nothing… But still, thanks."

Bell-mère stood up on one leg, clearly limping.

She glanced over at Gottar lying on the deck and immediately flew into a rage. Grabbing a blade, she marched over, aiming straight for his crotch.

Smoker hurried to block her.

"Easy now. As scummy as these guys are, they're still useful. Killing them would be a waste."

Bell-mère scowled. "Huh?! What use could trash like this possibly have? If it's merit you're after, dead or alive doesn't matter!"

As the saying goes, heavy rewards bring forth brave warriors.

To encourage anti-pirate efforts, Marine Headquarters had rolled out all kinds of incentive policies.

The most famous, of course, was the bounty system that created a wave of bounty hunters across the seas.

But there was another lesser-known policy, internal military merit exchange.

Marines couldn't collect bounties directly, but they could convert captured bounties into military merit. Rack up enough points, and you'd be in for promotions and pay raises…

As just a Private, Smoker could probably jump several ranks with this ship full of pirates.

But Smoker just sighed. "That's not what I meant…"

He rolled up his sleeve, revealing a pitch-black hand.

Bell-mère's eyes widened. "What… what is that?!"

"Ever heard of Devil Fruits? Treasures of the sea said to grant special powers to those who eat them. I've eaten one myself…"

He didn't bother explaining much more.

Resting his hand on Bell-mère's shoulder, the darkness began spreading, quickly engulfing her entire body.

At first, Bell-mère tensed, but seeing that the darkness didn't harm her, she relaxed.

Then, to her astonishment, the pain in her body gradually faded.

Meanwhile, Smoker had his eyes shut, his face tense, and sweat beading on his brow.

It took a long while before he finally let out a breath and opened his eyes.

He held out his palm, floating above it was a faint, translucent white sphere of light.

Bell-mère stared in amazement.

"What kind of ability is that? It's incredible! I feel totally refreshed!"

Smoker gave a tired smile.

After so long developing his powers, he could now heal others.

However, using this ability on someone else consumed far more stamina and was far less efficient than healing himself.

It was probably just the nature of Devil Fruits.

Even Marco's regenerative flames worked the same way, healing yourself and healing others were vastly different in effectiveness.

"I ate the Dark-Dark Fruit. I'm a Darkness Human, able to manipulate gravity. Just now, I used that gravity to pull your pain out of your body."

"Whoa! A Gravity Man! That sounds awesome!"

"It's 'Darkness'... never mind. 'Gravity Man' works, close enough…"

"You took the pain into yourself, doesn't that affect you?!"

Smoker nodded. "Pain is real. Someone has to bear it. If I take it, of course I'll suffer the effects."

Then, he gave a sly grin and glanced at the pile of unconscious pirates.

"But we've got better candidates for that, don't we…"

Bell-mère caught on immediately, her eyes lighting up.

A few minutes later, the air was filled with agonized screams as Smoker drained all of Bell-mère's pain, and his own month's worth of accumulated negative status, into the pirates.

Compared to the refreshed pair, the pirates were barely clinging to life.

Gottar, in particular, had clearly died. His eyes were wide open in horror, his face twisted. Smoker had definitely given him special attention.

Suddenly, Bell-mère's expression changed.

"Wait a sec! When you train like a madman every day, have you been cheating with this ability?!"

Smoker clicked his tongue, saying nothing.

Bell-mère pressed on, "That pain orb thing, can you throw it at enemies? If it works, wouldn't you be basically invincible?!"

Smoker shook his head. "It's not that simple. To transfer pain to someone, they either have to consent or be totally helpless. So yeah, it's powerful, but not practical as a combat move."

"Oh…" Bell-mère sounded a bit disappointed, but then her eyes lit up again in awe.

"Man… Devil Fruits… I've heard about them in reports, but I've never seen one before."

"You lucky dog. If only I had one too…"

Smoker chuckled. "Devil Fruits are rare and random. No use obsessing over it. Let's see what this ship has instead."

The Gottar Pirates had been around for years, surely they had a stockpile of loot.

Bell-mère perked up immediately.

"Right! Let's move fast. Hide the good smokes and booze before that stick-in-the-mud Cole gets here!"

They eagerly ransacked the ship, soon uncovering seven or eight treasure chests stuffed with gold and jewels, and an entire cargo hold filled with weapons.

Bell-mère gasped.

No wonder Gottar didn't care about losing half his crew, this kind of stash could buy him a new one in no time.

She wasn't too interested in treasure though, hurrying on to find something more personal.

After all, the riches were going to be confiscated. The smokes and booze were what she could actually enjoy.

Eventually, she found a hidden compartment in the captain's quarters, inside which was a fancy iron box.

"Smoker! Look what I found!"

She dragged it out. It wasn't heavy, but had several locks on it.

That didn't stop them. Smoker simply grabbed the box and ripped it in half, revealing a strange-looking fruit inside.

Bell-mère picked it up. "What's this?"

Smoker stared at her, his expression complicated.

This woman was ridiculously lucky. She'd just been wishing for a Devil Fruit… and here one was?!

"That's a Devil Fruit."

Bell-mère's eyes went wide. "This is it?"

She hesitated for just a moment before offering it to him.

"You saved me. This should be yours…"

Smoker shook his head.

"This one's for you. Devil Fruits only work once, eat a second one, and you explode. So don't bother arguing."

"But let me warn you… every Fruit is unique. You never know what power you'll get until you eat it."

"Of course, if you'd rather not risk it, you can sell it. One Devil Fruit goes for about 100 million Berries…"

"100 million?!"

Bell-mère stared at the fruit like it was made of gold.

That much money would keep her in smokes and liquor for the rest of her life!

Smoker nodded. "Gottar probably didn't want to risk it either. Was planning to sell it."

Bell-mère scoffed. "A pirate more interested in money than strength… pathetic. I'll take power any day!"

And with that, she took a huge bite.

"BLEH! That's disgusting!!!"

Smoker waited patiently for her to finish eating the entire thing.

"Well? Feel any different?"

Bell-mère looked at her hands, touched her face. "Not really…"

Smoker frowned slightly.

Judging by its shape, it was probably a Paramecia-type, but he couldn't tell what it did.

Bell-mère shrugged. "No biggie. I'll figure it out later. Let's call Cole."

As she spoke, she waved her hand, suddenly, a green wind blade shot from her fingers, slicing through the ceiling and disappearing into the sky.

Bell-mère froze, eyes wide. "What… what just happened?!"

Smoker looked just as stunned. "I get it now… It's the Scythe-Scythe Fruit!"

The Scythe-Scythe Fruit, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit, compresses air into sharp, scythe-like wind blades. Its attacks can easily slice through stone.

After Smoker explained, Bell-mère was ecstatic.

She ran out to the deck, wildly swinging her hands. In no time, the pirate ship was full of gashes and holes.

Smoker panicked and rushed to stop her.

"Okay, okay! That's enough! The ship's not gonna hold! We're Devil Fruit users, we can't swim! If the ship sinks, we're both screwed!"

Bell-mère finally calmed down, but she kept grinning at her hands like a little kid with a new toy.

Smoker ignored her and walked to the mast.

The massive mast, which once required two people to hug around, had been cleanly sliced. The cut was perfectly smooth, like a mirror.

No doubt about it, the Scythe-Scythe Fruit had low activation cost and fast combat utility.

In East Blue, even a Fruit like this could make Bell-mère a powerhouse.

Soon, the Navy warship arrived.

Smoker turned to Bell-mère. "Hey… let's keep my ability a secret, alright?"

"Huh? Why?" she frowned. "If Cole knew, he'd be thrilled!"

"I'm not big on attention. You being a Devil Fruit user is enough to make him happy."

"Okay then…" Bell-mère wasn't the type to overthink things. Since Smoker asked, she simply nodded.

"I don't know why, but since you asked, I'll keep my mouth shut, promise!"

"Yeah… thanks for that."
