Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Trial By Fire
Solian woke up to the steady sway of his raft, the sun rising over the horizon. The waves were calm, and the ocean seemed peaceful, but his mind was far from at ease.
His training was progressing, but he had made little headway in controlling his abilities. His rifts were still unstable, erratic, and often hard to control. The Solar Rift Fruit was powerful, but its potential was beyond his reach.
"Focus," he muttered to himself, adjusting his stance. "I need to master this. I need to get stronger."
With a deep breath, Solian reached out with his right hand, trying to form a rift. The air seemed to warp, but as usual, it flickered and vanished before anything substantial formed.
Frustrated, he slammed his fist into the wooden planks of the raft. "Come on, Solian. You can do this."
His training so far had been based on trial and error—mostly error. He had learned that his ability to open rifts wasn't the issue; it was the control. The rifts needed to be precise, focused, and the use of solar energy within them required more concentration than he had anticipated.
A sharp screech pierced the air, followed by the sound of waves crashing. Instinctively, Solian's eyes darted toward the water. Something massive was approaching.
A giant sea serpent, easily the size of his raft, emerged from the depths. Its scales glistened, reflecting the sunlight. Its massive head was crowned with sharp, menacing teeth. The creature's eyes locked onto Solian, and it lunged forward with frightening speed.
Solian's heart raced, but his mind was focused. Survival. He had to survive. His body reacted before his mind could catch up, and he threw his hand forward, attempting to form a rift between him and the creature.
The rift appeared—just a small tear in the air—but it was enough to send the serpent veering off course. It slithered back into the water with an angry hiss, its scales scraping the surface as it disappeared.
"That was too close," Solian whispered, breathing heavily. He looked down at his hand, the faintest glow still lingering around his fingers.
He wasn't ready. His control wasn't fine-tuned enough to keep up with the demands of his Devil Fruit, but that attack had worked. A flicker of hope stirred within him.
Training, training, and more training. He had to push through this. He couldn't afford to be weak—not in this world.
The rest of the day passed in a blur as Solian focused on his rift abilities. He experimented with using the rift not just to block or dodge attacks, but to manipulate objects. He created small rifts to move driftwood, to carry supplies, and, in a bit of desperation, he even tried to boil water with his solar abilities.
Each experiment brought failure. His rifts were too unstable to manipulate with precision, but each failure was a lesson learned. He began to see patterns, trying to influence the rift's formation with careful thought and intention.
By nightfall, he was exhausted. His body ached, and his mind felt heavy with the weight of his ambitions. But as he sat near the edge of the raft, looking out at the moonlit sea, something shifted inside him.
He opened his system menu, his heart pounding with anticipation. His System Points had increased to 10.
A new notification popped up in the corner of his vision:
System Menu
Devil Fruit Mastery: 4
constitution: 5
Strength:4
Agility:6
Endurance:5
System Points: 10
He clicked on the Devil Fruit Mastery option, and a detailed description appeared:
Devil Fruit Mastery: The more you practice with your Devil Fruit, the more proficient you become. Points in this attribute will increase the stability, size, and efficiency of your rifts.
Solian pondered for a moment. He now had a choice to make—where to allocate his hard-earned system points.
With a quiet sigh, he added 5 points to Devil Fruit Mastery and 2 points to Strength, feeling the muscles in his arms grow slightly more defined as a result. His remaining 3 points went into Constitution, boosting his resilience.
His rift abilities were still unstable, but now he had 4% mastery. That meant greater control. More precision. It wasn't much, but it was progress.
As he leaned back, he noticed something on the horizon—a small ship. His heart skipped a beat. Was it a pirate ship? Or a merchant vessel? Either way, it meant potential answers, and maybe even a chance for Solian to test his new strength.
He quickly gathered his things and readied himself to meet whatever lay ahead.
The future was uncertain, but Solian had made his choice: he would become the strongest.
