Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Descent into the Depths
Nightfall cloaked Raventon Island, casting long shadows across the village. The streets were silent, but the tension in the air was palpable. The windows of the homes were shut tight, curtains drawn as though the villagers dared not witness what was about to unfold. Luffy, Zoro, and Nami stood near the hidden entrance to the tunnels beneath the village—a concealed hatch tucked behind an abandoned warehouse, its wooden planks weathered and cracked from years of neglect. The faint rustling of the windmill blades overhead was the only sound accompanying their hushed breathing.
"Once we're in, we stick together," Luffy whispered, his voice firm but quiet. His eyes were sharp beneath the brim of his straw hat. "No getting separated. We don't know what's down there."
Zoro gave a sharp nod, his hand already resting on the hilt of Wado Ichimonji. His gaze flicked around the alley, alert for any signs of movement. "Anyone down there picks a fight with us, they'll regret it." His voice was low but filled with anticipation. He was ready for blood.
Nami adjusted her grip on her staff, her knuckles whitening slightly. Her nerves were steeled, but the tightness in her chest reminded her that they were walking straight into danger. The Black Tide had shown their ruthlessness. "Let's just get this done and get out. The sooner, the better." Her eyes darted toward the rooftops, half-expecting to see a figure watching from above.
Luffy crouched and pulled open the hatch. The old wooden cover creaked loudly, making all three tense. For a moment, they froze, listening for any reaction. Silence. Beneath the hatch, a dark passage yawned open, the depths below emitting a damp, musty smell that clung to their nostrils. It reeked of mildew, rot, and something older—something sinister. Shadows danced along the walls as the dim moonlight struggled to pierce the blackness.
One by one, they climbed down the rusty iron ladder, their steps careful and deliberate. The air grew colder with each descent, wrapping around them like a chilling embrace. The sound of dripping water echoed eerily through the narrow corridor. The walls were rough stone, etched with faint markings that suggested the tunnels had been here for generations—long before the Black Tide repurposed them for their dark dealings.
Luffy led the way, his senses heightened. He could feel the shadow power within him reacting to the oppressive darkness around them. Shade stirred faintly at his side, its formless presence merging with the shadows of the tunnel walls, ready to strike at a moment's notice. Luffy felt comforted by its presence—a reminder that he held a power few could match.
Minutes felt like hours as they pressed forward, their footsteps muffled by damp earth. Each breath felt heavier, the oppressive silence only broken by the occasional skittering of rats. Suddenly, faint voices echoed from deeper within the tunnels. Zoro signaled for them to stop, raising his hand. His eyes narrowed into slits, his warrior instinct flaring.
They crept closer, their steps ghostlike. The voices became clearer—two guards, talking casually but alert. Their torches flickered, casting distorted silhouettes on the walls. They were armed with short swords, and their stance suggested they were no strangers to violence.
Luffy exchanged a glance with Zoro and Nami. No words were needed. Years of fighting together had forged an unspoken language between them.
In a swift, coordinated motion, they struck.
Zoro surged forward like a predator unleashed. His blade flashed in the dim light, the sound of steel slicing through the air followed by a guttural cry. He disarmed the first guard with a precise strike to his wrist, sending the weapon clattering to the stone floor. The guard barely had time to gasp before Zoro struck his hilt into the man's temple, dropping him unconscious.
Luffy dashed at the second guard with inhuman speed. His fist shot forward like a cannonball, connecting with the guard's jaw. The sickening crack echoed down the tunnel as the man slammed against the wall before crumpling to the ground. Shade slithered forth, wrapping tendrils around the fallen guards, ensuring they would not rise again.
Nami exhaled, her heart pounding, but she kept her focus. She scanned the tunnel for any sign of reinforcements. None came. The darkness beyond the torchlight remained still, but the danger was far from over.
With the guards subdued, the trio pressed on, their bodies tense, every nerve on edge. Their destination was near. The heart of the Black Tide—and the truth of Raventon Island's suffering—lay just ahead. Whatever waited for them beyond the veil of shadows, Luffy and his crew would face it together.
They were ready.
