Chapter 6: The First Nakama
In the East Blue, near the Reverse Mountain, lies Loguetown—the place where the Pirate King, Roger, was executed.
At this moment, it was deep into the night, yet Loguetown was brightly lit. The streets were filled with revelers, as the town prepared for the decennial "Hunting Festival" taking place the next day. The excited crowd had no intention of sleeping; they were intent on celebrating.
Before Smoker's arrival in Loguetown, the town was a melting pot of people from all walks of life, with pirates being the most numerous. The harbor was crowded with countless pirate ships.
Fifteen-year-old Kado walked through the bustling streets, his mood lifted by the energy of the festive crowd.
"Hey, Fite, I heard that on the night of the festival, all the food and drinks in Loguetown are free. Is that true?"
Kado turned to the boy beside him. Fite had large glasses perched on his nose and was carrying an absurdly long fishing rod that was taller than both Kado and himself. The rod was about as thick as an arm, and the fishing line was as thick as a thumb, stretching down to a hook that was mysteriously absent. It was hard to imagine what kind of fish would fall for such a ridiculous setup.
The boy known as Fite pushed up his glasses and said impatiently, "This is the hundred seventy-seventh time you've asked the same question. Even though you're the captain, if you keep asking silly things like this, I won't mind teaching you a lesson."
"Is that so? Well, that sounds great! I've decided that our Night Owl Pirates are going to feast tomorrow—stuff ourselves until we can't move!"
Kado's eyes sparkled with excitement as he unconsciously wiped the corner of his mouth, as if he could already taste the delicious food.
The boy next to Kado was named Fite. At seventeen, he had once dreamed of becoming a pirate and exploring the world. Unfortunately, shortly after setting sail, he encountered the notorious pirate known as "Wolf," who had a bounty of forty-six million. Unsurprisingly, Fite was easily defeated by Wolf. If not for his extensive knowledge of navigation, he might have been killed.
After being captured, Fite's fate changed when Kado, a budding bounty hunter with some renown, set his sights on Wolf. At that time, Kado wasn't strong enough to face Wolf directly; instead, he was after the pirate's treasure. Wolf had a peculiar obsession: he loved to sleep on piles of coins. He would raid and plunder to satisfy his greed, and while everyone knew he was rich, he never ventured into dangerous territories, preferring to roam the weaker East Blue.
This made him a formidable figure—strong enough to intimidate the weak, yet too far from the powerful who wouldn't bother with him. Over the years, Wolf amassed a vast fortune, the exact amount of which remained a mystery, though it was undoubtedly immense.
With a penchant for spending lavishly, Kado had just exhausted his funds. Feeling empowered by his recent strength, he set his sights on Wolf.
Kado stealthily boarded Wolf's ship, using his thieving skills to unlock the door to the pirate's quarters. As he gazed upon the room filled with bountiful treasures—Berries and gold—he was so elated he nearly jumped for joy. Unfortunately, a slight noise caught the attention of Fite, who happened to be lurking nearby. Without exchanging any words, the two found themselves in a heated skirmish, each driven by their own motives.
They fought in close quarters, careful to keep their noise to a minimum, both acutely aware of the danger of alerting Wolf and his crew. The battle was intense but frustrating; neither wanted to draw too much attention, and so they employed their most effective techniques while remaining as silent as possible.
After a few rounds of intense fighting, both of them paused to catch their breath.
"I'll give you forty percent; just let me go," Kado proposed, gesturing to the pile of Berries.
"You take me with you, and all the money is yours," Fite countered.
"Really?" Kado was taken aback, quickly nodding in agreement. The two, each with their own agenda, hurriedly filled Kado's small boat with bag after bag of treasure, soon leaving Wolf's quarters completely empty.
In their haste, they even discarded several bags of valuable gold due to the weight slowing them down, fearing they would be caught by Wolf. Kado felt a pang of regret at the lost riches.
Despite their efforts, Wolf nearly caught up with them, furiously pursuing them for three days and nights. Kado and Fite were on the brink of starvation, scrambling to conserve their dwindling food supplies.
Eventually, they managed to shake Wolf off and found temporary refuge in a small town. One day, as Kado read a newspaper and burst into laughter, Fite couldn't help but snatch it away to see what was so funny.
Kado pointed at the prominent article in the newspaper, grinning with delight as he said to Fite, "Did you see that? That's me they're talking about! 'Saint Hand Kado'—I like that name! This world is great; even a thief can be called a saint. I wonder if doing something really outrageous would earn me the title of 'Saint...'" He trailed off, lost in ridiculous fantasies.
Fite, however, remained skeptical of Kado's boast. He continued to read the newspaper, and the large headline shocked him.
"Bounty Hunter 'Saint Hand' Kado strikes again, sweeping the treasure of the bounty of forty million from the pirate 'Wolf'…"
"You're Saint Hand Kado!" Fite exclaimed, eyes wide with disbelief.
Fite, unable to believe what he just read, turned to Kado and asked, "Is it really true?"
"Of course!" Kado replied, beaming with pride. "What, do I not look like a handsome legend?"
After a thorough inspection, Fite shook his head. "Not even a little bit."
Frustrated, Kado used their last fight as an excuse and challenged Fite to a duel. In the end, thanks to his incredible recovery abilities, Kado managed to scrape a victory, albeit narrowly.
This fight convinced Fite that this fourteen-year-old was indeed the legendary Saint Hand Kado, who had already gained some fame two years ago.
In the end, Fite seized the moment and, citing his lack of sailing experience, expressed his desire to join Kado on his adventures, hoping to learn navigation skills from him.
Kado replied at the time, "Oh, so it's like being a trainee pirate on Roger's ship with Shanks and Buggy? Alright, I agree, but I've heard that pirate trainees don't get paid."
Thus, the two became temporary partners. A few months later, when Kado officially formed the "Night Owl Pirates," he solemnly invited Fite to join. Fite agreed and became the vice-captain, as well as the navigator and sharpshooter. Of course, juggling so many roles was unavoidable since their crew only consisted of the two of them. Even Captain Kado had to take on the roles of combatant and cook!
With the dual identities of the bounty hunter "Saint Hand Kado" and captain of the Night Owl Pirates, Kado led his crew member, Fite, from the West Sea to Loguetown. The reasons for their journey were not just the free food at the town's carnival or the desire to visit the execution site of Pirate King Roger. They were drawn by the upcoming decade-long Hunting Festival organized by the Loguetown Chef Alliance.
In each Hunting Festival, contestants are judged based on the rarity of the ingredients they hunt. The champion hunter receives the legendary prize: a Devil Fruit. For Kado, the prospect of obtaining a Devil Fruit was a huge temptation, as the powers it granted could elevate his strength in the unpredictable world of pirates.
