Chapter 200: Chapter 201: Is This What You Call Auspicious?
After watching Jack and Marco's aerial battle, Rim casually walked into the cabin. Moments later, the Mammoth sailed off into the distance.
Jack, noticing the lingering black smoke billowing from his ship, shouted at Marco:
"If my ship really gets burned down, I won't let you off!"
"Bastard!"
Marco, watching the thick smoke drifting further away, couldn't help but yell back at Jack:
"I don't understand what goes on in that dumb head of yours!"
"You were the one who set your own ship on fire! What's that got to do with me?!"
"If you hadn't come at me, I wouldn't have turned into a bird! No bird, no fire!"
"Dumbass! Take this!"
In terms of sheer size, Jack's massive frame made his transformation into a Suzaku even more imposing—his wingspan stretched over ten meters. Despite having maxed out his agility, his enormous body was far less maneuverable compared to Marco's relatively smaller three-meter-long Phoenix form.
It was also Jack's first time engaging in aerial combat, and his lack of experience showed. At the start of the fight, he was clearly at a disadvantage.
Marco's flames seemed to possess properties similar to his own, allowing him to be immune to fire. No matter how intense Jack's flames were, they merely clashed with Marco's blue flames, canceling each other out. What's more, Marco's flames weren't even offensive in nature. The battle quickly turned into a brawl, with both combatants using their claws and wings like two wild birds locked in a fierce struggle.
This outcome caught Jack off guard. He had assumed that with his newfound fire abilities, he would be more like a spellcaster—fighting with finesse. Who would've thought he'd still have to rely on brute force?
Still, Jack adapted quickly. Even while getting pummeled, he started fighting back.
BAM!
Marco was sent flying. His legs trembled slightly as he steadied himself—Jack's strength was beyond his expectations. After exchanging only a few blows, Marco could already feel a dull ache spreading through his legs.
This wasn't just a matter of strength—Jack's Armament Haki was superior to his as well.
And to top it off, this bastard had Conqueror's Haki too…
Marco knew that his only real advantage was his superior agility. He needed to create an opportunity to send Jack plunging into the ocean.
Meanwhile, Jack, though initially consumed by a desire to kill Marco, quickly regained his composure. Beating Marco to a pulp was fine—but killing him? That would be troublesome.
For the Beasts Pirates, who were still gathering strength, engaging the Whitebeard Pirates in an all-out war would bring no benefits.
If Whitebeard really went all out, he could probably level an entire island.
Killing Marco wasn't worth the risk. But using him to gain some aerial combat experience? Now that was an opportunity too good to pass up.
For example…
Jack, in his Suzaku form, soared higher and higher into the sky before suddenly diving at Marco with tremendous speed.
"Take my talons! Unbreakable might!"
BAM!
Jack's Conqueror's Haki struck first, momentarily stunning Marco and preventing him from dodging. He was forced to tank the attack head-on. Jack's massive form, combined with the sheer force of his dive, sent Marco hurtling dozens of meters away. To reduce the impact, Marco had no choice but to keep flying backward, nearly crashing into the sea before flapping his wings frantically to regain altitude.
"Tch…"
"What's wrong? Can't handle my talons?"
"Your so-called crane claws are nothing compared to my bird feet!"
Even with his Suzaku face, Jack exuded an unmistakable sense of arrogance.
"Tch!"
Spitting out a mouthful of blood, Marco growled:
"Don't get cocky, bastard!"
"You still have a long way to go before you can dominate the skies!"
Gathering his strength, Marco resumed his fierce battle with Jack. But the longer they fought, the clearer it became to Marco—he wasn't going to win.
His combat style relied on using high-impact shockwaves to deal damage. But Jack? Jack didn't even bother dodging. He simply powered through every attack, charging headfirst like an unstoppable beast.
And he had the endurance to back it up. Even when Marco kicked him away, he just shook his wings a little before flying back as if nothing had happened.
What's worse, the one thing Marco prided himself on—his healing factor—was being overshadowed. Unlike regular flames, Marco's blue flames didn't burn or destroy, instead, they accelerated his regeneration, allowing him to "revive" endlessly.
However, this ability drained his stamina. If he overused it, even an undying bird could die for real.
Jack, on the other hand, seemed like a monster that never tired. The Mythical Zoan fruit he had eaten had clearly enhanced his stamina to an absurd degree.
Marco was beginning to feel an urge to retreat. But Jack's sheer size made him hard to shake off. In close-quarters combat, Marco had the upper hand due to his agility, but in a contest of pure flight speed, Jack's massive wings gave him an advantage.
Healing himself once again, Marco's mind raced as he tried to find a way out. After knocking Jack back for a moment, he suddenly accelerated, attempting to flee.
But Jack didn't give chase. Instead, he flew toward the ocean.
"That's…"
"Teach?!"
"Damn it! Stop!"
Teach, who had been munching on a drumstick, blankly stared at the approaching Suzaku. Recognizing Jack's transformed state, he mumbled to himself:
"That's… Suzaku…"
Then, as he saw the massive bird open its beak, cold sweat dripped down his face.
BOOM!
"Captain Marco!"
At the last second, Marco flapped his wings and shielded the pirate ship. Though Jack's flames couldn't harm him, the sheer force of the impact knocked Marco straight into the sea.
"Hmph."
Jack spat a glob of flame-infused saliva onto the sinking ship below, then flapped his wings and turned away.
Ding! Congratulations to the host for successfully claiming a ship. Would you like to draw a reward?
"Draw!"
Ding! Congratulations, host! You have received a Flash Reward: One additional Devil Fruit consumption slot!
"…???"
For a moment, Jack plummeted like a shot-down fighter jet before barely managing to regain control just before hitting the water.
"Devil Fruit (None)?"
Glancing at his status screen, Jack realized it wasn't a hallucination. This was real.
But… why? Why didn't he get the Phoenix Fruit as a reward for defeating Marco?
Was it because he didn't actually kill him?
If Marco had died, the system would've probably just given him some worthless junk.
Could this be the true power of an auspicious sign?
