Chapter 18: Chapter 18: The Fire Festival Begins
As the Fire Festival approached, many pirates returned to Onigashima. King took charge, organizing supplies and managing preparations for the grand event.
Meanwhile, Jack, left unsupervised, began aggressively drilling Yamato and Black Maria in combat training.
BANG!
"Ah! Get lost, you pervert, Jack! Go die!"
Jack kicked open the door to their room but deftly sidestepped the incoming pillow. He shouted, undeterred:
"Get up already! Breakfast's waiting, and then it's training time!"
"I'm going to teach you both Armament Haki!" he declared with misplaced enthusiasm. "This is an assignment from King!"
Black Maria, clutching her blanket against her chest, glared at him furiously.
"Can you get out of here?! We're girls, you know! What kind of manners are these?"
Jack crossed his arms indignantly, eyes squeezed shut.
"That's why I closed my eyes!" he replied, as if that justified his actions. Then, with a look of disdain, he added, "Besides, it's not like there's much to see anyway. My pecs are bigger than yours!"
"GET OUT! GO DIE! DIE, YOU IDIOT!"
Swoosh! Bang! Clang!
Jack barely managed to escape the room, dodging the barrage of thrown objects. From outside, he called back, "Hurry up and get ready! There's fresh goat milk in the kitchen today."
"GO AWAY!"
Yamato, rubbing her eyes groggily, turned to Black Maria.
"What's wrong, sis? Why're you holding your blanket so tight?"
Black Maria shot her a glance, sighed, and shook her head.
"Yamato, we're girls. I've told you a hundred times: wear pajamas when you sleep! Stop leaving yourself exposed like that!"
"Oops... Sorry, sis. I forgot again," Yamato mumbled sheepishly.
After breakfast, Black Maria sat staring ahead blankly, clearly unamused. Yamato, wielding her trusty kanabo, was chasing Jack around like a whirlwind, both of them laughing uproariously.
"Bring the ship closer!" Jack ordered as he leapt aboard, only to dive back toward Yamato with renewed vigor.
"Maria! Help me out! I can't take her alone!" Jack called out desperately.
Black Maria forced a weak smile, her legs dragging as she reluctantly joined the fray.
Fortunately, their chaotic routine didn't last long, as the day of the Fire Festival finally arrived.
On the morning of the festival, most of the Beasts Pirates had returned to Onigashima. Black Maria was busy applying makeup in front of a mirror, while Yamato watched her, utterly confused.
When Maria finished, she beckoned Yamato over with a smile.
BANG!
The door slammed open, revealing Jack's towering frame.
"Hey! Stop dawdling! King wants us to go welcome Kaido-sama and the Shogun!"
"Jack, you idiot! Don't you know how to knock?!" Black Maria snapped, livid.
Jack shrugged dismissively. "What's the big deal? It's not like I'm going to eat you or something. And anyway, why act so shy? When we grow up, I'll just ask Kaido-sama to let me marry you two!"
"You... what?!" Black Maria grabbed a jar from the table and hurled it at him. "Get lost, you big dumb elephant! Like hell I'd marry a brute like you!"
"What's a 'wife,' Jack?" Yamato asked curiously, her innocence a stark contrast to Maria's indignation.
Jack scratched his head, glancing between the two girls.
"Huh? Oh, uh... a wife is someone who stays with you when you grow up. You know, doing... stuff."
"Doing stuff? That sounds fun! I'll be your wife!" Yamato chirped enthusiastically.
"YOU IDIOT!" Maria launched another pillow at Jack's head. "As if Kaido-sama would ever let you marry Yamato! And you think he'd let you marry both of us? Keep dreaming!"
Jack dodged Maria's latest projectile, muttering under his breath as he exited. Maria's words planted a seed of doubt in his mind.
She's got a point... Yamato's Kaido-sama's daughter, and Maria's a top candidate for a key officer position. Would Kaido-sama really allow them to marry me?
Jack rubbed his chin, formulating a plan.
Maybe I'll bring it up with Kaido-sama during the festival. Better to secure one of them first... probably Maria. She's harder to fool, so it'd be smart to lock her down first. Then I can deal with Yamato later.
His confidence grew as he envisioned the future.
Once everything's set, not even Kaido-sama can undo it. What's he gonna do, kill his own son-in-law? Ha!
The Fire Festival was a major event in Wano, but since Kaido had taken over Onigashima and allied with Kurozumi Orochi, the venue had shifted to the island. On this day, Orochi and his entourage would pay their respects, but the real purpose was the grand feast—an opportunity to strengthen ties between Orochi's court and the Beasts Pirates.
Jack, as one of Kaido's top officers, was stationed at the harbor alongside King. This year, Yamato and Black Maria joined the lineup of prominent figures.
"Kaido-sama has returned!" came the shout from a subordinate as a fleet of warships approached the port.
Kaido, towering over everyone, stepped off the lead ship alongside Orochi, who, with his gaudy hairstyle, purple hair, and awkwardly long fangs, looked more like a clown than a ruler.
Orochi's three-meter frame seemed childlike next to Kaido's seven-meter stature.
"Kaido-sama! Shogun-dono!" King greeted them with a bow, leading the group in welcome.
Orochi's eyes quickly landed on Black Maria, who had dressed to impress, exuding a beauty that was impossible to ignore. His jaw dropped, and he began to drool.
Jack, noticing Orochi's reaction, grabbed a handful of snow and smeared it across Maria's face.
"Nine-year-old brats have no business wearing makeup! You trying to attract attention?!"
Orochi coughed awkwardly, his interest visibly dampened. He turned to Kaido. "She's only nine?"
"Yes, still just a kid," Kaido replied.
"Enough, you two!" Kaido barked as Maria lunged at Jack in rage. "If you're going to fight, do it elsewhere!"
Still fuming, Maria transformed into her hybrid form and dragged Jack behind a large boulder.
THUD!
"AHHH!"
