Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Holiday
Ever since Ethan Chen assigned his second mastery point into physical strength, lifting 2B's 300-pound frame had become manageable though still with some effort.
But after allocating his third and fourth points over the past two days, the gains were now unmistakable. When he lifted 2B this morning, she felt no heavier than a backpack. Those hundreds of pounds might as well have been dozens.
He carried her effortlessly.
At first, 2B had been concerned when Ethan suddenly swept her into his arms and began spinning her around on the beach like a bento seller at a street fair. She feared he might strain himself.
But when she saw how relaxed he looked his face calm and composed, without even a flicker of strain she began to relax. She tightened her arms around his neck, wrapped her thighs around his waist like a sleepy koala, and surrendered to the carefree rhythm of their unusual morning exercise.
Ethan was enjoying it, too. With his newfound strength, so many things had become possible like unlocking new moves in a first-person shooter after reaching a certain milestone. No more relying on 2B's cooperation just to try anything fancy. Now, he could take the initiative.
He gave her firm curves a playful smack, then cupped them with both hands. As she clung to him, they moved together, step by step, all the way to her tent.
Once inside, he laid her down gently on the blanket.
"Your turn on top," he said casually. "Move at your own pace."
2B gazed at him with hazy eyes, fully aware that his stronger body no longer required him to hold back.
She pressed her palms to his chest and began to move smoothly, deliberately, using the motions she'd once seen Tashigi demonstrate. She set her own tempo, her own rhythm.
It was demanding. Relentless. As if she wanted to wring every last drop of energy from herself.
…
When Mona woke up, Ethan was already gone.
But the lingering warmth on the blankets, and the distinct ache low in her body, made it clear that everything from last night had been real.
She flushed at the memory. That shameless captain. Did he even know how to consider a girl's feelings?
Still... she had to admit the experience had left her shaken in a good way.
Even recalling it now made her thighs tremble.
She lazed under the covers a while longer before slowly rising to dress. But as she moved, she noticed a certain soreness. Her usually fair skin had turned a reddish-pink in some places no mystery as to why.
Muttering to herself, she gathered a small orb of water from the air, carefully pressing it to the affected area.
While not specialized in healing, Mona knew enough magic theory to perform minor recovery spells. All elemental powers could have restorative effects when used skillfully. And although she wasn't a master, a little swelling and discomfort were still within her ability to treat.
Once her skin returned to its usual soft, pale glow, she pulled on a comfortable pair of shorts and a snug, waist-hugging white shirt before stepping out of the tent.
Outside, Ethan was preparing breakfast. A pot of milk simmered over the fire, blended with something else, and fresh fish sizzled on the grill.
2B was seated nearby, sipping a tall glass of chilled barley and fruit juice, the picture of relaxation.
Mona glanced at her, a little embarrassed, but said nothing about the night before. She simply sat beside Ethan and gestured toward the pot.
"What are you cooking? Some kind of milk stew?"
"Nope. Papaya stewed in milk."
Milk, rich in protein, was a staple on their ship. Ethan had stocked up on bottled milk, and with a refrigerator onboard, it kept well for months.
As for the papaya he'd prepared that especially for Mona. While topical application combined with massage was said to be most effective for certain… developments, dietary support wouldn't hurt either.
This morning's breakfast was all about nourishment.
"That's a strange combo," Mona said, raising a brow. "Never heard of it before."
"First time for everything. Try a few bowls. It actually tastes pretty good."
Mona didn't suspect a thing. She got up to wash up on the ship and take a quick shower before returning to eat.
Back at the fire, Ethan made sure she drank two full bowls of the papaya milk stew.
After breakfast, Mona helped clean up and asked, "Are we setting sail now?"
"No rush. Let's rest here a few more days. Sun, sand, fresh air no harm in taking a break... The beach on the other side of the island looks nice. We can check it out later."
Though they were officially at sea as bounty hunters, it wasn't necessary to chase pirates every single day.
With the system offering no immediate quests, and Mona still studying navigation, a bit of downtime seemed well deserved.
The past month had been a whirlwind navigation lessons, swimming drills, and the chaos of their recent journey, not to mention everything that went down in Shells Town. Frankly, they were all exhausted.
Living in this world wasn't as safe or easy as back home.
But everything had its trade-offs.
"You're the captain. It's your call," Mona said with a smirk.
"Of course it is," Ethan replied, giving her a light pat on the head. "And you better keep working hard. If there's something you don't get, just ask. I might not be great with theory, but I've got plenty of hands-on experience."
After all, he'd been taught by seasoned fishermen. He hadn't learned a ton, but what he had picked up was the real deal more than enough for standard navigation.
"Just watch me," Mona declared, crossing her arms confidently. "I'm not going to let you down."
For someone who'd mastered the complexities of astrology, the clearly labeled charts and rules of seamanship were hardly a challenge. She was sure she'd be able to prove her worth to Ethan in just a few more days.
2B, too, had no objections to the extended stay. And just like that, the plan was set.
…
No longer swaying with the waves aboard the ship, Ethan now lay stretched out on a beach chair, wearing swim trunks and basking in the sea breeze. Nothing to do, nowhere to be-utter bliss.
"Caw! Caw!"
Ethan opened one eye to find a large seagull perched on the arm of his chair. It wore a postal cap.
He recognized the bird instantly. A News Coo. These special seagulls were responsible for delivering newspapers to sailors across the sea.
Of course, nothing came free. A paper cost fifty Berries the same as a cotton candy for Chopper. Not too bad.
Ethan rummaged through his clothes for some change, handed over the coins, and received today's edition.
This was the East Blue, so naturally, the news was all local random reports from scattered kingdoms, and the latest bounty updates for local pirates.
Skimming the bounty section, Ethan called over his support drone and had it record the details of the wanted posters. Better to stay informed in case they ran into someone dangerous.
One article, however, caught his eye.
A nearby town called Antia would be holding a grand culinary competition in a few days. The top prize? A whopping twenty million Berries.
