Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Water on the Deck
"Did you get Mona settled?"
"Yeah," Ethan replied, leaning against the railing. "I left her to rest and take it all in. It's a lot for a girl her age to suddenly find herself in another world."
"I didn't have that problem," 2B said.
"You're different," Ethan said, stepping behind her and gently wrapping his arms around her waist. "You found your purpose. That makes all the difference."
"Mm," 2B murmured, leaning back into his embrace. "Protecting humanity is my mission... But don't you think it's strange? Mona didn't have any such purpose, yet she still ended up by your side."
"Maybe people from other worlds are drawn together," Ethan offered. "Some kind of cross-world resonance."
"That could be it," 2B agreed softly. She wasn't one to dwell on hypotheticals.
As they stood together, watching the sun dip toward the horizon, Ethan's hands tightened slightly, his body language shifting. 2B noticed, of course. She always did.
"Should we go back to the cabin?" she asked, her voice low. "Or... here?"
"Here," Ethan replied, his gaze still fixed on the glowing sea.
The setting sun bathed the deck in warm light. The sea breeze carried the salt of the ocean, mingled with a stillness that only existed between two people who knew each other intimately. Their proximity, the gentle creak of the ship, the hush of waves it all painted a private world around them.
2B turned to him with understanding in her eyes, wordless but sure. She moved with a grace honed by design but softened by feeling. There was nothing hurried between them just a quiet, mutual desire to connect.
Their moment was intimate, tender, shared in whispers and steady breaths under the twilight sky.
Afterwards, 2B remained close, resting against him as the waves rocked the ship gently beneath them. Ethan brushed her silvery hair back behind her ear.
"You've got some strong legs," he joked, voice low and affectionate.
"It's in our build specs," 2B said with a small smile. "My commanding officer's are even more... impressive."
"Really?" Ethan raised a brow. "Now I'm curious."
"If she ever ends up here, I'll let you see for yourself."
"Sounds like a deal."
They sat there quietly for a time, the silence companionable, filled with the lapping sea and the scent of salt air.
Meanwhile, inside the ship, Mona sat curled on her bunk, digesting all that the drone the intelligent, hovering assistant Ethan called the 'support unit' had told her.
This world was dangerous, wild, and ruled by tides of violence and fortune. For someone like her unfamiliar with its rules, and suddenly stranded with no resources survival alone would be a daily challenge.
But here, aboard this strange but sturdy ship, she had food, shelter, and perhaps, a place. It was already more stability than she'd had arriving in Mondstadt.
With a small sigh, Mona turned toward the support unit still floating quietly nearby.
"Hey... what kind of person is your captain?" she asked.
"A good man," the unit replied.
"That's a little convenient," Mona said wryly. "No AI's going to say their owner's a bad guy. But still what kind of good?"
"One who cares for 2B. That's enough for me."
Mona nodded slightly, then tilted her head. "And this whole sailing business? Is he planning to be a pirate or something?"
"He's a bounty hunter," the drone explained. "He hunts pirates and claims their bounties similar to an adventurer."
"That... sounds a lot better," Mona admitted. "Though one million berries is a big bounty. What's the cost of living here like?"
"A good cabbage costs one hundred fifty berries. A large grilled eel set is one thousand."
The unit even projected the dish in question glistening eel fillets, neatly plated with rice and pickles.
Mona's stomach growled.
"That big for just a thousand? That's cheap," she said, half amazed, half embarrassed. "Back home in Mondstadt, even a basic fish sandwich could set you back more than that..."
"Are you hungry? There's dried eel and bread in the galley. I'll bring you some."
"Wouldn't that be a hassle?" Mona asked, blushing a little.
"It's no trouble. The captain asked me to take care of you."
And with that, the drone floated off.
As it passed through the deck, it briefly caught sight of Ethan and 2B still leaning against each other in the fading light. It said nothing, simply continued to the galley.
The drone steamed a portion of eel, toasted bread with fruit jam, and brewed a cup of tea.
When it returned, Mona's eyes lit up.
"This looks amazing! Did you make this?"
"Just reheated and arranged."
Still, Mona bit into the food with a kind of reverence, savoring every bite. The flavor brought a warmth that made this unfamiliar world feel just a little more like home.
After finishing her meal and resting a bit, she stood, her eyes determined.
She found Ethan sitting at the stern, fishing rod in hand.
"You done chatting with the drone?" he asked without turning.
"Yeah," she said, sliding onto the railing beside him. "I've thought it through. Wandering around this world alone would be foolish. So... if the offer still stands, I'd like to join your crew. A job, food, a place to stay that's more than I've got now."
"A wise choice," Ethan smiled. "But it's not charity. You'll earn your keep, and I'll pay you fairly."
"That's fair," Mona nodded. "As long as it's something I can do."
"Right now, I need a navigator," Ethan said, his tone turning serious. "Can you read the stars? Chart courses by current and wind? Navigate like a true sailor?"
At that, Mona's expression changed. Her fist clenched slightly, and her eyes lit up.
