One Piece: Gawain The Knight Of The Sun

Chapter 30: Chapter 30: The Strong and the Weak

"What nonsense?" Krieg spat blood, gripping his great spear, eyeing Gawain warily. "Of course you hit me!"

"That doesn't count as a hit," Gawain said calmly, as if stating a fact. "I meant to take your arm."

"No matter."

"I was still getting used to this blade's power. Next swing, I'll know how much force to use."

"Big talk!" Krieg snarled, charging with his spear. The pain in his arm sharpened his focus.

He couldn't let Gawain unleash another attack. This time, armor saved his arm—next, it could be his exposed head!

With his bulk, one hit—no, just the spearhead's explosion—could end Gawain!

Thoughts raced as killing intent hardened Krieg's face.

Despite heavy armor and a spear over a ton, Krieg's speed surpassed ordinary men.

In less than a second, he closed the gap, swinging his spear like a hammer.

"Die!"

To normal eyes, Krieg's speed was lightning-fast, but to Gawain, it was tortoise-slow.

Slow!

Too slow!

Yawn-inducingly slow!

Gawain sidestepped the spear's tip. Wado Ichimonji, over 1.2 meters long, slashed downward in a kesa-giri.

The blade sliced through the spearhead and Krieg's chestplate, cutting into flesh.

Gawain felt no resistance—Wado Ichimonji's sharpness was beyond imagination.

Splatter!

Blood sprayed from Krieg's chest and abdomen. His charging momentum reversed, and he collapsed, pain briefly blanking his mind.

Not only was his thickest chestplate cleaved, but his secret weapon—the great spear—snapped at the tip.

Thud!

As Krieg hit the ground, black gunpowder spilled from the spearhead like sand.

Enough powder to destroy a warship scattered in the port's breeze.

Only when it stung his face did Krieg grasp what happened. "Impossible!"

The man before him, standing impassively, exceeded his understanding.

In nearly forty years, only one word fit this man: "Monster!"

"Who are you?!"

"Just an ordinary pirate aiming for the Grand Line," Gawain said, his tone laced with pity.

Krieg, nearly gutted, gasped on the ground, forcing out one last question. "A monster like you… even in the Grand Line, there aren't many, right?"

"Monster?" Gawain chuckled. "In that world, I'm no monster."

"Compared to those who destroy islands or nations, I'm dust in the air."

"You're lying!" Krieg coughed blood, his face paling. "If… if someone like you can't dominate the Grand Line, what's the point of my weapons built for survival?"

"Survival?" Gawain's pity deepened, his words cutting sharper than any blade. "Why would the strong forge weapons for survival?"

Krieg's pupils shrank, mouth opening, but no words came.

Gawain continued, "Only the weak craft tools to adapt to the world. The strong reshape it to fit their will."

"Like it or not, from the start, you were nothing but… a weakling!"

Gawain's words were a final verdict, shattering Krieg's convictions. His expression mirrored the one he wore at Baratie in the original story.

But this time, it wasn't Mihawk delivering defeat—it was Gawain. And Gawain didn't toy with prey; he uprooted threats.

Swish!

Gawain flicked the blood from Wado Ichimonji, stepping toward Krieg.

Seconds felt like centuries to Krieg, death never closer.

The cowardice of the weak surged, tears streaming, snot dripping. "Spare me, please! I have money, I'll serve you, I have fleets…"

"I…"

Gawain shook his head. "You still don't get it. The moment you attacked Raven Port, your fate was sealed."

He raised Wado Ichimonji, his gaze holding only pity and boredom.

Such an opponent no longer sparked his interest.

If he knew Kuro's thoughts, he'd understand why Kuro once chose to quit.

Boredom.

It could drive a man mad.

When everything lost flavor, drifting the seas paled against waiting for death in a quiet town.

But Gawain knew the Grand Line and New World held countless peaks to climb.

Unknowingly, his purpose in this world had shifted.

Something suppressed in his past life's civilized society stirred, awakened by power and bloodshed.

"This sea has no place for the weak!"

His voice fell.

Wado Ichimonji's silver arc descended, stopping just as it touched Krieg's neck…

"Wait!" a voice cried. "My life for his!"

Gin, somehow awake in a pool of blood, knelt, head pressed to the ground.

Kuro's claw wounds and the poison gas left him a step from death, sustained only by sheer will. "Spare the captain, and I'll give everything!"

"Please!"

Gawain paused, as did Krieg, who briefly faltered before reverting to cold ruthlessness.

Seizing Gawain's distraction, Krieg leaped up, grabbed Gin's arm, and hurled him at Gawain.

"Don't blame me, Gin! I want to live!"

"Don't board my ship in the next life!"
