Chapter 59: honey trap - 57
Perhaps because it was still early in the morning and he wasn't expecting anyone, Sengoku didn't bother hiding his true self. He yawned lazily and stretched with little enthusiasm.
"Ugh~ being Fleet Admiral is seriously tough... Had I known, I would've learned from Garp, refused the promotion, and stayed an admiral in peace!"
He muttered regretfully while scratching his neck. Suddenly, he felt a bland taste in his mouth and leaned down under the desk, searching for the okaki snack bag he had stashed.
"Weird... didn't I tape it here? Why can't I find it?"
He kept rummaging under the desk until he finally found the bag he had taped there to protect it from theft... but before he could rejoice, the office door burst open!
The communications soldier rushed in, his face tense.
"Urgent report from the East Blue, Fleet Admiral— Huh?"
He looked around but saw no one… until a loud thud and a cry of pain rang out:
"Aiyoooh!!"
To his shock, Sengoku emerged from under the desk, his face flushed blue with anger and a huge bump on his head pushing up his military cap.
In that brief moment, the soldier's mind wandered back to his janitor days, as if the mop and broom were waving him goodbye…
"Ahem, ahem!"
Sengoku coughed loudly, snapping the soldier back from the nightmare of full dismissal from the navy.
He pressed a hand to the bump on his head and tried to act serious as he scolded:
"Don't you know to knock before entering? Didn't your instructor teach you basic discipline?"
"I-I'm sorry, Fleet Admiral! A critical report just arrived from the East Blue!"
The soldier stammered, hoping to redirect Sengoku's focus to the document in his hand.
Sengoku glared, then said:
"Hand over the report—and submit an apology letter, no less than a thousand words, by the end of your shift."
"Y-yes, sir!!"
Relieved, the soldier quickly handed over the report.
Sengoku began reading carefully… and the moment his eyes scanned the first few lines, his expression changed drastically.
"Hawkeye lost in the East Blue? To that rookie who defeated Crocodile?! That's impossible!"
He kept denying it in his mind—it simply couldn't be.
"That man... Hawkeye Mihawk! Before Shanks lost his arm, he was the only one who could match him in a duel—sometimes even bested him."
"The strongest swordsman in the world. The mightiest of all the Shichibukai!"
"How could someone like that lose to a rookie only known for defeating Crocodile?"
Crocodile somewhere: "What do you mean 'only'?!"
Sengoku waved the report in the soldier's face and asked suspiciously:
"Are you sure this came from the East Blue branch? Has it been verified? Is this some kind of sick joke?"
The soldier replied firmly:
"Impossible, sir! The report came jointly from Branches 77, 116, and 153. We verified it multiple times. We even contacted other branches in the East Blue to confirm."
"And since it concerns a Shichibukai, we used our resources to reach Morgans from the World News Paper—and the government's own intelligence unit."
"We received matching information from both sides. In fact, ever since the news came in, we've been trying to contact Mihawk—no response."
Hearing that three branches had confirmed it, and both Morgans and the government backed it, plus Mihawk going silent, caused Sengoku to frown even harder and reread the document with growing dread.
And the more he read, the deeper his scowl grew:
"Overpowered Mihawk."
"A single blow created a bottomless pit."
"A quake that shook the entire East Blue."
"The attacker... belonged to an unknown bloodline?"
If these words described Whitebeard, Sengoku might believe it... but attributed to a rookie?
"Is it April Fools' Day? Are all three branches, Morgans, and the government messing with me?!"
Even though Peter had defeated Crocodile and was clearly strong, Sengoku just couldn't accept this new claim.
But in the end, he forced himself to face reality.
"Inform Kizaru, Vice Admiral Tsuru, and all officers of Rear Admiral rank and above. Emergency meeting in Conference Room One, ten minutes."
The soldier nodded and rushed out at full speed.
Sengoku reached into a drawer and pulled out a special Den Den Mushi—one that connected him directly to the Five Elders, the Gorosei.
At Mary Geoise, inside the "Chamber of Authority," the Five Elders had gathered unusually early—because of the Peter incident.
Though the government had only learned about it half an hour before the navy, they appeared calm when they received Sengoku's call.
"Sengoku? Looks like you've finally heard," said Saint Warcury calmly.
"Yes, sir... If this report is accurate, then Peter... no, he's a greater threat than Roger or even Rocks!"
At the mention of Rocks, all their expressions darkened.
None of them had forgotten the man who nearly destroyed the World Government.
The one who reacted the most was Saint Jay Garcia Saturn, who had personally fought in the God Valley Incident.
He glared coldly into the Den Den Mushi and barked:
"Sengoku! Don't forget your position! How can a Fleet Admiral panic over a single report?!"
Saint Marcus stepped in to calm him.
"Calm down, Sengoku. This boy can't compare to Rocks. He's just a rookie. The threat isn't that great… yet."
Those words felt like offering toilet paper to someone who found the roll empty after the fact—it brought Sengoku little comfort.
"Do you have a plan, sirs? Should we deploy navy support?"
The Five Elders exchanged glances before Warcury answered:
"According to our intel, the boy... is obsessed with women. Ever since his rise, he's surrounded himself with six gorgeous females."
"We intend to use that weakness—Operation 'Beautiful Woman'. If he joins us, fine. If not, he'll regret it."
"A beautiful woman? That's your plan?" Sengoku blinked, having expected something grand.
He was surprised to find it was just an old trick.
Warcury chuckled mockingly:
"It's an old trick because it works. Only a fool wouldn't exploit such a weakness."
Saturn added sharply:
"By the way, don't we have a navy officer with him? The one who was with the CP0? Can we contact her?"
Sengoku replied bitterly:
"You mean Hina? Unfortunately, we lost contact after her assignment with them… She was a talented girl. I once saw her as a future vice admiral… but alas."
Saturn's voice turned more aggressive.
"Find her immediately. And Mihawk too. I want to know whether he's alive or dead."
"Yes, sir... I'll personally oversee it."
Warcury concluded:
"Leave this to Cipher Pol. You marines just keep monitoring the Whitebeard Pirates."
"Before a new force rises, the old one must fall. Make sure that fossil doesn't live long enough to see the next era."
"Understood. In the name of justice, I won't allow the new era to begin before Whitebeard falls."
"Good. That's all."
The call ended. Sengoku gently put the Den Den Mushi away, then picked up the intercom and issued orders to follow up with Mihawk and Hina.
Once he was done, he leaned back in his chair and muttered:
"Operation 'Beautiful Woman'... Will that brat really fall for it? Or have they prepared someone as stunning as Boa Hancock?"
"If not... where does this ridiculous confidence come from?"
He thought long and hard but found no answer. In the end, he pinned his hopes on that secret agent, praying the mission would succeed.
"Ugh... why am I stressing myself? CP will handle it. If they fail, I'm not the one who'll get blamed. All I have to do is attend the meeting and set that brat's new bounty."
He mumbled, then grabbed the report again—his eyes stopping at a quote from Peter's conversation with Mihawk:
"God of Destruction? Maybe a bit exaggerated... but fine. This power is worthy of a god."
Sengoku nodded slowly, jotting down the note.
After straightening his desk and putting on his "Justice" coat, he left, heading to the meeting room.
While the navy held an emergency meeting with hundreds of top officers...
On a deserted, remote island in the East Blue…
The survivors of the Big Mom Pirates were trying to catch their breath, doing their best to make use of the land's scarce resources.
Inside one of the hastily-built straw huts—run-down and humble—
Zoro was lucky enough to be sharing the largest one with Perospero.
And despite the barebones shelter, they were doing their best to recover amidst the rubble.
