Chapter 9: Chapter 9: I’m Competing with Big Mom for Food in Elbaf
"Boom! Boom! Boom!"
The ground trembled violently with each step the person took, and smoke and dust rose with every stride.
As the huge shadow loomed over them, Roy and Heiding both looked up, their heads tilted back to see.
It was the giant, Mountain Beard Aruluru, and behind him was his companion—Waterfall Beard Yoruru!
Both of these giants were former captains of the Giant Soldier Pirates, and after the crew disbanded, they returned to their village.
Aruluru stood at 20.5 meters tall, an imposing figure with a beard like a mountain dragging in front of him.
Yoruru, slightly taller at 21.5 meters, had an even more massive beard that cascaded like a waterfall, denser and longer than Aruluru's.
Roy looked at the two elderly giants. Not only were giants huge in size, but they also lived incredibly long lives.
Currently, Aruluru was the oldest in the village at the age of 345.
Yoruru was a year younger, at 344.
"Waterfall Beard-sama, Mountain Beard-sama!" Heiding exclaimed respectfully as he saw them.
"Galmero's saying 'plunder is not as good as trade' isn't bad," Yoruru commented, admiring Roy as he spoke.
"Yes," Heiding nodded respectfully.
Roy could see the respect in Heiding's eyes as he gazed up at the two giants, admiration welling up inside him.
"Roy is doing well in this regard. Keep it up, kid!" Aruluru encouraged, his voice booming.
Although Roy was young and his build wasn't as imposing, the giants respected his defense. To them, Roy's defense was comparable to Linlin's.
Roy's strength, though slightly weaker than Linlin's, was still considerable. More importantly, Roy was much more obedient and eager to learn from the giants.
That made the giants more willing to accept Roy into their ranks, allowing him to study their swordsmanship.
Whether it was Yoruru, Aruluru, or Heiding and Casey, the giants had long accepted that the giant family could include a human child.
They cared for Roy even more than the other children of the Lamb House.
It was like the difference between a neighbor's child and your own child.
"Thank you for the compliment, I'll do my best!" Roy nodded.
Heiding, eyes gleaming with ambition, looked at Aruluru and Yoruru, silently vowing to become a respected giant like them one day.
He turned to Roy, a new resolve forming in his heart. He was going to work even harder from now on, and his first goal was to surpass Roy.
Roy noticed Heiding's gaze, smiled, and patted him on the shoulder.
"Hey, be gentler, that hurts!" Heiding grimaced, muttering, "Don't you know your own strength?"
"Hahaha!" Aruluru laughed heartily, stroking his beard, then looked around at everyone. "It's time for some Samura! Get the Lamb House children and bring them over."
"Huh? What's Samura?" Linlin asked, confused, looking at Aruluru.
"It's a sweet and delicious snack," Roy explained. "Before the village's twelve-day fasting festival every winter solstice, we rely on Samura to get all the nutrients we need."
"Exactly!" Gelz, walking up beside Roy, added, "Before the fasting days, Samura not only provides the energy we need but eating it is also a bit of a tradition."
Roy sighed inwardly. The people of the Pirate World were incredibly resilient.
They were all like cockroaches that could survive anything.
From Elbaf's fasting days to Zeff and Sanji enduring hardships, and later Luffy enduring hunger for a promise, it seemed like no one ever truly starved.
But Linlin, while she could endure hunger, when it reached a breaking point, it would lead to catastrophic consequences.
Food Frenzy!
It was during one of the fasting days when Linlin lost control due to her extreme hunger, suffering from her food frenzy. She destroyed the village and severely injured Yoruru.
After the disaster Linlin caused, Yoruru passed away.
Roy respected other races' festivals, but this one would cause severe damage to Elbaf. This was something that troubled him greatly.
He needed to find a way to prevent Linlin from causing more damage.
"Linlin can't stay in Elbaf," Roy thought as he observed Linlin's insatiable hunger. He made a decision in his heart.
Even though he had helped her survive the fasting day crisis, with Linlin's uncontrollable food frenzy, it was only a matter of time before Elbaf suffered greater losses.
After all, in the original storyline, Linlin, along with the troublemaking children and the nun, left Elbaf after Linlin's sixth birthday. It was during that birthday when Linlin overate, and the children from Lamb House and the nun were tragically consumed by her.
Cough, cough, actually, that was a fact. The ambiguous wording in the anime was just to pass the review process.
After Linlin finished eating and regained her senses, she received the Soul-Soul Fruit, and that was the proof.
Anyone who had seen the original story knew that Linlin's food frenzy wasn't just caused by extreme hunger.
It also happened when she craved a specific food and couldn't find it. At this point, she lost all rationality and could do anything, including brutally harming or killing her own companions or children.
It was only a matter of time before Linlin's food frenzy would erupt again.
Roy was determined to minimize the damage from this incident and make sure that Linlin would leave Elbaf in the future.
"Are we going to eat now? Sweet snacks!" Linlin exclaimed excitedly, saliva dripping from her mouth.
Under the blue sky and white clouds, the village of Elbaf was filled with laughter.
Tables were set up around the village, and large wooden bowls full of Samura, covered in powdered sugar, were brought out.
The adults gathered around one table, drinking from their cups.
The children of Lamb House, along with the nun, Heiding, and Gelz, sat at another table, eagerly eyeing the Samura in front of them.
Roy smelled the sweet aroma in the air and grabbed one of the Samura.
Better eat it quickly, or Linlin would snatch it all.
Taking a bite, the sweetness of the sugar rushed into his mouth, breaking through the soft outer layer, revealing the smooth and delicious cream inside, followed by the sweet almond meringue flavor.
No wonder this was the "culprit" behind Linlin's food frenzy in Elbaf.
This snack was indeed great.
After finishing one Samura, Roy quickly grabbed another, hands moving rapidly as he continued to pile them up.
At this moment, the table where he sat was the most lively.
Linlin moved her hands like shadows, quickly devouring one Samura after another, her eyes locked onto the mountains of Samura.
Meanwhile, Roy seemed to be in some sort of competition, gobbling down the Samura at a frantic pace.
It was truly a contest of gluttony.
In Elbaf, the goal was for the protagonist to gain great abilities, not to focus on romance.
It was only after this chapter that the female leads would start to appear.
