Chapter 7: Chapter 7: The Forest’s Whisper
The week dragged on for Oliver Hall. Every day, he found himself glancing out the window of his classes, his mind wandering to the map hidden in his desk drawer. The red X marking a spot deep within the forest called to him, but academy rules were strict: students were only allowed to leave the grounds on Saturdays and Sundays. Oliver had to wait, and patience was not his strong suit.
Finally, Saturday arrived. Oliver woke up early, the first rays of sunlight streaming through the window of his dormitory. He dressed quickly, his heart pounding with anticipation. Today was the day. He grabbed his bag, already packed with essentials: a few potions, some snacks, and his summonology book. The map was tucked safely inside his pocket.
Downstairs in the common room, Lily and Ethan were waiting for him. Lily sat cross-legged on the couch, her black cat, Midnight, curled up in her lap. Ethan lounged in an armchair, his broomstick leaning against the wall beside him.
"Took you long enough," Ethan said, grinning. "I was starting to think you'd chickened out."
Oliver rolled his eyes. "I'm not the one who screamed when a spider crawled into my bed last week."
Ethan's grin faltered. "That was a huge spider, okay? It had fangs!"
Lily laughed, shaking her head. "Are we doing this or not? The longer we wait, the more likely it is that someone will notice we're gone."
Oliver nodded, his expression serious. "Let's go."

The trio made their way to the edge of the academy grounds, where a tall iron gate marked the boundary between the school and the forest. A sign posted on the gate read: **"STUDENTS: NO ENTRY WITHOUT PERMISSION."**
Ethan glanced around nervously. "You sure we won't get in trouble for this?"
"We're allowed to leave on weekends," Oliver said, though his voice wavered slightly. "We're not breaking any rules… technically."
Lily raised an eyebrow. "Technically?"
"Come on," Oliver said, pushing the gate open. "We'll be back before anyone notices."
The forest loomed ahead, its towering trees casting long shadows over the ground. The air was thick with the scent of pine and earth, and the occasional chirp of a bird broke the silence. As they ventured deeper, the forest grew darker, the canopy above blocking out most of the sunlight. Strange glowing mushrooms dotted the forest floor, their soft light casting an eerie glow.
"This place gives me the creeps," Ethan muttered, swatting at a low-hanging branch. "It's like something out of a horror story."
"Stop being such a baby," Lily teased, though her voice wavered slightly. Midnight, perched on her shoulder, let out a low growl, her green eyes scanning the shadows.
Oliver paused, studying the map. "According to this, we're close. The X should be just ahead."
As they pressed on, the forest seemed to come alive. The trees whispered in the wind, their branches creaking like old bones. The glowing mushrooms grew more numerous, their light casting strange patterns on the ground. Oliver's heart raced as they approached a small clearing, where a large, ancient tree stood at the center. Its trunk was twisted and gnarled, and its roots sprawled out like the tentacles of some great beast.
"This is it," Oliver said, his voice barely above a whisper. "The X is right here."
Lily frowned, her eyes narrowing as she studied the tree. "What are we supposed to do now? Dig?"
Before Oliver could respond, a low growl echoed through the clearing. The trio froze, their eyes darting around as the sound grew louder. From the shadows emerged a massive serpent-like creature, its scales glistening in the dim light. Its eyes glowed a menacing yellow, and its forked tongue flicked out as it hissed.
"Uh, Oliver?" Ethan said, his voice trembling. "I think we found the 'dangerous something' Lily was worried about."
Oliver's mind raced. He glanced at the map, then at the tree, and finally at the creature. "Valtor!" he shouted, summoning the wolf skeleton from his subspace ring. The skeletal wolf materialized in a flash of red light, its glowing eyes locking onto the serpent.
"Distract it!" Oliver ordered, and Valtor lunged at the creature, snapping at its tail. The serpent hissed in anger, turning its attention to the wolf.
"Lily, Ethan, help me find whatever's hidden here!" Oliver said, dropping to his knees and digging through the roots of the tree. Lily joined him, her hands trembling as she pulled at the dirt, while Ethan kept watch, his wand drawn.
"Hurry up!" Ethan shouted, as the serpent lashed out at Valtor, its tail slamming into the ground with a thunderous crash. "I don't think Valtor can hold it off forever!"
Oliver's fingers brushed against something cold and metallic. He pulled it free, revealing a small, intricately carved bone amulet. It glowed faintly, and Oliver felt a surge of energy as he held it.
"Got it!" he exclaimed, holding up the amulet.
"Great, now let's get out of here!" Ethan yelled, as the serpent turned its attention back to them, its eyes blazing with fury.
Oliver hesitated, his eyes darting to Valtor, who was still locked in combat with the creature. "We can't leave him!"
"Oliver, we don't have a choice!" Lily said, grabbing his arm. "We need to go!"
But before they could move, Ethan tripped over a root, his wand flying out of his hand. "Oh, brilliant," he muttered, scrambling to his feet. The serpent lunged at him, its jaws wide open.
"Ethan!" Oliver shouted, his heart pounding. He raised the amulet, and without thinking, he chanted a spell from the summonology book. A burst of red light shot from the amulet, striking the serpent and sending it reeling.
The creature hissed in pain, its body writhing as it retreated into the shadows. The clearing fell silent, save for the sound of their heavy breathing.
"Well, that was close," Ethan said, brushing dirt off his robes. "Remind me never to follow you into a forest again, Oliver."
Oliver ignored him, his eyes fixed on the amulet. It pulsed faintly in his hand, and he felt a strange connection to it, as though it were alive.
"What is that thing?" Lily asked, her voice filled with awe.
"I don't know," Oliver admitted. "But I think it's important. Maybe it's connected to the relic the map was leading us to."
As they made their way back to the academy, the forest seemed less foreboding. The glowing mushrooms lit their path, and the whispers of the trees faded into the background. Oliver couldn't shake the feeling that the amulet was just the beginning of something much larger.
---
Back at the hostel, the trio collapsed onto the couches in the common room, exhausted but exhilarated. Ethan flopped onto the floor, dramatically clutching his chest. "I'm never going into the forest again. Never. Do you hear me? Never."
Lily laughed, though her hands were still shaking. "You say that now, but I bet you'll be the first one to suggest another adventure."
Oliver sat by the fireplace, the amulet resting in his palm. It glowed faintly, and he couldn't help but wonder what secrets it held. Valtor lay at his feet, his skeletal form gleaming in the firelight.
"Do you think we'll get in trouble for this?" Lily asked, her voice quiet.
Oliver shook his head. "I don't think so. As long as we keep it to ourselves, no one needs to know."
Ethan groaned, sitting up. "Yeah, but what about the next time? Because let's face it, Oliver, there's always a next time with you."
Oliver smiled, his eyes still fixed on the amulet. "Maybe. But for now, let's just enjoy the fact that we survived."
As the fire crackled in the hearth, Oliver felt a sense of accomplishment. He had faced danger, uncovered a mystery, and come out stronger for it. And as he looked at his friends, he knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, they would face them together.
