Oliver and the Magic Academy

Chapter 10: Chapter 10: Beast Taming Trials

The morning sun streamed through the windows of the Eastford Academy dining hall, casting a warm glow over the long tables. Oliver, Lily, and Ethan sat together, their plates piled high with pancakes, eggs, and toast. The chatter of students filled the air, but the trio was unusually quiet, their minds focused on the day ahead.

"I can't believe we're doing this," Lily said, poking at her food with a fork. "Beast Taming trials? What if the creature doesn't like me?"

"Relax, Lily," Ethan said, his mouth full of toast. "You've got Midnight. If anything, the beast will be scared of you."

Lily shot him a glare, but Oliver chuckled. "He's got a point. You're great with animals. You'll do fine."

Lily sighed, her green eyes filled with doubt. "I hope so. But what about you two? Oliver, you've got Valtor, but Ethan… well, let's just say your track record with creatures isn't great."

Ethan grinned, his usual confidence shining through. "I'll be fine. I've got charm and wit on my side. What more could a beast want?"

Oliver rolled his eyes, but he couldn't help but smile. Despite their nerves, he was looking forward to the trials. Beast Taming was one of his favorite classes, and the chance to bond with a new creature was exciting.

---

The Beast Taming trials were held in the academy's sprawling grounds, where a variety of magical creatures had been gathered for the students to choose from. Professor Aria Silvane, the Beast Taming instructor, stood at the center of the field, her silver hair glinting in the sunlight. She wore a flowing green robe embroidered with intricate patterns of leaves and vines, and her piercing blue eyes scanned the students with a mix of warmth and authority.

"Welcome, students," she said, her voice calm and melodic. "Today, you will each be paired with a magical creature. Your task is to bond with it over the next 24 hours. This is not just a test of skill, but of trust, patience, and understanding. Remember, every creature is unique, and it is your job to earn its respect."

The students exchanged nervous glances as Professor Silvane began assigning creatures. Oliver was paired with a juvenile griffin, its golden fur and shimmering feathers gleaming in the sunlight. Lily was given a shy moonfox, its silver fur and glowing blue eyes making it look almost ethereal. Ethan, much to his dismay, was paired with a hyperactive fire salamander.

"A salamander?" Ethan said, his voice filled with disbelief. "I was hoping for something cool, like a dragon or a phoenix."

"Be grateful," Lily said, her moonfox curled up in her arms. "At least it's not a Blast-Ended Skrewt."

Ethan groaned, but Oliver couldn't help but laugh. The fire salamander, a small, lizard-like creature with bright orange scales, was currently trying to climb up Ethan's arm, its tail leaving a trail of soot on his robes.

---

The trials began, and the students scattered across the field, each trying to bond with their assigned creature. Oliver approached the griffin cautiously, his heart pounding with excitement. The creature watched him with sharp, intelligent eyes, its beak clicking softly as it tilted its head.

"Hey there," Oliver said, his voice gentle. "I'm Oliver. I'm not going to hurt you."

The griffin let out a low growl, but it didn't move away. Oliver took that as a good sign and slowly extended his hand, offering a piece of raw meat. The griffin sniffed it cautiously before snatching it from his hand, its sharp beak grazing his fingers.

"Good start," Oliver muttered, smiling as the griffin began to eat. He spent the next few hours feeding it, grooming its feathers, and talking to it in a soothing voice. By the end of the day, the griffin was following him around the field, its golden eyes filled with trust.

Lily, meanwhile, had her hands full with the moonfox. The creature was shy and skittish, hiding under a bush whenever she approached. But Lily was patient, sitting quietly nearby and offering it small pieces of fruit. Slowly, the moonfox began to warm up to her, its glowing blue eyes filled with curiosity.

"There you go," Lily whispered, her voice soft and soothing. "I'm not going to hurt you."

The moonfox crept closer, its silver fur glinting in the sunlight. It sniffed her hand cautiously before taking the fruit, its tail wagging softly. Lily smiled, her green eyes filled with triumph.

Ethan, on the other hand, was struggling. The fire salamander was fast and unpredictable, darting around the field and leaving a trail of soot in its wake. Every time Ethan tried to approach it, the creature would scamper away, its bright orange scales glowing with mischief.

"Come on, you little troublemaker," Ethan muttered, chasing after the salamander. "Why can't you be more like Oliver's griffin?"

The salamander let out a high-pitched squeak before darting up a tree, its tail leaving a trail of smoke. Ethan groaned, his robes covered in soot and his hair sticking up in all directions.

"Need some help?" Oliver asked, grinning as he approached.

"No," Ethan said, his voice filled with frustration. "I've got this."

But as the day wore on, it became clear that Ethan was not, in fact, "got this." The salamander continued to evade him, its antics growing more and more ridiculous. At one point, it set a bush on fire, forcing Professor Silvane to intervene with a water spell.

"Reed," she said, her voice stern but amused. "Perhaps you should try a different approach."

Ethan sighed, running a hand through his messy blonde hair. "Yeah, maybe."

---

By the end of the trials, Oliver and Lily had successfully bonded with their creatures. The griffin followed Oliver everywhere, its golden eyes filled with trust, while the moonfox curled up in Lily's arms, its glowing blue eyes filled with contentment.

Ethan, however, was less successful. The fire salamander had finally allowed him to pick it up, but only after it had exhausted itself from running around. It now sat on his shoulder, its bright orange scales glowing faintly as it let out a soft snore.

"Well," Ethan said, his voice filled with resignation. "At least it's not trying to set me on fire anymore."

Oliver and Lily laughed, their voices echoing across the field. Despite the challenges, they had all learned something from the trials. Oliver had discovered the importance of patience and trust, Lily had proven her ability to connect with even the shyest of creatures, and Ethan… well, Ethan had learned that sometimes, even charm and wit weren't enough.

---

That evening, the trio gathered in the common room, their creatures resting nearby. The griffin lay at Oliver's feet, its golden fur gleaming in the firelight, while the moonfox curled up in Lily's lap. Ethan's salamander sat on the arm of the couch, its bright orange scales glowing faintly.

"I think I'll call him Blaze," Ethan said, grinning as he petted the salamander. "What about you, Oliver? Got a name for your griffin?"

Oliver thought for a moment before smiling. "How about Sol? Short for Solaris."

Lily nodded, her green eyes filled with approval. "That's perfect. And I'll call her Luna."

As the fire crackled in the hearth, Oliver felt a sense of accomplishment. The trials had been challenging, but they had also been rewarding. He had bonded with Sol, learned more about himself, and grown closer to his friends.

And as he looked at the bone amulet hidden in his pocket, its faint glow pulsing in time with his heartbeat, he knew that the adventure was just beginning.
