Obsessed with my boss

Chapter 5: Chapter Five

Maya's breath hitched.

The words Damien spoke remained suspended like an enticing test between them.

''We should share something so he has material for conversation''.

She should have stepped away. She should create separation instead of getting any closer. She needed to recall this situation was just a game that did not suit her involvement.

Every logical thought disappeared into thin air because of the electrical energy that pulsed between them as Damien elegantly brushed his fingers along her back.

The subtle smirk on Daniel's face vanished into an expression of deep unease which felt somewhat jealous.

Maya lifted her chin in defiance because Daniel's secret observation of her led to both a soft body movement toward his touch and this reply:

"I didn't know you maintained contact with me Daniel."

A muscle in his jaw ticked. "I don't."

A gentle sound entered Maya's hearing when Damien responded with "Good."

His words sent soft vibrations through her skin. "Because she's mine now."

Silence.

A sharp inhale from Daniel.

The intense beats of her heart became so powerful that she worried both of them could hear them.

''Mine''.

The word held too much possessiveness and casualness in its delivery.

As Damien placed his hand gently against her waist at the curve Maya did not dispute his statement even though she stood there in the heat of his touch.

She had not felt like an abandoned piece for a long while after being the one who stayed behind all this time.

Daniel's expression twisted. Knight, you have disproved my initial assumption about business and pleasure relations between you and your associates.

Damien allowed his lips to form a shape that bordered between a smile and other emotions.

"From my perspective you'd never surrender possession of positive things before diving back in only to see others keeping them."

Daniel stiffened.

Maya exhaled sharply. "We should get back inside."

His grip rested gently on her back while he remained still before finally standing up.

Then he nodded. "Of course."

Maya chose to leave first thus ending whatever enchantment had occurred.

The grips of Damien's hand at her waist during their gala reentry proved to her that their connection still existed.

The game had already begun.

At the gala Maya lost focus on upper-class society because she experienced thrill from elegant conversations and champagne libations and her increasing attraction toward Damien.

Tried, and failed.

Because Damien was there, everywhere.

His discreet manner of speaking her name coupled with his languid hand movements which lingered against her skin hearkened comfort to her body.

The gala proved too much for Maya because she reached her maximum capacity before the event finished.

She handled internal fatigue along with external tiredness from an invisible wall which stood between her and Damien.

During the car journey she remained mostly silent and Damien made no attempt to inquire after what she was thinking.

When his car stopped in front of her building he stared at her although his eye openings stayed unbroken by light.

He expressed those words to her throughout their evening meeting.

Maya hesitated. "No."

A prolonged examination of her face occupied Damien for a short time. Before his inquiry about regrets he addressed her with gentle tones.

A sharp inhale.

The question existed as an indiscernible mystery between both of them.

Maya knew what he was asking.

Not just about tonight.

But about them.

The dancing duo stayed away from the forbidden boundary when approaching it.

Maya swallowed. "I don't know."

Damien's gaze flickered. "Honest."

"I try to be."

His gentle smile flashed when he expressed those words which then vanished again. "Goodnight, Maya."

The next morning, she waited by the car entrance before opening the door to get inside.

She understood that these honorary meetings between them had only just started upon reaching her building entrance.

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

The office personnel kept their voices low upon entering work since a silent rumble spread through the entire building.

Naomi rushed to her desk position right after Maya sat down while watching her with big eyes.

She questioned Maya about her activities from the preceding evening once she took a seat in front of her.

Maya frowned. "What do you mean?"

Naomi scoffed. "Don't play dumb, Sinclair.

Many tabloid newspaper publications today focused on your relationship with Damien as their main story.

Maya's stomach dropped.

Without thinking Naomi brought her phone in front of her.

Maya's breath caught.

There it was—

His relationship with Maya became synonymous with her receiving death notices from headline news.

Media outlets published an enigmatic story about Damien Knight's unknown female companion describing her identity.

Below it, pictures.

The photographs documented Damien's gesture of touching her back as he stood close and his mouth next to her ear while their mutual gaze shared an intimate bond.

Like they weren't just colleagues.

Like they were something more.

Maya's blood ran cold.

Naomi's voice softened. Naomi addressed Maya with quiet concern asking "Maya…"

Maya opened her mouth—

She quickly sealed her lips after the dreaded deep voice entered the space that Maya had been trying to avoid.

"Sinclair. In my office."

Damien.

A brief closure of her eyes brought Maya the moment she needed to exhale.

Showtime.
