Episode 33 - First Commercial Film Part 1
[“Summer Promise” Ryu Yeon-woo misses two question on college entrance exams, becomes an “Child Genius”.]
[Rising star studies as well? Ryu Yeon-woo’s college entrance exam scores are a hot topic.]
[An actor who passes the Korean university entrance exam? What is Ryu Yeon-woo’s exam grade?]
Seong-sik also showed his phone to Yeon-woo.
“Hmm. The reporters have impressive information.”
“Hey, are you talking like it’s nothing?”
Seong-sik looked bewildered at Yeon-woo, who spoke casually as if it were nothing like others.
However, Junsoo, who was looking at Yeon-woo’s class list, nodded.
“Well, it’s not a bad thing at all, is it?”
“That’s true.”
Seong-sik agreed with Junsoo’s words.
“But it seems like there might be a spy among the teachers in school. How did they get this information so quickly?”
While it was well-known within the “Summer Promise” team that Yeon-woo was good at studying, there had never been an article or discussion about his grades being this good.
Ryu Yeon-woo, who had suddenly become a rising star with “Summer Promise” and had been quietly spending half a year without any follow-up variety shows, received a flood of articles out of nowhere, which not only heated up his fan cafe but also caused a buzz on the internet.
Ma-de (wtg050***): Wow, so this “Child Genius” actually exists.
Em-ho-ee (mwlsd***): This seems like God poured talent into him.
Hwa-na-na (answl***): Ryu Yeon-woo is undoubtedly a perfect being.
Jae-jit-neun-gae (dae3***): Why do you call him a being? He’s a person, isn’t he?
Seol-myung-chung (cha03***): Anything with mass is considered a being. It’s associated with matter… (see more)
“Wow, this is crazy. Unbelievable.”
Junsoo, who was browsing the internet comments, shook his head.
“It’s amazing. To think that such a person is my friend.”
It had already been two years since they started attending school together, and Yeon-woo chuckled at Seong-sik’s sudden remark.
“Yeon-woo, are you going to resume your acting career? You’re moving to Seoul, right?”
“Yeah. You guys are going to college in Seoul too.”
Junsoo and Seong-sik nodded.
“That’s right. For now, we’ll go to the same college and, if it doesn’t work out, we can go to a different one in Seoul.”
“It’ll work out. I’m sure of it.”
Yeon-woo patted Junsoo and Seong-sik on the back.
“For a while, I’ll be staying in the apartment provided by my agency, but when I start college, come visit often.”
“Oh, of course!”
And so, Yeon-woo attended school for a week and then returned to Seoul.
He checked the script requests that had piled up and, after consulting with some companies to align with his image, prepared for the shootings.
The name value of “Ryu Yeon-woo” in the industry, which had been fading as other advertisements that had ridden on the temporary popularity of “Summer’s Promise” found new owners, suddenly skyrocketed again due to this college entrance exam issue.
While handling all their tasks, they exude the confident image of the MZ generation, always in search of opportunities. They have successfully met the current industry’s needs for such an image.
“Well, it seems that even when we consider the conditions and image, these two would be a good fit, don’t you think?”
In response to Team Leader Jung’s words, both the marketing team members and Ryu Yeon-woo, who were attending the meeting, nodded.
“Coincidentally, the telecommunications company I’m currently using is also a brand my family likes for outdoor gear.”
“Oh, that’s perfect, then.”
Team Leader Jung smiled at Yeon-woo’s words.
After much deliberation, Yeon-woo and the company chose two advertisements: one for a telecommunications company and the other for an outdoor brand. Since Yeon-woo didn’t have any current schedules, he agreed to the shooting dates arranged by the advertising agency and received the scripts.
The first one to be filmed was a combination advertisement for ST Telecom and their newly launched smartphone model. Even when looking at the storyboard, it was a trendy image advertisement that would be shot entirely on set and blue screen, but when Yeon-woo saw the script, he felt that it was targeted towards him.
Yeon-woo stepped out of the office building’s parking lot as the van’s door opened.
“Min-soo hyung! It’s our first official schedule now.”
“Hahaha. I’m excited. Already.”
While other manager colleagues envied Min-soo, who handled the underage actor, referred to as the “honey bear,” going out to the field was the best part of the job for him.
Soon, next month, Ryu Yeon-woo, whom Min-soo was in charge of, would also become an adult, and the actor himself was overflowing with enthusiasm for his schedule.
Min-soo’s car headed to the filming studio in Pangyo and arrived in front of a large set.
“Welcome. I’ll guide you.”
“Ah, yes. Nice to meet you.”
A scene scrap, dressed in a cap and holding a bundle of papers, rushed over and greeted Yeon-woo.
Yeon-woo and Min-soo got out of the car and followed the scene scrap’s guidance into the set.
From afar, a man with a rugged physique and a characteristic scruffy beard approached as he directed the set. This was Director Lee Yong-soo.
Yeon-woo didn’t know much about the advertising industry, but after listening to Min-soo’s explanation, he understood that Director Lee was a well-known director who often worked with young actors.
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Ryu Yeon-woo. I’m Director Lee Yong-soo.”
Director Lee extended his hand somewhat formally for a handshake.
Yeon-woo smiled warmly, shook Director Lee’s hand with both of his, and greeted him with a bow.
“Hello, Director. I look forward to working with you today. I’m Ryu Yeon-woo.”
With a bright smile and cheerful greeting, Director Lee couldn’t help but soften his demeanor.
Director Lee often encountered young actors or rising stars who behaved rudely or arrogantly, so he didn’t have a fondness for them. However, the first impression of the friend he would be working with today was a positive one.
“Confident and cheerful. That’s good. My daughter is a fan of yours, by the way.”
“Oh, really? This is my first time shooting an ad, so I’ll learn a lot today.”
With a smiling face, the first meeting began, and Director Lee did his best to lead it smoothly until the filming. He even jokingly said he would sell his daughter to ensure the shoot went well. In reality, he had never claimed his daughter was a fan, but he figured she would like Ryu Yeon-woo since he was a rising star.
“Alright, everyone, pay attention. Our protagonist today is Actor Ryu Yeon-woo. Applause!”
When the director introduced Yeon-woo to the crew with a loud voice, applause erupted.
– Swoosh. –
– Wow! –
The director and the experienced filming team worked together to create a flexible atmosphere that boosted the energy on the set.
“Hello. Thank you.”
Yeon-woo greeted those around him with a nod.
“You’ve seen the storyboard, but our schedule is a bit tight today, so it would be best to start shooting right away to finish before the date changes…”
“Oh, yes, of course.”
Director Lee Yong-soo called a scene scrap to guide Yeon-woo to the dressing room.
After completing his makeup, Yeon-woo changed into white pants and a clean blue shirt, transforming into a stylish newcomer, and then entered the shooting location.
Director Lee Yong-soo explained as he looked at the storyboard.
“Now, Actor, you’ll be sitting over there, pretending to study, and then you’ll stretch and grab the smartphone with a wire. After that…”
After listening to the director’s instructions, Yeon-woo visualized the actions in his mind and nodded.
“Yes, I’ll do my best.”
Yeon-woo briefly greeted the supporting actors who were waiting and stood in front of the prepared desk.
“Alright, let’s connect the actor.”
The crew members approached and connected wires to various parts of Yeon-woo’s body. In this scene, Yeon-woo, who was studying in a university classroom set, grabs a smartphone, and his body rises into the air before lying down, with the surrounding environment changing through CG just before the scene transition.
“Alright, we’ll start with the full shot first since the tight and close shots will be done separately. Be careful not to hit the desk with your legs when you rise, and… Ready, cue!”
Yeon-woo naturally stretched while scribbling in the prepared study book, then put down his pencil.
“Cut! Yeon-woo, turn your face more towards the camera. Okay, let’s continue.”
Following the director’s instruction, Yeon-woo naturally turned his face towards the camera while stretching, then picked up the smartphone that was on his desk.
“Start pulling from the legs!”
To pull the connected wires, the crew members pulled ropes that were connected to the ceiling.
Yeon-woo’s body slowly floated up.
“Background students, show a surprised expression and look on. Now, it’s good.”
Floating about 2 meters in the air, he laid down in the predetermined pose, slightly bending his legs and holding the position using his abs as if he were in zero gravity.
“Wow, nice! Hold it just a little longer.”
Pleased that Yeon-woo maintained the pose as naturally as he had envisioned, the director was excited.
“Okay, cut! Slowly lower the wires. Carefully, carefully!”
Yeon-woo slowly descended and the rushing crew members carefully caught him.
The director approached Yeon-woo.
“Wow, Yeon-woo, you’re pretty strong, huh? That looked really natural. Your posture was excellent.”
“Ah, thank you.”
Yeon-woo’s well-trained body, shaped by daily workouts, easily handled this situation. He was confident in using his body freely, thanks to the demanding training he had received during his agent days.
“Do I need to do the tight shot one more time, like just now?”
“Yes, of course.”
With Yeon-woo’s affirmation, the director shouted “okay” and started the shooting again. In the same pose, the pole camera moved in closer to capture Yeon-woo’s upper body. He maintained the posture with just his upper body muscles and smiled effortlessly.
“Very good. Okay, cut!”
Applauding and shouting “okay,” along with the director, Yeon-woo’s body slowly descended once again.
“Alright. We’ll move on to the next scene right away. Yeon-woo, and the supporting actors, change your outfits.”
“Yes.”
The approaching crew members removed the wires, and following their guidance, Yeon-woo changed into the prepared costume in the dressing room. This time, the concept was the opposite of the previous scene: black jeans and a leather jacket. The makeup team came in and applied eyeliner more intensely, giving him a fierce and cool look.
As they entered the shooting location, the crew members admired his appearance.
“Wow, now I get why he stood out.”
“He was handsome earlier too, but this atmosphere is charming.”
The director approached amidst the admiration among the crew members and explained the upcoming scene.
“This scene follows the CG processing from earlier. After landing on the floor, you hand the phone to the supporting actor following a specific path…”
Since it was the content he had checked in the storyboard, Yeon-woo immediately understood and nodded.
“Alright. Director.”
Once again, he checked the movements with the supporting actors and the crew members and then watched the rehearsal performed by the scene scrap.
“Now, let’s start shooting.”
Like a cameraman on an idol stage, the director, carrying a camera attached to a gimbal, stood in front of Yeon-woo, ready to capture the scene.
“Action. Cue.
