Chapter 236: Women He Failed To Protect
Asuka took a deep breath, struggling to find the right words. She loved Haruto, and she knew Chiyo loved him too, but this was too much.
She didn't care if he was part of a gang, a drug dealer, or even a serial killer. She could ignore all of that and act like nothing happened.
But today was different—he had endangered Chiyo, their baby, and himself. That was unforgivable.
"Please, Asuka, I won't let this happen again." Haruto's voice was raw with desperation. "I will make things right."
She had heard those words more times than she could count.
'I won't let this happen again.'
'I will change.'
Empty promises made by men trying to protect their fragile sense of commitment. In the end, none of them ever kept their word. It was always the same cycle of mistakes and regrets.
Yet, as she looked into Haruto's green eyes—so deep, so full of guilt and determination—something held her back from rejecting him outright.
'Is it because I love him too much?' The thought made her stomach twist.
She pinched the bridge of her nose, trying to steady herself. "Haruto, you hide too much from us," she said, her voice heavy with exhaustion.
"I don't know what to do with you."
Tears welled up in her eyes, and the sight of them shattered Haruto.
The deep guilt clawed at him, threatening to consume him whole. Unable to bear it, he stepped forward and pulled Asuka into a gentle hug, his hand rubbing soothing circles on her back.
"I'm sorry," he whispered. "I'll tell you everything after this, but please… don't separate us."
Even as he comforted her, his mind was a storm. He hated everything—Ren, his men, Daiki—but more than anyone, he hated himself.
He should have known better.
He should have protected them.
Asuka pulled away, wiping her tears. "You're still in high school. You're still young, weak—you don't understand everything yet," she said, her voice trembling.
"For the sake of all of us, could you just stop? Stop being in a gang, stop all of this before it's too late?"
Her plea stunned him. She was asking him to abandon everything, to walk away from the path he had set for himself.
But how could he?
He was already too deep in this world, and there was still revenge to be had. Ren was so close—Daiki's life was still his to take.
He couldn't just give up now, not when he was standing at the edge of it all.
Before he could respond, a sharp scream shattered the tense atmosphere.
Mari's voice rang through the hallway, and Haruto spun around in time to see Ayaka collapse to the floor.
His heart lurched as he rushed to her side, cradling her in his arms. Her skin was cold, her breathing ragged, and her expression twisted in pain.
"Doctor! Nurse! Someone, help her!"
Haruto's voice cracked with panic as the hospital staff rushed toward them, quickly moving Ayaka onto a stretcher.
He turned to Asuka, his eyes pleading for understanding. She nodded, already knowing what he wanted—what he needed to do.
Without hesitation, he followed the staff as they wheeled Ayaka toward the ER, his mind racing with a thousand guilt and unspoken words.

"Ms. Yoshida has two broken ribs, but fortunately, there's no internal bleeding," the doctor explained.
"However, she needs plenty of rest due to the stress her body has endured."
"I see… Thank you, doctor. I should have brought her here sooner."
Haruto bowed in gratitude, though his mind was clouded with anger and resentment. He knew he needed to stay calm.
The doctor regarded him with a mix of concern and suspicion. "I don't know what happened to her or how high schoolers behave these days," he said, pausing before adding, "but it might be best if you talk to an adult—or even the police."
"Ah, yes, I'll contact her parents," Haruto replied, watching as the doctor gave him a final glance before leaving.
Now that Ayaka had been admitted, he found himself unsure of how to break the news to her aunt. For now, he decided to let her rest.
She looked calmer, her breathing even, likely thanks to the painkillers.
Watching her sleep peacefully, Haruto remained seated by her bedside, lost in thought.
Leaning forward, he clasped his hands together, his fingers interlocked as he mulled over how to destroy Ren.
That bastard had crossed too many lines. He needed to pay for everything he had done—not just to Ayaka but to all of Haruto's women.
The image of Ren's sneering, mocking face was burned into his mind.
'I thought he was dumb, but turns out I was the idiot,' he mused bitterly. 'I need to take him out as soon as possible. I don't care if Daiki sees my intention—I just need to end him.'
Lost in his thoughts, he didn't notice when the door slid open. Two figures stepped inside, their presence going unnoticed until Enji suddenly grabbed his shoulder.
Haruto jolted, his eyes flashing dangerously as he snapped his head up—only to see Enji staring back at him. Letting out a heavy sigh, he relaxed against the chair.
"Fuck! You scared me!" He ran a hand through his hair.
"We've been calling you this whole time," Arataki said with a shrug.
Enji's expression was serious. "How's Ms. Hayase? I heard she was pregnant. Is the baby okay?"
Haruto's chest tightened. Enji was the one who had found Chiyo, and he probably blamed himself for not getting to her sooner.
"I… don't know," Haruto admitted honestly, his gaze dropping to the floor.
Enji frowned. "What do you mean you don't know? Isn't that your baby?!"
Haruto's eyes widened. "So you knew?"
"Of course I knew! She was calling your name over and over!" Enji's voice rose with frustration. "And you're here instead—with another girl?!"
"Hey, she's hurt too," Haruto shot back, slapping Enji's hand off his shoulder.
"And? She's stable now. We'll stay with her. You need to go to Ms. Hayase," Enji said firmly.
He had a point. But Haruto was terrified. What if the baby hadn't survived?
What if Chiyo never forgave him? What if she decided to leave him?
His mind raced with endless, suffocating thoughts, and sweat beaded at his temple.
Enji and Arataki exchanged a look before Arataki spoke. "Haruto… postponing the truth won't make it hurt any less. Chiyo needs you right now."
Haruto clenched his fists. Never in this second life had he felt such overwhelming fear. But he knew they were right. He had to face whatever awaited him.
Pushing himself off the sofa, he glanced back at Ayaka one last time before turning to his friends.
"Take care of Ayaka for me," he said, then walked out the door.
Haruto walked toward Chiyo's hospital room, his mind tangled in a web of thoughts he couldn't unravel.
Before he even realized it, he was already standing in front of her door.
The hallway was empty—perfect. Asuka was probably busy handling the administrative paperwork.
He exhaled shakily, then raised a hand to knock.
A familiar voice answered, soft yet fragile.
"Who is it? Asuka?"
It sounded as if nothing had happened today. As if she weren't lying in that bed because of the nightmare she had just endured.
Swallowing hard, Haruto slid the door open and stepped inside. But he didn't dare to look at her.
His gaze remained fixed on the floor beneath him, and even that felt like it might swallow him whole.
"Haruto?" Chiyo's voice wavered.
Hearing the tremor in her tone, he finally forced himself to lift his head.
She was crying.
Tears streaked her face, raw and unrestrained, exposing her most vulnerable self. The sight of her like this shattered him.
Without hesitation, he crossed the room and wrapped her in his arms, holding her tightly.
"Yes, it's me, Chiyo," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "I'm so sorry. I couldn't protect you."
She only nodded, burying her face in his chest as sobs wracked her body. It was a desperate, broken cry, one that sent a sharp pain straight through his gut. He was terrified of what she would say next.
"Where were you all this time? What took you so long?" Chiyo's voice cracked with anguish.
"I was calling for you—over and over—but you never answered!"
Her words crushed him.
He had failed her. Failed to be there when she needed him most. Failed to be the protector he swore he'd be.
He had been so consumed by revenge, so fixated on making Ren pay, that he had lost sight of the people he was supposed to protect.
He had forgotten that every action has consequences.
"I thought you would protect me… protect our baby!"
A suffocating silence followed.
Haruto's breath caught in his throat, his heart twisting painfully. The dream he had of their child, of their future together—it had all crumbled in an instant.
He wasn't worthy of being a father. Not if he couldn't even keep them safe.
"Chiyo… I—I don't know what to do," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
He didn't even know if he had the right to mend what was broken between them.
If Chiyo wanted to leave him, he wouldn't stop her. It was the least he could do.
