Neon Shinobi: The Last Ghost

Chapter 2: Chapter - 2

The streets pulsed with artificial life. Neon signs flickered above, casting shifting patterns of red and blue across the rain-slick pavement. The city was alive in a way that felt unnatural—like a body kept breathing by machines long after its soul had left.

Naruto moved through the empty alleyways, his steps lighter than they should have been for someone with a body of steel. His senses extended far beyond what they once were—he could hear the faint hum of power lines, the rhythmic pulse of data streams coursing through the city's infrastructure, the distant chatter of synthetic voices over encrypted frequencies. He was wired into the world in ways he barely understood, and yet, it felt almost… instinctual.

A shadow shifted ahead. His body reacted before his mind could process it. His foot pushed off the ground, launching him into the air, just as the space where he had stood exploded in a storm of plasma fire. Sparks rained down as the metal walls of the alley melted under the heat.

He landed, eyes narrowing. Across from him stood a figure draped in black synthetic armor, its surface shifting like liquid metal. The visor covering its face displayed only a glowing red circle that locked onto him like a targeting reticle. It was different from the enforcers he had faced before—more advanced, more precise. It held a blade, its edge shimmering with an energy field designed to cut through even the hardest alloys.

Naruto's lips curled into a grin. "You came fast."

The figure didn't respond. It simply moved.

One moment it was standing still. The next, it was on him, its blade arcing toward his throat. Naruto twisted, bending his body in a way no human should be able to, his metal spine allowing a flexibility beyond flesh. The blade passed inches from his neck as he countered, driving his knee into the figure's torso. The impact was like hitting a reinforced wall, but the force still sent it skidding backward.

He didn't let up. His arm shifted mid-motion, panels sliding apart as mechanical components reconfigured. The next second, his fist slammed forward, releasing a burst of chakra-infused energy. A shockwave rippled outward, warping the air with raw power. The figure barely managed to evade, its speed matching his own.

This one was different. It wasn't just a machine. It was thinking, adapting.

The two clashed again, their movements blurring through the alley. Blades of energy met chakra-forged strength, each impact sending tremors through the surrounding walls. Naruto moved instinctively, every feint, every strike calculated in a way that felt… beyond him. As if something deep inside, something newly awakened, was guiding him.

Then he saw it. A fraction of a second where the figure's movement lagged, where its adaptive programming had not yet caught up. He exploited it without hesitation.

His hand shot forward, and in an instant, a sphere of swirling energy formed—his Rasengan, no longer just a mass of chakra, but a fusion of power and machine. Data threads wove through it, its surface crackling with plasma filaments.

He drove it forward.

The attack connected, and the figure's armor warped around the point of impact before collapsing in on itself. The explosion that followed was brief but devastating. The figure was sent hurtling through the air, crashing through a neon-lit sign before crumpling into the pavement.

Naruto exhaled, his systems recalibrating. His eyes focused on the wreckage. But before he could approach, something else happened. The downed figure convulsed, and then, its body disintegrated into a swarm of tiny mechanical fragments, which scattered into the darkness, disappearing before he could stop them.

It had escaped.

He clenched his fists. That wasn't an ordinary enforcer. Someone had sent it. Someone who knew he was here.

A soft chime echoed in his head—a new data stream opening in his neural interface. It wasn't an attack. It was a message.

A voice, distorted and synthetic, whispered directly into his mind. "You are not alone, Uzumaki. But you are not free either. The hunt has only begun."

Naruto's eyes burned as he stared into the neon-lit abyss of the city.

Let them come.
