Chapter 11: Chapter 38: Natsuki Subaru’s Resignation
Chapter 38: Natsuki Subaru's Resignation
Facing the fiercely incoming iron ball, Natsuki Subaru, who had been somewhat on guard, reacted a bit slowly due to a moment of confusion in his thoughts.
This attack caused him to miss grabbing something he should have caught, and because he was thinking, he had already lost the best opportunity to dodge the fierce iron ball.
However, Subaru quickly seized the moment to dodge, paying the price of one arm to avoid being crushed into mince by the iron ball.
He moved his body to the side and forcefully struck the side of the iron ball with his right hand. The consequence was that Subaru's arm was pierced by the iron spikes on the ball, and the sound of his bones cracking was heard.
But without a doubt, this action saved his life.
Just a slight deflection of the iron ball's direction was enough to save a life; as for the cost to his hand, since this is a fantasy world, it can be healed.
If it really comes down to it, he might die after gathering all the information… no, that thought is not allowed!
Covering his now immobile right arm and enduring the pain shooting through his hand, Subaru looked at Rem, who was slowly retracting the iron ball, and said,
"Senpai, could you listen to me for a bit? I really am not a witch cultist."
"Shut up! Stay right where you are! I'll make sure you die a painful death!"
Looking at Rem's current expression, Subaru deeply understood that communication between them was impossible.
He sighed, stood up straight, and shouted,
"It really hurts! Since there's no other way, I have to use my secret move."
"Already ready to attack, witch cultist?!"
"I told you, I'm not a witch cultist. Well, since I can't communicate with you now, are you ready, senpai? My secret move will definitely make you lose."
Subaru showed a somewhat ugly smile to Rem.
With her wary expression, he took a deep breath and shouted,
"Help! Murder! Help!!!"
"What! You!" Rem was stunned and angry, staring at Subaru, unsure whether to immediately crush him into mince with her weapon.
In that hesitation, she missed her chance to kill Subaru.
"Rem, what are you doing?"
"Sister… he's a witch cultist. I'm just cleaning up."
"Oh my, what a surprising scene~~~ Rem, can you explain to me?"
"What's going on? I heard a noise... Subaru, what's wrong? Is there an enemy?"
Subaru's mouth twitched slightly as Emilia finally arrived.
His eyes glanced briefly at Ram and Roswaal.
Forcing a smile, he said,
"Ah, nothing, maybe just some misunderstanding... but I could really use some treatment now. It hurts a lot."
"Oh, sorry, I didn't realize at first. I'll treat you right now."
After looking at Emilia beside him, Subaru glanced sarcastically at Roswaal and Ram and said,
"You really are quick to come."
Ram looked at Subaru without saying anything, while Roswaal continued his strange tone and behavior, saying,
"Of course~~ this is my home after all. Hearing a noise, how could I not come quickly? If someone were hurt, I'd be very sad~~"
"Hah, I'll pretend I really believe that. But Lord Roswaal, I think I should find another place to work or just resign outright."
Though Subaru smiled, there was no real joy in it.
At first, he thought someone hostile was targeting the mansion's people, and he was just the weakest target, so he wanted to prevent unfortunate events.
But after being attacked by Rem, that thought faded.
Then shouting for help, Roswaal and Ram appeared quickly.
It was hard not to suspect they had been watching all along.
Since his death might be related to their distrust, there was no reason to stay.
Worrying about being killed one day again, he might as well resign early, find another job, and enjoy his time in this other world.
Perhaps sensing Subaru's thoughts, after examining him for a moment, Roswaal said,
"Alright then, once you recover from your injuries, I'll see to your departure. Do you want me to help find you another job?"
"No thanks. To be honest, apart from Lia, Beatrice, and Puck, I don't trust any of you.
Just pay me the wages I earned these days, and I'll leave on my own. I don't need your concern."
"Subaru?"
Subaru glanced at Emilia, who called his name, then moved his right hand a little and said,
"Thank you, Emilia. That's it for today. Sorry for disturbing your rest. I'll go back to rest now."
With those words, Subaru walked past Roswaal, Ram, and Rem with a cold face. He stopped, turned back, and said to Rem,
"I'm not a witch cultist. I don't even know what the witch cult is.
Also, Roswaal, I hope you don't send someone to kill me after I leave. If that happens, I definitely won't forgive you."
"Subaru, what are you talking about? You're Emilia's savior and a staff member of the mansion. I wouldn't do such a thing. Do you think I'm that kind of person~~~"
Roswaal's attitude only made Subaru laugh bitterly, then say,
"Do you think after all this, I still trust you? Sorry, my trust isn't that cheap.
You can't just say something and expect me to trust you again."
Looking at Ram then, Subaru's expression became a little sad.
He withdrew his gaze and said, "I thought we were friends..." before leaving without looking back.
As for what Emilia, Roswaal, and the others planned to do afterward, it was none of his concern.
He had already decided to quit.
Let whoever wants to deal with it do so.
With this thought, Subaru returned to his room, took off his butler uniform, and changed into his sportswear.
When he planned to pack his things, he realized he didn't have much worth packing.
Shaking his head, Subaru placed the butler uniform on the table and lay down on the bed to sleep, but the events of the night made peaceful sleep impossible.
Turning over in bed, Subaru recalled the past few days' life, unable to suppress the disappointment and sadness in his heart.
"Why do I have to be killed over some inexplicable reason?"
