Raikage burst into hearty laughter again when he saw that Rinjin was completely unharmed.
It had been a long time since such joyful laughter had echoed from the Third Raikage's office.
After a while, his laughter gradually subsided.
"Raimui, although you were reckless during the mission to seal the Two-Tails, you did buy precious time for your comrades in the village. After some discussion, the village has decided to reward you with a house."
With that, Raikage's thick finger pointed to a spot not far outside the window. There, atop a towering mountain, stood a cluster of residential buildings built into the slope. It was a place reserved for those who had made outstanding contributions to the village.
Look at this! Hiruzen Sarutobi, come take a look! This is what we call generosity and grandeur! Just taking the Two-Tails for a stroll, and the Third Raikage rewards me with a top-floor scenic apartment. This is Kumogakure? I love it! I absolutely love it!
However, Rinjin firmly shook his head. First, it was about staying true to his character; second, he had his eye on the grand Senju estate. Once Rie got familiar with Mito Uzumaki and Tsunade, they could stay there permanently. And when Mito went to join Hashirama in the afterlife, and Tsunade left home after losing her brother and boyfriend, wouldn't that luxurious mansion naturally belong to the Sakuya family?
Thinking of this, Rinjin feigned an enthusiastic expression and said, "Lord Raikage, I don't want the house. Please give me money instead. I need to buy weights for training!"
Hearing this, Raikage pondered for a moment, then looked at Rinjin with a pleased expression and nodded slightly. "Alright then. Awai, take him to get the money."
"How much?"
"Two million ryo."
The moment he heard this number, Rinjin's mind immediately calculated the exchange rate between the Land of Fire and the Land of Lightning currencies: 1:1.2. That was equivalent to over 1.6 million ryo in the Land of Fire! Look at this! Look! What does it mean to be generous? I'm talking to you, Hiruzen Sarutobi!
Actually, it wasn't surprising that Kumogakure was so wealthy. The unique geographical position of the Land of Lightning meant it only bordered the tiny Land of Moon. As a result, even though the Land of Lightning was about the same size as the Land of Fire, Kumogakure's border defense expenses were far lower than Konoha's. Moreover, while the Land of Lightning was mountainous, its climate wasn't harsh, and its arable land wasn't much less than Konoha's. Most importantly, Kumogakure didn't have as many clans as Konoha. With fewer people to share the pie, there was naturally more to allocate to the civilian shinobi. This was why, despite being so warlike, the Land of Lightning rarely produced rogue ninjas. At least in Rinjin's memory, every country had rogue ninjas in the Akatsuki, even small villages like Takigakure. But the Land of Lightning? Not a single one.
Here, whoever had the strongest fists became the leader. It was simple, brutal, and fair. Plus, with money to earn, who in their right mind would become a rogue ninja?
As Rinjin and Awai left the office, the Third Raikage recalled how Rinjin had been blasted away by him yet emerged unscathed. He couldn't help but marvel, "That kid Raimui, he's tough! He's got the makings of someone who can master the Lightning Release Chakra Mode!"
Fukai, who had been silently present in the office, suddenly spoke timidly, "Uncle, do you want him to become 'B'?"
Hearing this, the Raikage's smile slowly faded. After a long silence, he shook his head quietly.
...
Leaving the Raikage's office, Rinjin followed Awai to her adjacent secretary's office. The room was small, with just a desk, a sofa set, and a coffee table.
"Wait here. I'll get the money," Awai said, seating Rinjin on the sofa before heading to her desk to prepare the cash.
Rinjin, now back to his usual nonchalant demeanor, began casually observing his surroundings. Perhaps it was all the talking, or maybe his adrenaline rush from earlier had worn off, but he suddenly felt thirsty.
"Secretary Awai, is the water drinkable?" Rinjin asked, pointing at the teapot and cup on the table.
"The tea's cold," Awai replied without looking up as she counted the money.
"That's fine," Rinjin said casually.
He poured himself a cup of tea, downed it in one gulp, smacked his lips, and remarked, "This water's pretty good. Where's it from?"
Awai's hand paused for a split second before resuming her counting. "It's from the Land of Tea. Do you like it? I can give you a pack."
"No need. You keep it for yourself," Rinjin replied with a wave of his hand.
Soon, Rinjin left Awai's office with a small suitcase in hand, completely unaware that the woman in high heels, who walked without making a sound, was now standing at the doorway, staring intently at his back with one eye visible.
...
With his beloved money in hand, Rinjin left the Raikage building and found a rather shabby-looking smithy. He planned to get himself a pair of arm guards like those worn by the future Fourth Raikage.
As time passed, Rinjin's physical strength had become increasingly monstrous, and the iron sand inside his body was gradually losing its effectiveness. Not only that, but the scattered iron sand often caused him trouble, gathering in odd places and blocking the flow of various bodily fluids. It was incredibly annoying!
So, new weights were now a priority.
After briefly explaining his requirements and agreeing to pick up the order in two days, Rinjin left, ignoring the blacksmith's peculiar expression.
Back at Raimui's small apartment, just as Rinjin was about to head to the bathroom, there was a knock at the door.
Clutching his rear in discomfort, Rinjin opened the door with an annoyed expression.
Outside stood two men and a woman, all dressed as shinobi from the village.
"Hello, are you Raimui?" asked the middle-aged man in the center.
Rinjin nodded and casually picked his nose. "That's me. Who are you?"
"Nice to meet you. I'm Ryuto, the captain of this team," the man said, gesturing to the defiant-looking boy and the expressionless girl beside him. "This is Ueto Kohaku, and this is Unkawa Yui. We'll be your new teammates from now on."
With a bright smile, the handsome black man extended his hand, revealing a set of gleaming white teeth.
Rinjin was momentarily stunned before extending his right hand—the one he had been clutching his rear with—and shook hands with him.
"Sorry, come in," Rinjin said as he invited the trio inside.
Raimui's apartment was small, with just a bed and a low table besides the bathroom. Sitting at the low table, Rinjin scratched his head lazily, his eyes half-closed.
"Sorry, no one told me I'd be joining a new team. I wasn't prepared to host guests."
Hearing this, Ryuto asked curiously, "Awai-sama didn't mention it to you?"
"Nope," Rinjin replied, shaking his head.
Ryuto gave an awkward laugh. "Maybe Awai-sama was too busy and forgot."
Seeing Rinjin's half-asleep demeanor, Ryuto hesitated for a moment before explaining, "Raimui, here's the situation. I'm a Chūnin and the team captain. Yui and Kohaku are Genin. Our previous member died during a mission, so the village assigned you to our team. After the Two-Tails incident two months ago, the team hasn't taken on any missions outside the village. With the Chūnin Exams coming up in two months, we'll be doing a lot of missions to prepare."
If it had been any other Genin, Ryuto wouldn't have said so much. But this was Raimui—the one who had risked his life to save many comrades during the Two-Tails rampage. Though he didn't have the title of "hero," those who had fought in that battle were deeply grateful to him.
After listening to Ryuto, Rinjin pondered for a moment before lazily asking, "So, Captain Ryuto, when do you plan to start taking missions?"
Ryuto's eyes lit up at being called "Captain" and he replied firmly, "As soon as possible."
Rinjin nodded slowly. "Then two days from now would be best. I've ordered some ninja tools that'll be ready then."
After a brief pause, Rinjin added, "No need to bring me along when picking up missions from the Raikage's office. Just call me when it's time to leave."
Though Rinjin's tone was casual, his words implied that he didn't care what kind of missions they took. This was part of his character. Raimui wasn't the type to suddenly become polite and humble. After the loss of a comrade, he had buried his arrogance deep within himself, presenting a lazy and indifferent exterior while occasionally revealing flashes of his former pride. At the same time, he despised anything that interrupted his training.
Ryuto, Yui, and Kohaku left Raimui's apartment after finalizing the details. Walking down the street, Kohaku, who always wore a defiant expression, suddenly spoke up. "That Raimui guy isn't like what you described, Captain. I thought he'd look down on us, given how he saved so many lives!"
Ryuto chuckled and shook his head. "No, Raimui is still proud. Didn't you hear him say we should call him only when it's time to leave?"
"What's wrong with that?" Kohaku asked, confused.
"It means he doesn't care about the missions or their difficulty. It shows he believes his strength is above ours."
Hearing this, Kohaku muttered under his breath, "What's the big deal? He's just a Genin."
...
Time flew by, and two days passed in the blink of an eye.
Rinjin picked up his new weights from the smithy. Looking at the arm guards, which were as thick as his waist, Rinjin nodded in satisfaction. Struggling slightly, he raised his hand and gave the terrified blacksmith a thumbs-up.
With his new weights in hand, Rinjin began his training. Thanks to his character setting, he could train openly without sneaking around like he had in Konoha. His training plan was simple: hammer the mountain.
Monkey D. Garp had punched mountains and turned himself into one of the strongest in the One Piece world. Rinjin thought, "I'll do the same! When I've flattened the Land of Lightning into a plain, I'll have mastered my ultimate technique!"
And so, with his bulky arm guards, Rinjin left the village and found a towering mountain to begin his training.
...
Three days passed in the blink of an eye.
Ryuto's team had gone to the Raikage's office to pick up a mission, only to be scolded by the Raikage himself for not having their team fully assembled. Left with no choice, they went to find their newest member, Raimui.
When they arrived at Raimui's apartment and knocked on the door, there was no response. Just then, an elderly woman from the neighboring apartment poked her head out.
"Are you looking for Raimui?" she asked.
"Yes, ma'am," Ryuto replied, bowing slightly. "I'm Ryuto, Raimui's team captain."
The old woman smiled and nodded. "That boy isn't home. He's training at Thunder Mountain, south of the village."
"Thank you," Ryuto said, bowing again before leading his fully armed team toward Thunder Mountain.
"Ugh, why does he have to go so far? Can't he train in the village?" Kohaku complained.
"It's fine," Ryuto replied with a cheerful smile.
The three left the village and headed toward Thunder Mountain. From a distance, they could hear a series of loud, muffled booms echoing through the air.
Exchanging glances, the trio quickened their pace toward the source of the noise. Rounding the mountain, they finally spotted Raimui, his back to them, sitting cross-legged on the ground. He wore massive arm guards, and his right hand was raised high in the air.
Then, with a heavy swing, he brought his hand down.
The ground shook violently, and a deafening boom reverberated through the area. Raimui scratched his head in frustration, seemingly dissatisfied with the result.
Looking at the cracked and fractured ground around Raimui, Ryuto swallowed hard, a bead of sweat rolling down his temple. This... is he a monster? Even in a village full of muscle-bound warriors, this guy could easily stand out!
Shifting his gaze, Ryuto saw that the once-majestic Thunder Mountain now had a massive chunk missing, as if it had been bitten by some colossal creature. My god... is this what he calls training? Terrifying!
Beside him, Kohaku and Yui were utterly speechless, their mouths agape as drool dripped from their chins. Their usual defiance and coldness were nowhere to be seen—only shock remained.
At that moment, they finally understood why Raimui didn't care about the missions. This guy was a complete monster!
"Boom!"
Another tremor shook the earth as Raimui swung his arm again, scratching his head in frustration.
The sound snapped the trio out of their stupor. Swallowing hard, Ryuto wiped away his sweat and led Kohaku and Yui toward Raimui.
But when they got closer and saw what Raimui was actually doing, their faces turned dark.
Raimui was surrounded by a pile of walnuts. Yes, walnuts.
The bastard was smashing walnuts with his massive arm guards.
"Boom!" Another walnut was obliterated, the nut inside reduced to powder. It was as if the walnut was screaming, "I'd rather be crushed to dust than let you eat me!"
Raimui scratched his head in frustration again.
...
Sensing the trio's presence, Raimui turned around, his messy hair resembling a bird's nest. He looked at Ryuto with an embarrassed smile.
"Captain, you caught me. Sorry, I just can't seem to control my strength."
Seeing Raimui's embarrassed smile, Ryuto and the other two were completely speechless.
