Chapter 140: Chapter 140: Anko’s Surprise
"Damn it."
Anko sat heavily on the ground, frustration clear on her face.
Looking up at her smug friend, she bit her lip in dissatisfaction, grinding her teeth in frustration. "I actually lost."
Although she was a Special Jonin, her strength shone primarily in normal situations.
If she fully unleashed her abilities using summoning jutsu to call upon a powerful giant snake, she could rival or even defeat most regular Jonin in combat.
But today, Kurenai, who had only recently become a Jonin herself, had defeated her with surprising ease. Even Anko's mighty snake summon had been dispatched.
Looking at the forest filled with earthen spears, each over two or three meters tall and still covered in snake blood, Anko was awestruck.
This powerful Earth Style jutsu was something Kurenai must have just learned. Most likely, it was something she had picked up from Kiyoshi.
Not long ago, they'd both undertaken an S-ranked mission together, facing off against a formidable band of rogue ninja. But back then, Kurenai hadn't used anything like this.
Knowing Kurenai as well as she did, Anko felt sure that Kurenai couldn't have mastered such an advanced jutsu in such a short time.
"Tsk, tsk, that was impressive."
Kiyoshi walked over, smiling at the unscathed Kurenai. "Kurenai-nee, you've gotten really good with that Genjutsu."
The technique Kurenai used wasn't actually a Lightning Style jutsu.
While Jonin can indeed train hard to develop new chakra natures they didn't originally possess, it usually takes a great deal of chakra to perform such jutsu, and they rarely exhibit the same power or ease as using a natural affinity.
The Genjutsu: Thunderous Echo Technique, however, wasn't just an auditory illusion—it blended sight and sound, creating a dual-sensory Genjutsu.
Although it was only a B-rank illusion, a powerful ninja who sensed it coming could dispel it with relative ease.
Its strength lay in mimicking a Lightning Style attack, silently trapping its target without them noticing, catching them completely off guard.
"It's all thanks to you, Kiyoshi," Kurenai replied with a smile.
Although she had signed a summoning contract with the Lizard Clan, Kurenai had mostly focused her recent efforts on mastering Fire Style and Earth Style ninjutsu.
She hadn't yet had the time to fully train her summoning abilities. Otherwise, she would have summoned her spirit beast to compete directly with Anko's snake summon.
"In terms of ninjutsu, Kurenai-nee, you're already incredibly skilled." Kiyoshi said, walking over to Anko, unwrapping the bloodied bandages around her arm to check her wound.
He focused a gentle green chakra in his hand, using Mystical Palm Jutsu to treat her injury.
Smiling, he looked back at Kurenai, "Next, aside from leaving a couple of Shadow Clones to continue training in ninjutsu, you could spend some time practicing summoning techniques and finding a suitable lizard partner who can work seamlessly with you in combat."
Typically, summoning beasts with established clans and long histories come in vast numbers.
However, most skilled ninja select a few that match their own fighting style and train with them, building rapport.
In different battle situations, they summon the specific partners best suited to the task.
Some ninja even set aside dedicated training time with their spirit animals to build teamwork and ensure maximum combat effectiveness.
"That's what I was thinking too." Kurenai grinned, clearly excited about her lizard summons.
"Huh?" Anko looked at her in surprise, "Kurenai, you signed a summoning contract too?"
In Konoha, those with large summon beasts were rare.
Only a select few possessed them unless, like Kakashi, they had established bonds with animals they raised, like his pack of ninja hounds that helped him in battle.
"What, did you think you're the only one allowed to have a summoning contract?" Kurenai teased, lifting her chin with a hint of pride.
"Was it Kiyoshi?" Anko glanced at him, a bit envious. It was clear that Kiyoshi had been instrumental in Kurenai's rapid improvement.
He had even arranged her summoning contract, which Anko couldn't help but envy.
"Alright, you already have your own summon, and it's from Ryuchi Cave, one of the three great summoning sanctuaries.
You don't need any extra contracts," Kiyoshi replied, rolling his eyes as he lightly knocked on Anko's head. "If you want to continue training with me, then stick around."
Kurenai laughed softly, pulling out a scroll and handing it to Anko. This was a Fire Style scroll Kiyoshi had given her earlier.
Since Anko's chakra nature was limited to fire, she could focus her training on Fire Style jutsu exclusively.
Before Kiyoshi left the village, they had just enough time for her to train and perhaps explore learning other chakra natures and different jutsu.
…
Not long after, Kiyoshi finished healing Anko's injuries, and Kurenai sent out Shadow Clones to restore Anko's chakra before she began practicing nearby.
Anko also created two Shadow Clones to help memorize the Fire Style techniques on the scroll.
Kiyoshi wasn't playing favorites, he used the Spirit Transformation Jutsu, merging directly into Anko's body.
"Is this… the Spirit Transformation Jutsu?" In her mindscape, Anko's eyes widened as she stared at Kiyoshi in astonishment.
Being Orochimaru's disciple, she was more knowledgeable about certain advanced techniques than Kurenai.
She had heard of this S-ranked forbidden jutsu, but witnessing it firsthand was something else.
"Mhm, next I'll control your body, using medical ninjutsu to widen your chakra path and heal some of the hidden injuries within, improving your physical resilience."
"Really? Thank you so much, Kiyoshi." Anko's eyes lit up with joy.
She threw herself at him, her arms wrapped around him with an unrestrained glee, her eyes gleaming like crescents. "I knew you wouldn't forget your Nee-chan."
"Of course not." Kiyoshi began to respond, only to realize he had completely underestimated Anko's boldness.
The woman was far more daring than he had imagined, going so far as to steal a kiss, and... even push things further in her own unorthodox way.
