Chapter 260: Kakashi's 18th Birthday
Two days later, on September 15th, it was Kakashi's birthday.
Early that morning, Haneda arrived at Kakashi's house. With a quick flip, he climbed through the window.
The scent of grilled fish wafted through the air—Kakashi was cooking.
"Went fishing this morning, Kakashi?"
Hearing the familiar sound of someone entering, Kakashi paused mid-action with his chopsticks.
"Should I make an extra one for you?"
"No need. You know I already made breakfast for Naruto and the others this morning."
Haneda, who had been coming to Kakashi's house since childhood, casually opened the fridge. He pulled out a can of orange juice—Kakashi always kept it stocked for him, knowing it was his favorite.
Haneda popped the can open, grabbed a chair, and sat down, taking a sip of the chilled juice. "Got plans this morning? Training, or maybe a stroll around the village?"
"Let's take a walk. It's been a while since I've done anything other than train or eat with you."
Kakashi placed the grilled fish on the table and, out of habit, set out utensils for Haneda.
"Want some?"
Haneda, still drinking his juice, gave Kakashi a silent look of exasperation. Taking the hint, Kakashi shrugged and began eating on his own.
After finishing, Kakashi cleaned up, washing the dishes and his hands repeatedly at the sink.
Haneda stood behind him, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"Every time you're about to visit the memorial stone, you wash your hands over and over."
"Let's go. They're clean enough. At least try to enjoy your birthday today."
Kakashi silently turned off the faucet, and just like when Haneda used to drag him out for training, he followed him out of the house.
The streets of Konoha hadn't changed much, but the mood between the two was somber, likely because they were heading to pay respects.
On the way, they stopped by a flower shop to buy a few bouquets before arriving at the memorial stone, specifically the grave of Sakumo Hatake.
This time, it was Haneda who fell silent.
After a moment, he crouched down and placed the flowers in front of the grave.
"I personally killed Ōnoki, Uncle Sakumo.
"As for the other two… I'll handle them as well."
Kakashi quietly tidied the grave, pulling out the weeds. Seeing that Haneda hadn't stood up yet, he said, "Let's go. You've done enough. At least try to be happy on my birthday."
Haneda murmured an acknowledgment, standing up just as a leaf drifted in front of him.
Catching the leaf, Haneda whispered, "Where the leaves dance, fire will burn.
"The flames will continue to light the village, allowing new leaves to sprout.
"I'm already Hokage, the Fifth Hokage."
Lowering his hand from the hilt of his sword, Haneda followed Kakashi to the graves of Obito and Rin.
Unbeknownst to them, a single eye was watching from the shadows.
"The flowers were blown away again? How odd."
Kakashi noticed the flowers he had replaced last night scattered on the ground. None of the other graves were disturbed, just these two.
This wasn't the first time he'd seen this happen. Thinking it might be some kind of divine punishment, he didn't dwell on it, replacing the flowers for Rin and Obito once more.
Haneda placed his lilies down as well.
The two stood in silence for a while before leaving.
After they walked away, Obito emerged from hiding.
His outfit was unassuming—he wore a mask resembling a deity and a simple gray coat.
Standing before Rin's grave, he angrily tossed aside the flowers Kakashi had just replaced.
He glanced at the lilies Haneda had left, his gaze lingering for a moment before turning to follow the direction they had gone.
Guided intentionally by Haneda, the three of them—two ahead and one trailing behind—ended up at Konoha's largest bookstore.
Haneda pulled Kakashi toward the most prominent section of the store. Obito, blending into the crowd, gradually drew closer as well.
The store's most eye-catching display featured a massive poster:
"The Fifth Hokage Uchiha Haneda's new book, 13 years in the making, is here—My Struggle!
The shelves beside the poster were swarming with people—both shinobi and civilians—eagerly buying Haneda's book.
The influence of the Hokage in Konoha was evident in this moment.
Kakashi, taken aback by the scene, asked, "You already finished writing it, Haneda?!"
He clearly remembered Haneda still writing yesterday. How had it been released so quickly?
Haneda pulled out a collector's edition of My Struggle and handed it to Kakashi.
"Here's your birthday gift. Do you like it? It's a one-of-a-kind, personally signed collector's edition!"
Kakashi accepted the book and flipped it open, revealing a bookmark with an intricate design. Written in bold on it was the kanji for "Longevity" (寿).
Smiling faintly, Kakashi turned to the first page, where Haneda's personal signature was inscribed.
"The handwriting could use some work. Maybe practice a bit?"
"Tch! It's one of a kind, and you're already criticizing it? This book is going to sell worldwide, you know!"
Scanning the table of contents, Kakashi suddenly paused at the page listing childhood anecdotes. A sense of unease crept over him.
"Haneda, you didn't include those things, did you?"
"Of course I did. I guarantee this book will be banned in the Land of Fire, the Land of Rain, the Land of Water, and the Land of Waves!"
"I'm asking about those things! You know what I mean!"
"Oh, those things? Let me think… I may have included a little bit." Haneda held up a finger, smirking.
Kakashi sighed in relief, only to flip to the chapter about Fugaku's wedding and spot a mention of Icha Icha Paradise.
The murderous glare he shot at Haneda was impossible to miss.
Haneda tensed up. "What… what are you planning to do?"
"I'm going to kill you!"
As Kakashi lunged, Haneda activated the Flying Thunder God Technique and vanished. Kakashi pursued him without hesitation.
From behind a bookshelf, Obito emerged. Seeing the crowd scrambling for Haneda's book, he muttered in annoyance, "Damn it, why are there so many people?"
Just then, an elderly woman fell nearby. After a moment's hesitation, Obito helped her up.
"Let me assist you, ma'am."
"Thank you, young man."
After escorting her, Obito hurried back to the bookstore. Just before the books sold out, he managed to grab a collector's edition of My Struggle.
Opening to the same page Kakashi had, he saw the mention of Icha Icha Paradise and frowned.
"As expected, such a closet pervert…"
Muttering to himself, he read further, reaching the part where Kakashi had once tried to share Icha Icha Paradise with Haneda, only for Haneda to burn the book with fire. Satisfied, Obito closed the book with a smile.
Then, a realization struck him—Haneda and Kakashi had used the Flying Thunder God Technique!
Without activating his chakra sensing, it would be nearly impossible to track them. But if he activated it, Haneda would definitely detect him.
Where should he go next?
After some thought, Obito decided on a plan. Before leaving, he purchased a collector's edition of Icha Icha Paradise.
...
Around noon, at Yakiniku Q.
Haneda and Kakashi had reserved a private room and were seated across from each other.
Just as they were about to place their orders, a female server pointed at the ceiling and screamed.
"Accept my youthful challenge, Kakashi-san!"
Under the speechless gaze of Haneda and Kakashi, Gai leapt down from the ceiling.
Unbothered by the awkward entrance, Gai gave a thumbs-up to Haneda.
"Yosh! You're here too, Haneda!
"It's a pity you're Hokage now. I can't challenge you whenever I want anymore."
Without hesitation, Gai found a seat and joined them.
"No problem. Just challenge Kakashi instead," Haneda replied with a smile.
Hearing this, Kakashi's expression darkened further. "It's my birthday today, Gai. Can't the challenge wait until tomorrow?"
"What?! It's your birthday, Kakashi?"
Gai rummaged through his belongings, finding nothing to give. Desperate, he plucked a flower from the room's decoration and handed it to Kakashi.
"Happy birthday, Kakashi!"
Kakashi chuckled. "Though a bit insincere, I still appreciate it. Thanks, Gai."
As Gai and Kakashi chatted, Haneda had already ordered a grilled pork belly set with iced orange juice.
