Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Ice Cream and Bullies
The sun hung high in the sky, casting a warm glow over the streets of Konoha. School was over for the day, and I found myself trudging along the cobblestone paths, ice cream cone in hand. The delicious chocolate flavor was a small consolation for the outrageous bet I had lost to Yukino. I grumbled under my breath, the sweet treat doing little to lift my mood.
The streets were alive with the sounds and sights of everyday life. Vendors called out from their stalls, selling everything from fresh produce to hand crafted trinkets. Children dashed through the narrow alleyways, their laughter echoing off the walls of the quaint shops and homes that lined the streets. Above, vibrant banners fluttered in the breeze, adding splashes of color to the village's earthy tones.
"Honestly, I don't see why you're so upset," Yukino said, licking her strawberry ice cream with obvious satisfaction. Her eyes twinkled mischievously as she looked over at me. "You're just buying us ice cream cones. It's not the end of the world."
"Easy for you to say," I muttered. "You're the one who won the bet, and it's just day one of seven..."
Minato, walking beside us with a vanilla ice cream cone, chuckled. "You know, Shirokumo, you could look at it as a chance to improve your negotiation skills."
"I'd rather improve my chances of not being a walking ice cream vendor."
Yukino laughed, her rich, infectious laughter ringing out. "Aww, come on. You're making it sound like a huge sacrifice. It's just ice cream!"
I rolled my eyes, but couldn't help a small smile. "Yeah, well, you'll see how funny it is when you're the one buying."
Minato grinned, taking a large lick of his cone. "Maybe you should look at it this way: you're spreading the joy of ice cream. It's a public service."
"Public service, huh? More like public humiliation," I grumbled, shoving the cone into my mouth with a bit more force than necessary.
As we continued walking, I noticed Minato's gaze became distant. "Hey, I've got something to take care of," he said abruptly. "I'll catch up with you two later."
Before either Yukino or I could react, Minato vanished in a blur of yellow. My eyes widened in disbelief. The kid had disappeared in the blink of an eye.
"Did he just—" I started, but my voice trailed off. I glanced at Yukino, who looked equally stunned.
"No way…" I murmured, still staring at the spot where Minato had been standing. "When did he get so fast?"
Yukino shook her head, her own surprise evident. "That was insane. I didn't even see him move. Even the teachers aren't that quick."
"Yeah..."
I was left grappling with a mix of shock and awe. Minato's speed had always been impressive, but this? This was on another level entirely.
Yukino looked thoughtful for a moment, before mumbling under her nose. "The only one I know with similar speed is... My dad."
Hyūga Arashi. The current patriarch of the Hyūga family, father of the twins Hyūga Hiyashi and Hizashi, as well as father of Hyūga Yukino. She's their younger sister by six years. A real shocker when I first heard it. But knowing that now, and taking into account how strong her father ought to be to be the patriarch of the Hyūga clan... Minato's already quite up there at least in the speed department, even at the tender age of ten.
I guess that's the yellow flash for you.
How the heck do I catch up to that guy?
Future Shirokumo's problems...
We continued down the street in silence, both lost in our thoughts about Minato's sudden display of speed. It was clear that my good buddy ol' pal had been hiding more than a few surprises.
At least the ice cream was still cold, and the day still had its share of sweetness—even if I had to buy it all. We stopped in the park to take a break at one of the newer benches and I brought Yukino and myself a drink. My beloved orange juice, of course.
Am I a gentleman? No. She convinced me it fit into the bet.
I'm never betting with her again, I swear. She's gonna wring me out of all my money!
The sun dipped lower in the sky, casting long shadows across the park. Yukino and I were sprawled on one of the newer benches, each with a juice in hand. The cool liquid did little to cool the heat of the day, though.
Yukino took a sip, eyes twinkling with mischief. "You know, you really need to work on your negotiation skills. Next time, maybe don't bet on things you're not willing to follow through with."
I rolled my eyes, but couldn't suppress a chuckle. "Yeah, yeah. Next time I'll remember that."
She leaned back, stretching her legs. "I can't believe you got us drinks, though. That's actually quite gentlemanly of you."
"Don't get used to it," I said, raising my juice in mock toast. "It's a one-time deal. I've learned my lesson. No more bets with you."
"Smart choice," she said, smirking as she clanged her juice box against mine. "But I have to admit, it's been kind of fun watching you squirm."
Before I could respond, a familiar, unwelcome voice cut through the warm evening air. "Hey, Shirokumo!"
I turned, already bracing myself for trouble. It was the same group of bullies from earlier. The leader, Uchiha Shinichi with his snide grin and a disheveled appearance, stepped forward. His eyes were filled with a mix of malice and frustration.
Right. He'd just scored the lowest in the class—11 points, if I remembered correctly. That, and Kushina also beat him up. Is he here to cuss me out so he can vent?
"You're just the Hyūga princess' lackey, aren't you?" he taunted, his voice dripping with disdain. "And look at you now, playing the role of a good little servant. How's it feel to be a disgusting spider, crawling around for scraps?"
I clenched my jaw, trying to stay calm. I mean come on! Spider? Really? Can't come up with something more original? That's just part of my damn name, man!
"Seriously, just buzz off. I'm not in the mood for your nonsense." I waved him away.
He sneered, his anger bubbling over. "Buzz off? You think you can just brush me aside after what happened earlier?"
"Yeah, I do. You don't deserve my time or attention."
His friends laughed, but the sound was harsh and mocking, grating against my nerves. Shinichi stepped closer, his breath reeking of something sour. "You think you're better than us now, huh? Just because you hang out with the Hyūga girl? Cause you're friends with that prick, Namikaze Minato?"
Before I could react, he swung a punch, connecting squarely with my face and sending me tumbling to the ground. The sudden pain was sharp, and I staggered as I tried to get back on my feet, stunned. The taste of blood filled my mouth, metallic and bitter. My cheek throbbed, and I could feel the sting of tears welling up, more from the shock than the pain.
This was a first. Usually, these guys were all talk. Annoying as hell, but only ever talk. Occasionally they would shove me around, acting cocky, though it never reached an extreme. I could tolerate them before, I could avoid a confrontation. It wasn't a big deal.
But this time he had gone straight for a hit.
Yukino's eyes widened, and she leaped to her feet, stepping in front of me. "Hey! That's enough! You don't get to just punch Shiro like that! What has he done to you? You pig!"
The bullies erupted into laughter, their cruel amusement echoing around us. "Oh, look at that! Shirokumo needs his 'girlfriend' to protect him now. Maybe we should give her a beating too, huh?"
"Wha-What? What girlfriend?! You idiots!" Yukino stuttered out as she blushed.
The mockery hit me like a jolt of electricity. My face flushed with a mix of anger and embarrassment. A vein pulsed on my forehead as I stood up, pushing past Yukino.
"A beating? You really just said that? No. I've had enough of your stupid, pointless bullshit!"
My sudden confidence caught the bullies off guard, and they took a step back, their laughter faltering.
"What's the matter, Shirokumo?" Uchiha Shinichi taunted, trying to regain his composure. "What are you going to do about it?"
I looked at them, my anger burning. "I'm done with this. If you've got something to say, say it. Otherwise, just get lost."
They exchanged glances, their bravado slipping. Shinichi's smirk wavered, but he quickly masked it with a sneer. "Oh, really? What's the big talk for, huh? Think you're a big deal now?"
I took a deep breath, my eyes narrowing. "You know what? I'm not going to waste any more time with you. This will be over once and for all. Right here, right now."
The tension in the air was palpable as I stood before the group of bullies. My heart was pounding in my chest, a mixture of anger and adrenaline coursing through me. I could feel Yukino's worried gaze on my back, but I pushed her concern aside.
I took a deep breath, letting my anger channel into focus. Without breaking eye contact with the bullies, I reached down and began unfastening the straps on my wrists. The bullies laughed, their sneers full of mockery.
"Whoa, what's this?" Shinichi said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Is Shirokumo trying to shed a few kilograms before he fights us?"
I ignored him, concentrating on removing the heavy bands. As the first strap came loose, I let it fall to the ground. There was a loud crack as the wristband hit the cobblestones, the sound echoing through the park like a minor explosion. The bullies' laughter abruptly halted, their eyes widening in shock.
Shinichi's jaw dropped as he saw the cracked pavement where the wristband had fallen. "What the—"
Before he could finish, I quickly moved to remove the straps from my legs. Instead of unclipping them and pulling them off by hand, I used a swift kick to launch the heavy bands from my ankles. They flew through the air with surprising speed and accuracy, slamming into the two boys beside Shinichi. Both of them crashed to the ground, groaning in pain as the fifty-kilogram weights smashed into them.
His eyes were now as wide as saucers. Shinichi stumbled back, shock written all over his face. "What... what the hell?"
Feeling the newfound lightness in my movements, I moved with a speed that felt almost exhilarating. I circled around Shinichi, who had taken a fighting stance, his hands raised in a defensive posture. With a swift motion, I grabbed him by the head. He barely had time to react before I slammed his face into the dirt, the impact of his fall splattering him into the unfortunate location where a dog had left its brownish mark. Shinichi's muffled cries and the sound of him struggling filled the air. And so did the smell covering his face.
Yukino's eyes were wide with amazement as she watched the scene unfold. The bullies who had been laughing and jeering now looked on in stunned silence, their leader buried in the muck of humiliation.
I stood over him, breathing steady. The fight had ended as quickly as it had started. The bullies, realizing the severity of the situation, retreated with their bravado completely extinguished.
Uchiha Shinichi tried to push himself up, his face smeared with dirt and something far worse. "You... you'll pay for this... Just wait till my big brother hears!"
Glancing at him, my expression turned bitter. "I'm sure he'll laugh his ass off when he sees your brown face."
"Bastard...!"
"As for me? I'm done with you. Get out of here before I really lose my patience."
Shinichi, still dazed and humiliated, scrambled to his feet and hurriedly led his friends away, their retreating figures a mix of anger and embarrassment.
Yukino approached me cautiously, her eyes filled with a mix of admiration and concern. "Are you okay? Your face got…"
I nodded, wiping the sweat from my forehead. "Yeah. I'm fine. He didn't sock me that hard."
She offered a relieved smile. "That was incredible, Shiro! I didn't know you had it in you."
I shrugged, trying to downplay it. "Just felt it was about time I put them in their place. Been giving them the silent treatment too long, and they thought they could just walk over me."
To be honest, I was scared at that moment. My hands were still shaking even now. I hadn't really fought anyone besides Minato all this time, and he beat the crap out of me. I didn't know I'd reached the level where these fools turned to scrubs. I'm happy it got resolved so easily, honestly, otherwise it could've been messy.
Yukino's eyes softened, and she took a step closer, her voice low and sincere. "You've changed, Shiro. You're not just that weak, quiet kid that came to our class out of nowhere anymore, are you? I'm… Honestly impressed at how you've been training!" She stared at the weights on the ground, some of which had cracked the pavement.
Her words took me by surprise. I could see the genuine admiration in her eyes, a stark contrast to the way she usually teased me. It felt... good. Better than I expected.
As the park returned to its peaceful state, I looked around, feeling a sense of calm settling over me. The confrontation had been intense, but it had also been a turning point. I knew now that I shouldn't just let anyone push me around. Not anymore. I'd actually grown some backbone, finally!
After putting my weights back on, I sat on the bench again, Yukino following suit. She watched me quietly, as if waiting for me to say something. I took a deep breath, letting the adrenaline from the fight ebb away. "You know, Yuki, I've been training really hard. To the point of breaking my bones, tearing my muscles. I've even coughed blood from running on a few occasions these past few years. Sometimes, I wonder if it's all worth it."
Yukino placed a gentle hand on my arm. "It is worth it, Shiro. Today proved that. You stood up for yourself, and you showed those bullies that you're not someone to be messed with."
I looked at her, a small smile forming on my lips. "Thanks, Yuki. I guess... I guess I needed to hear that."
She smiled back, a warmth in her eyes that I hadn't noticed before. "You're welcome. I can tell you're quite hard on yourself, so just remember, you're not alone. You have friends who care about you."
Her words resonated with me, filling a void I hadn't realized was there. I stood up, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. "I know, all thanks to a certain someone who keeps bugging me."
That got a chuckle out of her.
As we left the park, the sun setting behind us, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. This victory, small as it was, had boosted my self-esteem. It made all the pain and effort in my training seem worthwhile. Today had been full of surprises, but for once, they were the kind I could handle.
