Chapter 53: Syrup Capture Field

After walking a few kilometers, Sasuke created a shadow clone and, along with Tekudo and the other two, continued slowly towards the base. The main body, meanwhile, went to the laboratory, picked up a large bottle of Poison No. 7, and rapidly advanced towards the military trading post. "Ku Enzo, I'm in a hurry, help me calculate the price," Sasuke said, going straight up to the second floor with the arrogance of a Sarutobi jonin. He took out a large bottle of poison and the four puppet trophies he had just confiscated.

"Two standard chunin puppets, well-preserved, and two high-quality ones customized by a special jonin, though severely damaged," Enzo murmured, surprised by the quality of the loot. 'Defeating another puppet team so soon... he must be on an assault team.'

Then, he took a small shield fragment and examined it. His face paled. He was deeply shocked. Such a smooth and delicate cut... not even a chakra blade could produce such an effect.

'What ninjutsu could have such terrifying cutting power?' he thought, his mind racing. 'Not even an A-rank ninjutsu... Could it be...? Water Style: Water Severing Wave!' The legendary S-rank forbidden technique fit perfectly. 'Hiss! My benefactor masters S-level secrets. He's a true Konoha master. A future Kage! I must cling to this super thigh.'

Sasuke was unaware of Enzo's thoughts. "Ku Enzo, how much is your water maltose?"

Water maltose was a type of starch syrup with a viscous and very strong texture. Sasuke wanted it for two reasons: he needed carbohydrates for his new diet, and he wanted to test if he could develop Water Style: Starch Syrup Capture Field, the jutsu he remembered seeing Kamizuki Izumo and Hagane Kotetsu use. It didn't seem like a difficult ninjutsu to develop, and with his improved chakra recovery, he had the perfect conditions. He could trap enemies in a sticky puddle, killing two birds with one stone.

"Sir, maltose is only 400 ryo a pound," Enzo replied respectfully.

"What? How can it be so expensive!" Sasuke exclaimed, though he knew prices at the front were high.

"Sir, we're at the front. Food prices have tripled. Sugar, which quickly replenishes energy, is a luxury," Enzo explained. "The price of maltose hasn't risen much. White sugar has gone up to 2,400 ryo a pound, and high-mountain honey has reached 4,000, and even then there's no stock."

"It's understandable that white sugar is expensive, but why honey too?" Sasuke asked. For a ninja, collecting honey shouldn't be that difficult.

After Enzo's explanation, he realized his mistake. In the ninja world, bees that fed on natural energy were much more dangerous than those from his previous life, more like venomous wasps. A swarm of tens of thousands was a problem even for a ninja. And some colonies, like those of the Kamizuru clan of Iwagakure, were practically summoning beasts. Collecting honey was, in fact, a difficult and dangerous job, which justified its high price.
