Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Final Begins
The final day arrived with cloudless skies — as though the heavens themselves were holding their breath.
Konoha was brimming with anticipation banners bearing the symbol of the village fluttered along the main roads, and excited murmurs echoed through the streets. Civilians and shinobi alike filled the stadium's vast stands, their eyes turned toward the arena below where the future of the next generation would be tested.
[Among the crowd sat shadows.]
The Land of Fire's daimyō was already seated on the highest dais, his ceremonial robes sweeping around him like a sunlit cloak. Beside him, his attendants whispered quietly. The seats reserved for the other guests of honor had filled quickly.
One stood out.
Cloaked in layered robes of blue and tan, the Kazekage of the Hidden Sand sat upright, his face hidden behind a veil of gold-threaded fabric. His presence was commanding, regal — and yet, none noticed how still he sat. Not even his chest moved with breath.
Only the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, who stood at the center of the stadium's announcement platform, cast a lingering glance at the Kazekage. He, too, sensed something... not quite right.
But now was not the time for suspicion.
A small gust of wind stirred Hiruzen's Hokage robes as he stepped forward. The stadium fell silent at once.
"People of the Five Great Nations, and honored guests — welcome to the final round of the Chūnin Selection Exams!"
His voice, magnified by chakra, carried to every corner of the arena.
"These young shinobi represent the future of our world. They have passed trials that tested their wit, endurance, and loyalty. Today, they stand before you — not just as candidates, but as warriors."
Applause thundered in response.
In the competitor'ss box just below the stands, the finalists stood in silence — each absorbed in their thoughts.
[A Glance Across the Arena]
Naruto, wearing his dark shiobi gear and a serious expression honed under Tsunade's discipline, scanned the crowd with calm eyes. Somewhere in the stands, he knew she was watching — maybe with Shizune by her side, maybe alone.
The Uchiha stood apart, arms crossed, eyes narrowed. The cursed seal still simmered just beneath the surface, barely restrained. His jealousy toward Naruto had curdled into something more — something darker. Yet for now, it was hidden behind his usual icy mask.
Shikako stood with hands in her sleeves, gaze tilted toward the upper platforms. Her mind, as always, was deep in thought — calculating odds, patterns, political presence. Her eyes brushed Naruto briefly, just for a second, and her face softened slightly. I hope he does okay ,she thought.
Nejire Hyūga, composed and focused, tied her hitai-ate tightly on forehead, her face unreadable. Her white eyes didn't seek her cousin in the stands. She looked only forward. The Main Branch — those responsible for her father's death — might never acknowledge her strength, but the world would.
Sai, expressionless as ever, held his scroll ready and watched the crowd with artist's detachment. No sentiment, no nerves. Only the brush, the ink, and what he would create.
Shino, calm behind his glasses, let his kikaichū hum beneath his skin, ready.
Kankurō of the Sand stood to one side, hunched with puppet scrolls sealed tightly.
Gaara, arms folded and eyes shut, said nothing — yet Naruto could feel the tension in the air around him, the chakra like a stormcloud waiting to split the sky.
Final Words Before Battle
Hiruzen raised his hand once more.
"These matches are not to the death. A match ends when one opponent is incapacitated, surrenders, or I — or the proctor — intervene. Show the world your strength."
[Exam Finals — Jonin Observation Stand]
The first light of morning filtered through the clouds over the vast arena, gilding the stone walls with soft golden edges. The crowd had begun to gather in rising waves, nobles and shinobi alike finding their seats. The tension in the air was undeniable — more than just excitement — it was the weight of diplomacy, expectation, and hidden intent.
Far above, nestled beneath the eaves of the arena's highest tier, a row of elite Jonin observed quietly from the shaded Jonin Stand. Their expressions were unreadable, but their eyes missed nothing.
Below, in the competitor's box, the chosen Genin finalists had already gathered.
The air inside the box felt like a drawn blade, sharp with silent rivalries and thoughts unspoken.
Up above, the Jonin had noticed.
"Quite the storm brewing in that box," Asuma Sarutobi murmured around the butt of his cigarette, watching the Genin quietly through the thick glass. His breath misted slightly in the morning chill.
"They've all grown," Kurenai Yuhi said, arms crossed. "Some more than others."
Beside her, Gai Maito gave a solemn nod. "They've entered the fire. What comes out now… will either be stronger or broken."
Kakashi Hatake, leaned against the wooden pillar behind them, didn't speak for a long moment. His visible eye was calm, but distant. Watching.
"Have you noticed," he finally said, "the Kazekage hasn't spoken a word to the Hokage in private? Not even a formal greeting."
Asuma's brow furrowed. "That's not normal. The Kazekage and Lord Third should've had a meeting already."
"He's in the VIP balcony," Kurenai noted, voice tight. "Right now. Sitting just one seat away from Lord Hiruzen."
Kakashi's tone grew quieter. "And yet, no exchange. No nod. Just... silence. Something's wrong."
Gai frowned, arms crossed. "We should alert the ANBU. Quietly."
"We already have," Kakashi said. "But they haven't detected anything — at least, not yet."
Asuma exhaled slowly. "What about Sasuke?"
Kakashi's gaze lingered on the Uchiha boy below. "He's been avoiding me. I know he's training in secret — and I suspect he's drawing power from the cursed seal. I can feel it even from here."
Kurenai shook her head. "That seal brings out what's hidden. Orochimaru meant for it to corrupt. It could tear him apart."
"It's not just Sasuke," Gai said, voice soft for once. "That entire generation is caught in something larger. Politics, power, destiny. This tournament is just the spark."
Kurenai's crimson eyes flicked to Naruto. "And Naruto?"
Kakashi paused. "Different. Not on my team. But I've been hearing things. Tsunade-sama's taken him in. He's sharper, quieter. There's a weight behind his eyes I've never seen before."
"Tsunade?" Asuma chuckled without humor. "Funny. The so-called 'dead last' is turning into the storm."
"He's changed," Kurenai agreed. "And not just in strength. In resolve."
"We may not survive what's coming," Kakashi said quietly. "But I have hope for the best for these kids."
The wind picked up.
