Chapter 39: Chapter 39: The Eye of Insight

After issuing the orders, Sakumo Hatake returned to the house.

"Don't take it personally. Captain Sakumo is always like that. He's got a good heart, truly warm, but he's just not great at expressing himself," Sarutobi Jūrō said, attempting to lighten the awkward atmosphere with a forced chuckle.

Jiraiya already knew that Sakumo wasn't a bad person.

If he were truly malicious, he wouldn't have taken his own life. Instead, he would have wielded the White Fang blade and cut down the comrades he had once saved.

Had Sakumo Hatake done that, there would have been very few in Konoha capable of stopping him. Unless the Third Hokage personally intervened, defeating Sakumo would undoubtedly come at a heavy price.

One could argue that Sakumo was a man deeply brainwashed by the Will of Fire. Otherwise, he wouldn't have abandoned a young Kakashi to commit suicide. Instead, he might have defected from Konoha and sought vengeance against the village.

"Our patrol mission is both incredibly simple and impossibly difficult," Sarutobi Jūrō explained.

"If we encounter no enemies, it's just a stroll in the woods. But the moment we face adversaries, we must be prepared to stake our lives in battle.

"This area borders the Land of Rain, far from the village. These herbs have been steadily maturing and are incredibly valuable resources. It's likely that certain ill-intentioned individuals will target them.

"Our primary duty is to ensure the safety of these herbs until the villagers finish harvesting them and transport them back to the village.

"That's why patrolling is non-negotiable. We must remain vigilant against any enemy intrusions. Our designated patrol area is along the border with the Land of Rain."

"I'll now guide you through our assigned patrol zone," Sarutobi Jūrō said to Jiraiya and the others.

They nodded in agreement and followed him to the border.

Before long, they became familiar with the area they were responsible for patrolling.

"During patrols, you must never cross the border," Sarutobi Jūrō said with a stern expression.

"Crossing the border could provoke a war between two nations, with disastrous consequences. Remember that well."

"As ninja, we are effectively the military of our nation. Entering foreign territory without authorization is a provocation and could easily escalate into war, especially with nations that won't tolerate such actions."

"Of course, entering another nation through official channels is a different matter."

"Jiraiya, Tsunade, you two can rest now. I'll take Orochimaru on the first patrol," Jūrō instructed.

"One day, I'll knock Sakumo flat on his back," Tsunade declared, punching the air as soon as Jūrō was out of earshot.

It was clear she was still upset about Sakumo's attitude toward them.

To be honest, pinning Sakumo to the ground would be no easy feat for Tsunade.

"Jiraiya, the view over there looks nice. Come with me to check it out," Tsunade said, pointing to a distant spot after venting her frustration.

Jiraiya nodded. Sarutobi Jūrō and Orochimaru had just started their patrol, and it would take them a while to complete their route.

Though their patrol area wasn't vast, they needed to traverse it repeatedly to ensure thorough coverage.

Tsunade tugged Jiraiya along toward the direction she had pointed out.

Soon, they arrived at a field of flowers, vibrant with life and teeming with butterflies.

"This place is so much prettier than the village," Tsunade said happily, her eyes sparkling as she chased after the butterflies.

"It is beautiful," Jiraiya agreed, lying down on the grass and watching her with a smile.

"Isamu said there's a high chance of war breaking out here. If that happens, these beautiful sights may not survive the destruction," Tsunade said, her voice tinged with melancholy as she gently lifted a butterfly with her finger.

Senju Isamu, the grandson of Senju Kawarama. His strength was second only to Sakumo Hatake's. A master of Water Release, he was said to have inherited the Second Hokage's talents.

Unfortunately, during the Second Great Ninja War, he perished under the siege of Iwagakure forces.

"Then we must grow stronger to protect everything we find beautiful," Jiraiya said with determination.

"You're right, Jiraiya. We'll grow stronger together and safeguard what's dear to us," Tsunade said, nodding as she released the butterfly back into the air.

"Jiraiya, there's a lake ahead. I'd like to take a bath. Keep watch and make sure no one approaches," Tsunade said suddenly.

After days of traveling, she was eager to freshen up, having worked up a sweat along the way.

"And what if I decide to peek?" Jiraiya asked with a mischievous grin as he sat up.

"If you dare peek, I'll break your third leg, and then you'll truly have no choice but to only look," Tsunade retorted, shaking her fist in warning before heading toward the lake.

'Getting closer to my little goal,' Jiraiya thought to himself with glee. Tsunade's trust and affection for him had been steadily growing, and he wasn't about to mess that up.

Despite his lecherous nature, Jiraiya had his principles. He wouldn't stoop to being sleazy. Lust and depravity were two very different things.

"System, extract the rewards from the past few days," Jiraiya said internally as soon as Tsunade was out of sight.

The rewards he had accumulated during their travels were still stored in the system's space. Among them was a seven-day reward that he was particularly excited about:

An S-rank detection jutsu called Eye of Insight.

When activated, the Eye of Insight allowed the user to perceive chakra flows within a five-kilometer radius and even see an enemy's chakra network.

Similar to the Byakugan in some ways, its detection abilities were exceptional. However, it also had a unique advantage: immunity to any genjutsu below S-rank—a feat the Byakugan could not achieve.

Every seven-day reward from the system was incredibly valuable, significantly boosting Jiraiya's strength.

Paired with his Sage Body's sensory abilities, the Eye of Insight made it nearly impossible for any jutsu to escape his notice.

As for the daily rewards, they were mostly common ninjutsu and less noteworthy.

Jiraiya wondered if the Eye of Insight would someday be passed on to his descendants, forming a new kekkei genkai.

"Ding! Extraction complete," the system chimed.

In an instant, Jiraiya had mastered several new jutsu.

"Should I test the Eye of Insight's capabilities?" Jiraiya mused, glancing toward the lake where Tsunade had gone.

But he quickly shook his head. He was a disciplined ninja and wouldn't misuse his abilities inappropriately.

"Ahh!"

Suddenly, a scream echoed from the direction of the lake.
