Chapter 39: Chapter 39 Performance Time
Just how terrifying was Konoha's White Fang? Gekko Chizan finally understood.
Utterly enraged, the White Fang in his hand had completely transformed into the scythe of a death god.
His whole body was wrapped in lightning chakra, and this use of chakra reminded Gekko Chizan of the Third and Fourth Raikage.
Although White Fang's lightning-infused body wasn't as fearsome as theirs, it still massively stimulated his own physical capabilities.
Even when surrounded by dozens of enemies, that white figure darted through the crowd at incredible Speed.
Whether it was shuriken, explosive tags, or Ninjutsu hurled his way, all were cut down with a single slash.
The Hatake sword style had no flair—only swift, decisive killing blows!
"Don't let his speed throw you off! Spread out and use wide-range ninjutsu!"
Chiyo, the one who knew White Fang best on the battlefield, gave the order immediately.
The Sunagakure ninja instantly scattered outward.
A barrage of various Ninjutsu came raining down on White Fang.
"Fire Style! Fireball Jutsu!"
"Wind Style! Wind Cutter Jutsu!"
"Wind Style! Wind Dust Jutsu!"
"Wind Style! Great Breakthrough!"
Most of the ninjutsu consisted of Wind and Fire Styles—both highly lethal elements.
What's more, Wind Style could enhance Fire Style.
In an instant, roaring flames engulfed the area where White Fang stood.
"Damn it, I'm going to help!"
Tsuchi, ignoring his injuries, was about to charge into battle.
But Gekko Chizan reacted quickly and grabbed him.
"You'll just get in the way!"
"Sakumo-sama alone can kill a few and break through!"
"If you go in, he'll have to split his focus to protect you!"
"Then none of us will make it out alive!"
Hearing Gekko Chizan's scolding, Tsuchi's rage slowly simmered down, and helplessness spread across his face.
"Damn it!"
Gekko Chizan ignored his angry curses.
Instead, he focused more intently on the battlefield.
Faced with the overwhelming flames, Hatake Sakumo showed no fear.
"Hatake Sword Style!"
A plain name, a plain move.
Just a single, straightforward cut.
But when that blade was wielded by Hatake Sakumo, it became something entirely different.
The ninja blade, White Fang, glowed with a blinding light—the sign of chakra pushed to its limit.
With one swing, the fire vanished, and the roaring wind was stilled.
From a vertical strike to a sweeping horizontal slash.
This strike carried absolute power, as if it would cleave everything before it in two.
"Everyone, get behind my puppets!"
"That attack is not something you can block!"
Chiyo pressed her palms together, and ten puppets instantly spread their arms wide.
"Puppet Art: Chakra Shield!"
In a flash, ten glowing blue shields appeared.
The Sunagakure ninja quickly took cover behind the puppets.
As the slash came down—
A terrifying shockwave slammed into the shields.
Chiyo trembled all over, gritting her teeth and pouring chakra into her defense.
"Hmph!"
Seeing his second strike blocked, Hatake Sakumo was visibly annoyed.
Just as he was about to draw his third sword strike, a voice echoed in his mind—
"Stop fighting! Take this chance and run!"
It was Gekko Chizan's voice—clearly transmitted through Yamanaka Heichi's Mind Body Transmission Technique.
Recalling Gekko Chizan's earlier plan, Hatake Sakumo bit down hard.
He stared at the Sunagakure ninja with great reluctance.
He wanted so badly to take them down!
But he couldn't—for the sake of escaping with his team, he had to suppress the urge to fight.
Suddenly, he turned and sprinted toward the direction of Konoha.
All his chakra surged into his legs, and Hatake Sakumo shot forward like a rocket.
"All right, Sakumo-sama is gone."
"Now we just wait for him to get far enough, then I'll activate Flying Thunder God and take you all with me."
Watching Sakumo leave, Gekko Chizan let out a breath of relief.
He'd really been afraid Sakumo would lose control.
"Damn that Konoha White Fang! He actually ran!"
"Bastard! Bastard!"
Chiyo had just released her defensive stance when she realized Hatake Sakumo had fled.
Her fury was almost palpable.
"Everyone, charge in and kill the rest! Get Pakura back!"
Chiyo knew full well that none of them could catch the fleeing White Fang at full speed.
All they could do was finish the mission at hand.
But right at that moment, a figure slowly emerged from the ruins.
In his arms was none other than Sunagakure's elite jōnin—Pakura.
"Whoa whoa whoa, don't get reckless. The person you want is right here in my hands."
"Don't come any closer, or I'll act."
Gekko Chizan pressed a kunai to Pakura's neck, ready to take her down with him at the slightest move.
He hadn't planned on showing himself, but to buy time for the others, he made the choice.
"Hmph! Konoha brat! Release Pakura, and I might let you live!"
"Hatake Sakumo already abandoned you and ran! There's no need to die for a guy like him!"
Chiyo raised a hand to stop her subordinates. In her view, these Konoha ninja were already prey on the plate—there was no way they'd escape.
Rather than kill them, she might as well extract intel from Konoha.
"You're right! Hatake Sakumo actually abandoned us and ran off!"
"Someone like that, I want nothing to do with!"
Master actor Gekko Chizan entered the stage—his performance was flawless.
His face was twisted in grief, hands trembling, every inch of him radiated righteous anger toward Hatake Sakumo.
"My lady, now that it's come to this, will Sunagakure accept us?"
"We've been cast aside—rather than let Konoha discard me, I'd rather join Sunagakure!"
"And then we'll make them pay!"
Gekko Chizan shouted with emotion.
Everyone around him froze.
Even Chiyo was momentarily stunned—was this kid really a ninja?
How could someone defect right on the battlefield?
"What the hell are you saying?!"
Even Tsuchi and the others behind him were taken in, yelling at him in outrage.
But that only made Chiyo relax.
The kid was just a teenager—it was only natural he didn't want to die.
"Hmph! You call yourself a Konoha ninja, yet you have no backbone!"
"You disgrace the Hokage line!"
Chiyo sneered at Gekko Chizan's behavior.
She was proud and strong-willed, and she had no tolerance for cowards.
Not only had she failed to kill the White Fang today, but she'd also run into this sniveling little traitor—it was infuriating.
"Hey hey hey! That's not fair."
"I'm not disgracing the Hokage—I bought us a whole lot of time, didn't I?"
"Don't you think so, Chiyo-sama?"
Gekko Chizan suddenly shifted his tone—from grief-stricken to gleeful and mocking.
He had felt it.
Hatake Sakumo had stopped.
Now it was his time to perform!
