Chapter 472: Chapter 472: Jiraiya Squad 2

One month later.

Uchiha Mirai arrived at Amegakure with Konan.

This was where Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan had once lived. But now, it had been transformed into a district of luxurious single-family villas.

The roads were wide, birds chirped in the trees, and the area was filled with blooming flowers and modern amenities.

It was nothing like the gloomy, rain-soaked village of the past.

At the far end of the villa district stood a modest wooden cabin that seemed oddly out of place.

A wooden fence encircled the area for several hundred meters. Unlike the paved roads outside, the ground here was earthen and overgrown with grass.

"We're here."

Konan gazed at the familiar cabin, her eyes reflecting a trace of nostalgia.

Amegakure now fell under the jurisdiction of Konohagakure, and when the area had been rebuilt, Namikaze Minato had deliberately preserved this particular spot.

The two of them stepped up to the cabin and knocked on the door, but there was no response.

Mirai and Konan exchanged a glance before pushing the door open and walking inside.

The interior was simple—just a few chairs, a table, and two wooden beds.

"That's weird. Why are there two beds?" Mirai muttered, frowning. Then he noticed Konan standing silently by a small wooden shelf against the wall.

He walked over and saw four square wooden plaques arranged neatly on the shelf.

Each plaque had a comical engraving of a green frog. Beneath them, names were carved from left to right: Jiraiya, Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan.

Konan gently brushed her fingers over the plaque above her name, then slowly flipped it over.

On the back, the frog was gone—replaced by a splash of red.

"When the three of us were taken in by Jiraiya-sensei, this is where he taught us ninjutsu," Konan said softly.

"During our reconnaissance and counter-reconnaissance training, he made these four wooden tags."

"They each have two sides—one with a green frog and one with a red back."

"The frog means 'out on a mission.' Red means 'returned home.'"

"If a plaque is red but the person isn't in the room... it means something happened to them."

Her explanation wasn't really for Mirai. It was more like she was reminiscing aloud, speaking to the past.

...

Just then, footsteps sounded outside.

Creaaak— The wooden door opened, and two figures stepped in.

"Mirai-sama? Konan?" Nagato looked surprised.

They hadn't told him they were coming, so he hadn't expected their visit.

Mirai's mouth twitched slightly.

Standing beside Nagato... was a familiar puppet.

Yahiko.

So that explained the second bed. Mirai had been wondering why Nagato, living alone, would need two.

Then again, thinking about it, this arrangement suited Nagato's personality.

Konan's expression grew hazy the moment she saw Nagato and Yahiko. Memories of those long-ago days—when they'd depended on each other to survive—flooded her mind.

"Mirai-sama, Konan, you should've told me you were coming. I could've prepared something." Nagato chuckled as he and Yahiko walked over and flipped their plaques to red.

Then, looking a little sheepish, he added,

"Back then, Yahiko dreamed of bringing real peace to the shinobi world. When he died, I swore I'd show him that peace with my own eyes."

"And... living alone was just too lonely. So I decided to live with him—like this."

Seeing Nagato talk so openly, Mirai couldn't help but feel moved.

Looks like his decision back then was the right one.

Not only was Nagato talking more these days, he even had a smile on his face again.

Life seemed to be treating him well.

...

"Oh, right!" Nagato exclaimed after seating Yahiko's puppet, slapping his forehead.

"Konan, Jiraiya-sensei came here recently!"

Konan's eyes widened. "What? You saw him?"

Nagato shook his head.

"Not exactly. But a little over a month ago, when I came back, I noticed his plaque had been flipped to red."

"Only we know what those plaques mean. So it had to be him."

A smile broke across Konan's face.

So Jiraiya-sensei hadn't forgotten them after all.

Just like they hadn't forgotten him.

But...

Was Jiraiya-sensei still alive?

If possible, she truly wished they could go on one more mission—together—as the "Jiraiya Squad."

Mirai, quietly watching as Konan and Nagato reminisced, finally spoke up.

"Nagato, Konan... would you two like to talk with Yahiko?"

"Huh?!"

They blinked, stunned.

"Mirai, what do you mean?"

Mirai smiled. "Exactly what I said."

Then, with a silent thought, he formed the seals.

"Edo Tensei!"

A cloud of smoke billowed, and Yahiko's real body emerged from the reanimation.

"...Nagato? Konan?"

"Uchiha Mirai?!"

"Wait, this is our old house... but didn't I die?"

Yahiko looked around in confusion.

Nagato stepped forward, his voice full of emotion.

"Yahiko! Our dream came true!"

"What dream?"

"Peace in the shinobi world!"

"Huh?!"

As Yahiko stared in shock, Nagato and Konan began recounting everything that had happened since his death.

They talked deep into the night—about the unification of the shinobi world, the founding of the Divine Nation, Black Zetsu's plot to revive his mother, the Otsutsuki Clan...

It sounded like something out of a fairy tale.

"Yahiko," Konan said gently, "let Mirai use genjutsu. See it with your own eyes."

She looked to Mirai, who nodded.

In an instant, Yahiko's mind was plunged into a genjutsu, where he watched the events of the past few years unfold like a movie.

When he came back to himself, tears streamed silently down his face.

For a man who had dreamed of peace, seeing that dream realized with his own eyes...

There was no greater joy.

...

They talked the whole night.

It had been so long since the three of them were together—they had too much to say.

By the time the sun rose, Yahiko's excitement had finally started to fade.

Konan spoke up. "Yahiko, would you like to live with Nagato in this new world?"

"If you want, I'm sure Mirai would agree to bring you back."

Yahiko laughed heartily.

"No need. I've already died once. Just being able to see this dream come true is more than enough."

"Konan, live happily with Mirai, okay? You suffered so much when we were kids. Now it's time to enjoy life."

"As for Nagato..." He glanced at the puppet body, smiling. "Let my body stay with you. Don't feel any burden."

"Come on, let's go see the new shinobi world."

"Yeah!"

Nagato nodded firmly, then led Yahiko toward the door.

Konan watched them walk away, a gentle smile blooming on her face.

"Thank you, my love."

"Dummy. What's with the formal tone? Hurry up and catch up to them—they're getting ahead of us."
