Chapter 199: Chapter 199: On the Eve of Succession
Konohagakure.
The streets were adorned with vibrant decorations, and banners hung across every alleyway and avenue. Faces brimmed with happiness as the villagers prepared for the momentous occasion.
Although dawn had just broken, leaving a dense winter fog lingering over the ground, countless people were already making their way toward the Hokage Building. The streets were packed shoulder to shoulder, bustling with excitement.
"Hurry up! If we're any later, we'll end up at the back of the line!"
"Damn it, why is everyone up so early? I should've camped out last night to save a spot."
"Hahaha! Isn't it obvious? Today is Lord Mirai's succession ceremony as the Hokage. Who would want to miss this?"
Amidst the chatter, figures occasionally darted across the rooftops, vanishing in the blink of an eye. The onlookers below gazed up with envy, marveling at the effortless grace of the shinobi.
"It must be amazing to be a ninja," someone murmured, their voice tinged with admiration.
"Especially now that ninja are likely to surpass even the nobles in status."
"Kakashi, hurry up!"
"Yeah, yeah." Kakashi didn't even glance up from the book he was engrossed in. "I heard you the first time, Rin."
Rin rolled her eyes in exasperation at his nonchalant attitude. Yūhi Kurenai chuckled, offering reassurance.
"Don't worry, Rin. Mirai promised to save us spots. We're VIPs, after all."
Hearing this, Ebisu perked up and whispered something to Shiranui Genma, who then asked with a grin, "Kurenai, what exactly do you mean by 'VIPs'?"
Kurenai smirked and replied smugly, "People with connections are VIPs." She then turned her attention to Mitarashi Anko, who appeared unusually glum. "Anko, you don't look too happy. What's wrong?"
Anko pouted. "That jerk assigned me to Orochimaru's lab as an assistant."
"Isn't that a good thing?" Kurenai asked, puzzled. "Orochimaru was your teacher, wasn't he?"
Anko scoffed. "We've got nothing to do with each other anymore. I'd rather be part of Mirai's personal guard."
Rin teased with a knowing grin, "Anko, you keep calling him a jerk, but deep down, you wouldn't mind being 'jerked around' by Mirai, would you?"
Anko's face turned beet red. "Who—Who wants that?! Stop making stuff up, Rin!"
Rin pointed at the bone blade hanging at Anko's waist.
"Then why did you beg Mirai for a blade?"
"I just didn't want my fighting style to be so one-dimensional!" Anko snapped, stomping her foot.
Rin chuckled and added playfully, "Careful, Anko. Pride comes before a fall."
Their banter was interrupted by two green-clad figures bursting onto the scene, drenched in sweat.
"Why is everyone so relaxed?" Might Guy demanded. "Even on the day of Mirai's Hokage succession, we mustn't slack off! Youth waits for no one!"
He turned to Kakashi, challenging him. "Kakashi, face me in battle!"
Before anyone could respond, Guy's father, Might Duy, chimed in. "Mirai is becoming Hokage! As his peers, you should all strive harder!" Tears streamed down his face as he continued, "Just thinking about it sets my soul ablaze!"
The group watched Duy's antics with bemusement, struggling to imagine how Mirai had ever trained alongside someone so… exuberant.
...
The Uchiha Compound.
Mikoto and Konan stood in front of a mirror, their elegant makeup perfectly applied. Next to them, Kurama Yakumo gazed at them with envy, eager to grow up and exude the same charm.
"Let's go," Mikoto said softly, and the three of them stepped outside. The scene that greeted them left them momentarily stunned.
The Uchiha Compound was in complete chaos. Clan members donned traditional high-collared robes emblazoned with the Uchiha fan symbol and carried bouquets of fresh flowers. Their laughter echoed through the streets.
"After all these years, we finally have an Uchiha Hokage!"
"Lord Mirai has fulfilled our greatest dream. It's incredible."
"Ha! Today, even the wind feels jubilant!"
For decades, the Uchiha had endured criticism and doubt.
"If you're so great, why haven't you produced a single Hokage?" they were asked. "You boast about the Sharingan being the ultimate kekkei genkai, but where are your strong warriors since Uchiha Madara?"
Mirai's ascension had silenced all naysayers. He had proven the Uchiha's unparalleled strength, eliminated the corrupt Sarutobi Hiruzen and Shimura Danzō, and elevated the clan to the pinnacle of power in the ninja world. Even the Hyūga Clan had conceded defeat.
Today belonged to the Uchiha.
...
Inside a tailor shop in Konoha.
An elderly woman with snowy white hair and thick glasses painstakingly sewed the final stitches on a ceremonial robe. Several young assistants stood nearby, watching in silence.
The door slammed open, and Uzumaki Kushina stormed in, her red hair billowing.
"Hey! The ceremony's about to start, and the Hokage's robe isn't ready yet?"
One of the assistants stammered nervously, "Lady Kushina, she insists on doing it herself… We couldn't stop her."
The old woman glanced at Kushina, unhurried. "From the First Hokage to the Third, I've sewn every Hokage robe by hand. This is the one thing I won't compromise on."
Kushina's chakra flared, her hair whipping around as if caught in a storm.
"I don't care about your traditions. If I don't have that robe in thirty minutes, I'll tear this place down!"
