Chapter 13: Chapter 13: The Last Mission.
-You are a good man, strong, agile, discreet, pious, and capable. Maybe now you do not understand everything that is happening, but the answers will soon come. I also want to tell you that the blessing I gave you is not a free blessing, I need you for a somewhat dangerous mission. -
Ryan looked at her cautiously.
-What do you want me to do? -
-In a few years, in that world, a man with unimaginable power will appear. A war will begin, and with this war will come two young men destined to stop this man. - The woman came closer, her eyes shining with intensity. "But before that happens, there are enemies that must be eliminated. They will be obstacles in the future... and you must deal with them, if you don't, humanity will be locked in an eternal sleep where their lives will be consumed little by little. -
Ryan felt pressure in his chest.
-How much time do I have? -
-As much time as you need before the war begins. But if you eliminate them quickly, you will be able to enjoy your new life without worries. But in the worst case, you will have to be ready to join this great war and fight in the shadows. - The woman extended her hand. - What do you say, Ryan? Do you accept? -
Ryan looked at the hand of the goddess... He thought about his old life. If he accepted, he would be used again as he was before, but this time, he could live freely and not be locked up, controlling his life with only one condition in his way.
Ryan thought about accepting without hesitation, but remembered the betrayal, the misery.
- What assures me that you will not betray me - said Ryan in a friendly tone
- I understand how you feel, but let me explain, I am a goddess, although I wish to intervene in your life I do not have the power beyond what I do in this place, that is why I brought you here first, to talk to you and help you with my blessings, otherwise the fate of this world would be tinged with darkness. - said the beautiful woman.
- because you are so worried about that world -
- the collapse of a world of your dimension of another could bring an imbalance in the universe or even in the galaxy if not controlled in time, that's why I need the help of someone who can interact in that world, I do not intend to hurt you, as I said you are free to do what you please as long as you fulfill your part of the deal -
- And if I do not accept? - Ryan asked suspiciously.
- There would be no consequences for you; my blessing would no longer be there to help you, and you will live peacefully at least until the war breaks out and you are caught in it. You will not remember anything of your past life; it will be new experiences in this new world. -
- So if or if the war happens -
- It is an important event in this world, but the end is desolate, the world falls into darkness, and there is nothing that can save it. We only depend on you and other humans that I put in your way to help you, so you will not be alone. -
Ryan thought about the possibility of living free, he gritted his teeth being aware that if he has the opportunity to live well and quiet, in his plans was not to lose everything by the war that was going to occur and that would destroy everything, even what he managed to build ... So he looked at the goddess with determination.
-If there is no other option, I accept. -
In that instant... A blinding light enveloped him. Paradise disappeared. The voice of the goddess was the last thing he heard before he lost consciousness:
-So, Ryan...wake up.-
The dampness of the grass, Cold and sticky, something familiar. Ryan opened his eyes with difficulty. Everything was a blur. The sky... no, there was no sky. Just a thick gray that enveloped him. He felt the wet grass beneath his fingers, the metallic smell of blood...his blood. The same feeling as when he died.
Am I... here again? he thought, his chest tightening.
Voices... distant voices heard in the pouring rain. Fuzzy silhouettes, like ill-defined shadows approaching, one... taller than the rest. Slender. Slow, meandering.
Eyes... no. Were they eyes? Two golden slits, glowing like dull coals. A smile. It didn't speak.
Then... the world broke into light, A heartbeat. Then another. And the dry rustle of her breath caught in a plastic mask.
Ryan sat up with a jolt. There was no more grass. No sky, just cold and steel.
He was naked on a lab table, connected to tubes dripping viscous fluids. His body... covered in wet bandages and metal plates. The air was heavy with chemicals, and a flickering light illuminated the room like an eternal interrogation cell.
All around them, vials. Papers scribbled with impossible formulas.
And tanks, Glass cylinders that housed deformed bodies, some human... others, barely. One had claws. Another had no skin. All were... still.
Ryan felt nauseous.
-What the hell is this... where am I...? Am I...?"- thought Ryan
Footsteps were heard AND a creaking door opening, voices... fuzzy, like memories trapped in a broken dream.
-The cells react... but the body rejects it. -
-What if we force a combination with elemental chakra? -What if we force a combination with elemental chakra? -
-He's an interesting... subject. He survived the adaptation. That's unusual. -
Ryan yelled, but no sound came out. A fuzzy memory. Voices above him, like vultures. Needles, scalpels, and bone fragments were inserted into his back.
The door opened again. And this time... something came in.
It wasn't a shadow. It was real. A slender figure, skin as white as lime or death. His eyes... they snaked. Golden, elongated, fixed. A long tongue brushed his own lips. He dressed like a doctor, but radiated something older. Darker.
He didn't say his name. He didn't have to. He didn't know him, but Ryan knew this man wasn't a savior. He was an architect of monsters.
-Oh... so you've opened your eyes," the figure murmured in a soft, almost motherly, but hollow voice.
Ryan tried to speak, but only managed to cough. His throat burned. The stranger approached him, leaning his face to get a better look at him, like someone evaluating a wounded animal.
-You woke up earlier than expected. How fascinating... Your cells... are responding. Very good.
Ryan gritted his teeth.
-Who... are you?
A smile was all that came across his face before he uttered a few words.
-Let's say I'm the one who gave you a second chance. -
-------------------------
Ryan awoke with a jolt, his breath hitching, his heart pounding in his chest.
The roof of the chariot was the first thing he saw. There were no celestial lights. There were no goddesses with crowns of light. He was not in that cold laboratory.
-Ryan? -A soft voice brought him out of his thoughts.
Lia was looking at him with concern, her small face illuminated by the dim light of dawn.
Ryan didn't answer right away. What he had seen was not something he remembered before; he knew better than anyone that this dream was not just a dream, it was a memory. Now he understood.
This world... it wasn't his. No matter how many answers he sought about his old world, he would never go back to it... But did he really want to go back?
Ryan looked at his hands and then at his own body. The wounds from the fighting of the last few days... some were already gone.
Instinctively, he ran a hand down his back. The tubes that had once been embedded in his flesh in that lab no longer left any trace.
He sat up slowly and looked at the merchant.
-Nobu... do you have a mirror? -
. The merchant, surprised, took out a small hand mirror from a bag and handed it to him.
Ryan looked at his reflection. It was himself... although with certain changes.
He looked younger, perhaps 4 or 5 years younger than when he died.
His body, though strong, seemed even more resilient than before.
But the most disturbing thing... It was his new ability with blood. Ryan knew that, although it seemed like an advantage now, that ability could become a curse. The goddess had already warned him.
He sighed, putting the mirror aside. He didn't know whether to feel happy or frustrated. He was free, yes...But he was still doomed to fight.
