Renjiro had just finished preparing for his daily training when a Konoha shinobi suddenly stopped him as he was about to leave the camp.

"You have a mission." The shinobi said, leading him toward the camp's command building.

Renjiro blinked in surprise, completely confused as he thought in himself: "A mission? Without going through Captain Zeri?"

He instantly realized what was going on. Being summoned alone could only mean one thing—this wasn't a squad assignment, it was a solo assignment.

As a shinobi, Renjiro didn't have the right to refuse mission arrangements, especially during wartime. Though puzzled, he still followed obediently.

They arrived at a modest two-story wooden structure that served as the temporary command center of the camp. The shinobi stopped outside one of the interior rooms and motioned toward the door.

"You're not going in?" Renjiro asked curiously.

"You go alone from here." After saying that, the shinobi turned and walked away.

Renjiro wasn't surprised. Missions involving sensitive intelligence were often handled with strict confidentiality. The shinobi who brought him wasn't part of the operation, so he didn't have the right to listen—standard procedure.

Knock!

"Ahh." Renjiro took a steadying breath, knocked once, then pushed open the door and entered.

When Renjiro entered the room, he was slightly stunned—it was pitch black. Not a single light, not even a glimmer. The kind of darkness that swallowed sound. Renjiro couldn't even see his hand in front of him.

"Takane Renjiro?" A deep, echoing voice rang out. The voice seemed ethereal, and it was impossible to tell where it came from.

"Spooky theatrics…" Renjiro said in his heart.

He curled his lip slightly but kept his face neutral as he answered politely: "Yes."

"You, Takane Renjiro, born in Konoha, Year 33. Father: Takane Kaito, a Genin, deceased in Year 39 during battle against Sunagakure. Mother: Hatsuhana Rin, also a Genin, same fate, same battle. Yourself: Genin, graduated Year 46, currently stationed on the Water Country frontlines. Academic record: mediocre. Battlefield performance: impressive. In the recent bridge demolition mission, your actions saved dozens of shinobi and resulted in a standoff with the Mist's assassination specialist, Momochi Zabuza. Based on reports, this was attributed to an exceptional perception ability—likely inherited from your mother."

Renjiro blinked in confusion. They had done their investigation pretty well—too bad their conclusions were off.

His edge wasn't sensory perception. It was his unique ability to accelerate his thinking speed, allowing him to simulate and calculate reactions at a speed about a forty times faster than normal. This gave him enough time to observe and come up with countermeasures.

His ability was merely a part of Arkain's advanced functions, and it had nothing to do with sensory perception.

However, Renjiro had no intention of correcting them. Let them misunderstand—better that than letting them know the truth. Otherwise, his end wouldn't be on the battlefield, but in some dark secret lab like Danzo's or Orochimaru's.

After a brief silence, the voice rang out again: "Renjiro, due to your remarkable 'perception ability,' you are being considered for an important mission. But before that… we need to test you."

Renjiro nodded without hesitation. In fact, he didn't care much—he knew he had no choice in the matter anyway.

"Begin the test!"

Whoosh! Whoosh!

As the owner of the mysterious voice finished speaking, a storm of shuriken suddenly flew around him—not aimed directly at him, but swirling chaotically through the air. Dozens, maybe hundreds of them. The metallic sound of their spinning filled the room.

Half a minute passed, then the voice called out again: "How many shuriken are currently in the air? You have three seconds to answer."

"Wait, what?!" Renjiro stammered. The test was sudden—and weird.

"Three... two…"

"Oh crap! Arkain, turn on Observation Haki Mode!" Renjiro shouted in his heart.

Without thinking, he activated Observation Mode—his pseudo-Observation Haki. The chaos around him slowed. He carefully began counting the shuriken, which now seemed frozen in the air.

However, the darkness slowed his progress. As time began to run out, Renjiro remembered that Arkain also had a "Visual Assistance Mode", he quickly activated it.

"Time's up. Give me your answer." The mysterious voice echoed through the room.

Taking a deep breath, with cold sweat on his forehead, Renjiro answered in a confident voice: "Total of 138 shuriken. Twelve octagonal, thirty-five pentagonal, twenty-two triangular, and sixty-nine cross-shaped."

"What an amazing sensory perception!"

Clap! Clap!

After a brief silence, the dark room suddenly lit up, followed by a burst of applause. Renjiro finally saw the person who had been speaking to him in the darkness.

He squinted until his eyes adjusted to the sudden brightness, blinking rapidly before he could take in the full view of the room. It was plain and simple—around 30 square meters. There were no furnishings or equipment, just an empty room.

At that moment, six people were present, including Renjiro himself. He didn't recognize four of them—but one, he definitely did, and he was very confident about that person's identity.

Tall, muscular, with a grim face full of old scars. Renjiro had seen him before—in the anime.

This was a well-known figure: the future commander of Konoha's Torture and Interrogation Division—Morino Ibiki. A man who had endured the cruelest tortures and lived to become a legend. He was also the one responsible for scaring Naruto and other examinees during the Chūnin Exams.

"Why is he here…?" Renjiro wracked his memory. He vaguely recalled Ibiki being active during the Water Country campaign—but the details hadn't been clearly shown in the anime.

Ibiki's role in the Hidden Mist front wasn't deeply explored. Still, one thing was certain: he survived. And that alone was enough to reassure Renjiro that maybe—just maybe—he had a chance of surviving this secret mission too.

"Takane Renjiro." Ibiki said at last, his voice was cold and serious as he stepped toward him: "Congratulations. You've passed the test and are now officially part of this mission."

Hearing Ibiki's voice, Renjiro snapped back to reality and replied modestly with a cheeky smile: "It was just luck."

Ibiki stared him down, his expression was completely unreadable under his signature deadpan, scarred face: "Luck or not, doesn't matter. What matters is whether you can survive—and help us complete the mission."

He turned on his heel, as he said: "Follow me. You're the final member of our team."

Renjiro sighed inwardly as he followed in silence.

"...Well, that's ominous. I have a bad feeling about this mission." He glanced at Ibiki's intimidating back and muttered in his heart:

"Just when I thought you were cool..."

---

Ibiki led them through a twisting series of corridors until they reached another dark room.

Renjiro didn't deactivate his Visual Assistance—he'd learned his lesson. He was half-expecting another surprise test and didn't want to be caught off guard again. The moment he stepped into the room—

[Caution: Multiple High-Level Threats Detected! Number: Unknown!]

Arkain's alert flashed in his mind immediately.

"Unknown?" Renjiro narrowed his eyes at the prompt, his expression turned sharp with alertness.

That could only mean one thing—experts. People who could suppress their chakra to the point that even Arkain couldn't detect them were undoubtedly powerful shinobi.

"Find yourselves a seat." Ibiki said coldly, bringing Renjiro and the other four into the room without any introductions.

Ibiki walked to the front and stood before a group of already-gathered figures, all of whom now turned their attention to him.

The moment he began to speak, the atmosphere shifted. His voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the room like a kunai: "All of you were summoned here because this mission demands the best Konoha has in this camp."

A tense silence followed as he continued in a deep, serious tone: "We've received intel that a legendary figure of Kirigakure—the wielder of Samehada, and one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist—Fuguki Suikazan, has arrived on the Water Country front."

The room fell into a deadly silence. The air turned heavy and grim.

Ibiki's eyes swept across the assembled shinobi, as he continued after a slight pause: "With his arrival, the Mist has grown increasingly active. Their scouts have already approached our perimeter. This isn't routine, this is a precursor."

"That's why this team was formed. Your mission: infiltration and reconnaissance. You will move with me. We will identify Mist's objective—and if the opportunity presents itself, we'll sabotage it from within."

"Holy crap!" Renjiro's heart nearly dropped into his stomach. He was completely dumbfounded by the mission's nature.

What level of mission is this?!

Going deep behind enemy lines during wartime… that's at least an A-rank mission!

That's… absolutely an A-rank mission!

A Genin on an A-rank infiltration mission into enemy territory—during a war between two great villages? That wasn't just rare; it was borderline suicidal.

Renjiro stared at Ibiki's back in disbelief: "Damn you, you ugly bastard! Did I offend you in a past life or something?!"

He barely managed to restrain himself from shouting aloud: "What do you have against me?! If you want me dead, just say it!"
