Chapter 21: Chapter 21 : Theory Time
Shisui's Kotoamatsukami was ridiculously powerful, almost on par with Obito's Kamui. However, there was a big condition attached to this power. After using Kotoamatsukami, his eyes entered into a cooldown period.
10 years to be exact.
"I mean 10 freaking years..." he chided with irritation.
If not for this limitation, Sukuna wouldn't have even bothered going after Obito's eyes.
However, since he used both of Shisui's eyes, it was clear that he wasn't going to wait 10 years for Shisui's eye to recharge.
He swapped Shisui's left eye with the one he got from Kakashi. Maybe after 10 years, he'll come back to Shisui's Mangekyo again, but until then, the eye was as good as any other three-tomoe Sharingan for him.
Once he had both of Obito's Sharingan implanted into him, he began, even before checking out all of their powers, to figure out a way to hide them.
For a single night, it didn't matter; however, if he wished to keep his eyes on him always, he had to come up with a solution.
Just like canon, the eyes didn't close themselves. They were always active, eating away at his reserves.
He knew this would happen; the same was the case with Shisui's eyes. Hell, he was even surprised that they even worked. He only had a wild guess that it would work, and he was glad it did.
When he saw he could use the sealing scroll but not any jutsu, he was curious as to why and how. There was also the fact that when he used the sealing scroll, no smoke was created—stored items would just appear like magic—but for everyone else, smoke was generated when they tried it.
This wasn't enough to go about figuring out his problem until he heard Iruka tell him that smoke generates because of chakra wastage. At first, he thought Iruka was just babbling until he observed Sakura's clone test.
Sakura made way too much smoke, even more than Naruto does, and only managed a single clone. When asked to use less chakra by Iruka, her clone got affected.
That's when Sukuna started to piece things together. It turned out that his answers lay in the Yin and Yang chakra release.
There were many clues—like his own use of the sealing scroll to Naruto's original problem regarding the clone jutsu. Naruto was never able to do it.
And everything tied back to Yin and Yang release.
Some jutsus or ninja arts in this world are heavily tied to either Yin or Yang release. While almost every single one needs chakra, which inherently is a mixture of both Yin and Yang energy—
Some applications of chakra in this world just needed more Yin or more Yang in their use.
For example, healing jutsu needed more Yang chakra, while genjutsu needed more Yin chakra. However, none can use Yin and Yang individually, separated from each other. Otherwise, chakra wouldn't be formed in the first place.
So there is always Yin chakra present while someone uses healing jutsu, and there's always Yang chakra present when someone uses genjutsu. That's why both applications of chakra need such precise chakra control.
Because while a person can't produce Yin chakra or Yang chakra separately, they have to have good chakra control to only apply the one needed for the application, while the other part would be wasted.
Here's an example...
Let's say a genjutsu needs 10 points of Yang chakra and 60 points of Yin chakra. What could be the total chakra cost of the jutsu? 60? 10?
Nope... it would be 120. Because when a shinobi generates 60 points of Yin chakra, he automatically will generate 60 points of Yang chakra too—and vice versa. The jutsu will take what it needs and the rest will be wasted.
Thus the smoke...
Sukuna felt like a scientist uncovering the truth of the world—a giddy feeling which was equally rewarding and annoying, because it was costing him too many brain cells which he could have used in other places.
There are, of course, shinobi who lean closer to the Yin or Yang side in their chakra quality. Like the Nara clan and Uchiha clan lean towards Yin, while Senju and the Akimichi go for Yang.
In this case, the shinobi don't operate in a 1:1 ratio of Yin and Yang when they generate chakra.
Maybe a Nara would create chakra with 70% Yin energy and only 30% Yang energy. That's why people from certain bloodlines are good at certain applications of chakra by their birth.
Senjus not only have a great amount of chakra, but they lean closer to the Yang side and thus are excellent in healing.
Uchiha, who lean closer to Yin, are good in genjutsu. It all ties to their blood.
Sukuna, after realizing this, wasn't even surprised to believe that the Nara clan or Akimichi clan might have developed their clan-based ninjutsu just because their bloodline all fell on that side of the spectrum.
Back to the main topic though... Naruto was never able to do a normal academy-style clone not only because his chakra control was shit—which it was—or not only because the Nine Tails made his chakra control even worse—which it absolutely did.
But also for the fact that the normal clone jutsu, outside of needing very little chakra, is actually a more Yin-dominated jutsu. It doesn't have a physical body or anything. It's just like a hologram shaped by chakra.
That's why Naruto, whose chakra leans towards Yang—hell, even the part of Kurama he got was the Yang half—had trouble doing the normal clone.
But when switched to Shadow Clone, in which Yin was still needed to project out his image as a blueprint, it was still a heavily Yang-rich jutsu since it created a complete body—a real physical construct made out of chakra.
If Yin comes from spiritual energy, then Yang comes from physical energy. That physical energy that this jutsu needed made Naruto so suitable for it. Boy practically had Yang energy shoved down his throat at birth.
When Sukuna implanted Sharingan into his eyes, he could tell that the Sharingan was siphoning away at his curse reserves. It also stayed active all the time. He couldn't deactivate it just like Kakashi, but besides that, it worked almost as if he had chakra.
"Even by textbook definition, Yin energy resembles curse energy—which originates from negative emotions—a lot. Both are spiritual in nature. Perhaps that's why I was able to do this," Sukuna mused.
Sealing needs strong Yin energy. Sharingan needs strong Yin energy. Yin theory—Yin chakra resembles curse energy a lot.
"Now how this made Sakura suddenly bad at making clones or, by this theory, weak in Yin release—I have no idea...
No, actually, I do have some ideas. But that is another discussion altogether and probably would take way too much time, resulting in me getting distracted from the current goal... so a hard pass," Sukuna scoffed and shook his head to get his head back in the game.
Sukuna's best guess here was that either both are the same thing or the resemblance is close enough that his curse energy allowed him to use both Sharingan and sealing scrolls.
No wonder people think sealing needs large chakra reserves. It's not that most people lack chakra; it's just that half of their chakra is already worthless because of being of the wrong attribute.
This also explained to him why Itachi's genjutsu—which he only later realized what Itachi was doing—didn't work on him. If curse energy is really like Yin chakra, which is, in a way, a solidification of spiritual energy, no doubt genjutsu doesn't work on him.
This also further explains why he could use Mangekyo ability so easily or why his Mangekyo wasn't negatively affecting him.
It's ironic when we realize that the opposite of curse energy is reverse curse energy, which is used in healing just like Yang.
So, Sukuna, of course, gave it a try—trying to combine both negative and positive energy, trying to replicate chakra—since unlike Sharingan or sealing, most jutsu need a combination of both Yin and Yang chakra.
Unfortunately for Sukuna, both his negative and positive energy ended up cancelling each other out. Because in the end, it was still cursed energy.
He tried some well-thought-out and well-placed binding vows, but none took effect, making it clear that there was no way for him to combine both. Perhaps in a technique like how Gojo's Purple works, but in their raw form, they will just cancel each other out.
Irritation boiled inside him, but ultimately, he just gave up for now. Later maybe he'll find a way, but for now, he just had to work with what he got.
And he got freaking Mangekyo on him.
Currently, finding a way to use the Mangekyo while not damaging them—"aka" losing their light—was the second priority. First was, of course, how to hide them.
He tested it out. Turns out that his strong curse energy had already kind of fortified the eyes to some degree. Since it worked like Yin chakra, it does make sense. They did deteriorate a bit by what little use he got out of them, but it was so minor that, besides checking both eyes side by side and trying to read a hoarding placed almost at the other end of the village, he couldn't tell otherwise.
His first thought was, of course, RCT...
If Hashirama's cells could prevent Obito's Mangekyo from going blank, so can RCT... right?
Well, kind of.
While his idea was right—RCT did heal the Sharingan to lose that little vision issue he had, in which his left eye was able to reach the horizon clearly while the right eye was slightly blurry—he didn't take something important into account.
Unlike Hashirama cells, which are kind of the universal cheat in the Naruto world for better health and stronger chakra, RCT can't be used on others with the same efficiency as one can use it on oneself.
While regenerating a lost limb is child's play for a sorcerer who is good in RCT, it's only limited to his own body. Again, it comes down to efficiency. To others, it would only act as a beefed-up version of the Mystical Palm Technique.
And yes, arguably he wasn't healing others, but those eyes weren't a part of his own body. If he were to lose them and heal his eyes back up, he'd grow his own eyes back—and not the Sharingan.
With significantly less healing potential than he had anticipated and placed his bet on, Sukuna was now pondering whether he should inject some of that Hashirama goodness inside him as well.
It worked for others—why not him, right? He got Obito's right arm, which was made completely out of Hashirama cells, after all.
However, knowing that powerful Yang energy resembles reverse curse energy just like Yin resembles curse energy, he didn't dare to do it.
What if that Yang energy started hammering at his curse energy?
"Damn it all. All this theory is making my brain hurt..."
"Fuck it, I'll figure a way out eventually."
