Chapter 287: Naruto's Blasting Off Again!

"S… Sakura?"

"Huh?" Sakura blurted out, glancing over her shoulder. That black and orange jumpsuit, that head of blonde, spiky hair… "Naruto, is that you!?"

When Tsunade had very nicely asked her to take a stroll about the village, she'd been quite certain she was about to be whisked straight to A&E at Konoha General Hospital and forced to operate elbow-deep in blood, coaxing the entrails back into some poor, hapless sap's guts— so this was a pleasant surprise!

Leaving Tsunade behind, Sakura spun on her heel and ran towards Naruto, arms flung open, her every step punctuated by meaty slaps, as her breasts repeatedly smacked into each other. Transfixed, Naruto and Jiraiya could only gawp, slack-jawed, as the pink-haired beauty's considerable assets shook up and down with gay abandon, straining to burst out of the confines of her loose-fitting top.

"Narutooo!"

Stunned, Naruto could only blink in astonishment as Sakura seized him beneath the armpits and swept him off his feet, spinning him about as though he were some Disney princess. She then set him down, before yanking him into a fierce embrace, pressing his face against her chest.

Naruto's head was promptly engulfed in the soft oblivion of her ample cleavage.

"And I'm happy to see you too!" Naruto's muffled voice echoed from within the deep valley, his breath tickling against her skin. "But I can't… breathe, y'know!"

Sakura shed a few tears of relief as she let go of him.

She'd altered things so drastically from the original timeline, she half-feared the butterfly effect might have somehow sent Naruto to an early grave, plot armour notwithstanding. If he'd perished off-screen and doomed the world, she could scarcely imagine what she'd have done…

"Sakura, your eyes," gasped Tsunade in surprise.

"What about them?" asked Sakura, brushing her stinging eyes with the back of her hand, wiping away the tears.

"Incredible," Jiraiya muttered to himself. "She can even evolve them… oof."

Tsunade elbowed him hard in the ribs.

One night, years ago and after a few too many drinks, Tsunade had let slip Sakura's secret to him. That made six people who knew her main Kekkei Genkai besides Sakura herself— the three Sannin: Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru; Kakashi; and Sakura's two parents.

"Eh?" Sakura hiccoughed, rubbing her eyes harder. "Don't tell me…"

Her emerald eyes were turning crimson to complete their transformation. The two pairs of tomoe in her eyes spun closer together, making room for a third to appear in orbit around her pupils.

"You were saying, Sasuke?" said Naruto smugly. Thanks to Jiraiya, he now knew enough about the Uchiha to realise what Sakura's changes signified. "What was it, again— I've already won in every way that matters, y'know?"

Sasuke grit his teeth, unwilling to admit his defeat.

Only a formidable emotional upheaval could evolve the Sharingan! Why, then, hadn't Sakura's eyes changed for him, but for that hopeless dunce, Naruto!? Could it be that he had overestimated her attraction to him?

"Hmm? What's this? Don't tell me you thought you had something special with Sakura?" Naruto sang tauntingly, as he hopped around Sasuke like an annoying fly. "Just so you know, I'm the only one who understands her the most, y'know…"

"Get away from me, loser," growled Sasuke.

"Is that the bark of a defeated dog I hear?" chanted Naruto, holding a hand to his ear.

At that moment, Sasuke looked positively ready to burst, so Sakura swiftly stepped in to explain her reasoning for her Sharingan's sudden evolution.

The truth was that after everything Sasuke had weathered in the original timeline (his scrap with Bee, the Five Kage and heaven knew what else) Sakura had become convinced that his plot armour was quite indestructible, so she'd scarcely ever bothered to worry about him over the past two years. Besides, he was a big boy, and he could handle himself.

As for Naruto, that little brat…

Much like Solid Snake and Ōtsutsuki Asura, the poor boy seemed to have inherited only the worst of his parents' genes. Even though Naruto's base self boasted an impressive 4 KK at this point, his reserves still fell vastly short of Minato's and Kushina's immense chakra pools.

To make matters worse, Naruto lacked his father's brilliance, and not a hint of his mother's singular chakra gifts ran in his blood. The only keepsakes he'd inherited from them were his father's unruly blonde spikey hair, his mother's infuriating stubbornness, and a miserably lonely childhood to boot.

Even so, Naruto had two things going in his favour: one thoroughly unreliable chakra puppy, and a silver tongue capable of talking him out of almost any scrape— provided, of course, he was dealing with a sympathetic villain that was inclined to listen to him ramble on.

So, was it any wonder Sakura had been fretting over Naruto's safety? Without him, Sasuke hadn't the faintest chance of sealing away the Rabbit Goddess— who, if ever she broke free from the moon, would bring about the end of the world.

And the world, of course, was a matter near and dear to Sakura's heart, seeing as she happened to live in it.

"Oh," Naruto said dejectedly, once Sakura had finished explaining that it wasn't her burning passion for him that had awakened her Sharingan's final tomoe, but rather her relief at his wellbeing. "Oh!" he added, brightening suddenly as the full weight of just how much she cared about him dawned upon him.

"That only means Sakura looks at you much as one might pity an abandoned litter of kittens left in a cardboard box by the roadside," Sasuke said coolly. "Best not to get any ideas… loser."

Sakura gave Sasuke a sidelong, perplexed glance. Why was he being so hostile to Naruto, she wondered obliviously? It's not as if he was interested in her… she knew that for a fact from the anime.

Kakashi shook his head sadly.

Watching his two disciples squabble before him, he couldn't help but recall an ancient fragment of history: the fate of the two men who had built Konohagakure. So long as Naruto and Sasuke drew breath, the cycle of hatred was destined to keep rolling on without end...

"So much for an emotional reunion," Tsunade remarked sardonically, shaking her head. "Teenage boys, honestly… is there ever a moment when they're not in heat?"

"Come on, Tsunade," Jiraiya said with a chuckle. "A spot of friendly banter's never done anyone any harm, and boys always perform better when they have a rival to call their own. They remind me quite a bit of how Orochimaru and I were at their age…"

"I don't recall Orochimaru having much of an interest in girls," said Tsunade flatly.

Meanwhile, Naruto's and Sasuke's friendly argument had devolved into a bout of one-upmanship.

"I'll have you know that for her training," Sasuke bragged. "Sakura trusted me to be enough of a gentleman to bathe naked next to me."

"Oh, yeah?" Naruto bristled. "That's nothing! I'll have ya know that, one time, I sucked on her nip—"

"SHANNAROOOO!"

And on his very first day back in Konoha, Naruto turned into a shooting star.
