Chapter 144: Sakura is Not in This Chapter

Boruto peeked over the large pile of debris behind which he and Adult Sasuke had taken refuge.

"What's going on, Sasuke-sensei?" Boruto whispered. "Isn't Mitsuki's dad an ally of the Hidden Leaf? Why are the Sannin fighting each other?"

Adult Sasuke said nothing, as he gazed at the battle of monstrous proportions unfolding in front of him. On one side stood Jiraiya atop the giant toad Gamabunta and Tsunade atop the giant slug Katsuyu, and on the other stood Orochimaru, who had transformed himself into a gigantic white-scaled eight-headed serpent.

The Konoha Strict Correctional Facility where they had been imprisoned lay in ruins as a result of the Sannin's battle— the main pavilion had been completely flattened, and a large part of the substructure had collapsed. The prison was listing slightly on its side, which was causing the entire structure to slowly slide into the fiery depths of the active volcano in which it had been built.

"Milady," the gigantic slug called out gently. "My foot is starting to sizzle… The air is getting a tad too hot and dry for my skin, so I'm afraid that I'll be forced to cancel the summoning soon…"

The air was filled with the smell of roast chicken and escargot— as more and more of the structure sank below the molten fluid, lava continued slowly creeping towards the three combatants fighting atop the ruins of the prison's main building, incinerating the corpses of the prisoners who littered the ground along the way— these criminals had all died trying to take advantage of Orochimaru's attack to flee…

"Just hold on as long as you can, Katsuyu," said Tsunade grimly. "Not just anyone can face down Hiruzen-sensei and win without even taking a single scratch, so I'll need all the help I can get…"

"Just give yourself up, Orochimaru!" Jiraiya shouted. "You don't stand a chance against the both of us!"

"Me? Give myself up? After gaining this incredible power?" Orochimaru sniggered from each of his eight snake mouths. "To live is to change, but the Leaf never changes— mark my words, Jiraiya… I will keep changing my skin for as long as I need to!"

Gamabunta the giant toad let out a war cry and swung his blade, but it shattered against the rows of spikes lining the eight-headed snake's scaly hide.

Orochimaru had successfully taken over Kimimaro's body and gained his Shikotsumyakyu Kekkei Genkai, granting him the ability to manipulate his own bones more dynamically than any bodily modification technique could!

In his current state, Orochimaru was untouchable. He looked like a cross between a hydra and a porcupine, with a myriad of pointy bony growths covering the entirety of his eight snaky appendages— the simplicity of a snake's skeleton was much better suited to bone manipulation than a human's!

"Milady, watch out!" Katsuyu cried out.

Faster than a being his size ought to be able to move, Orochimaru slithered towards the enormous slug and coiled his serpentine body around her, the spikes protruding from his scales tearing through her flesh like a chainsaw. Katsuyu burst into a thousand different pieces— all clones of herself— and Tsunade was forced to jump off.

However, even though Katsuyu had survived Orochimaru's initial onslaught, dividing herself in such fashion had vastly increased her surface area, causing her slime to dry up at an even more alarming rate; due to the extreme heat of the lava, which was still inching ever closer to them.

"I'm very sorry, milady!" said the thousands of Katsuyu. "I must retreat!"

And with a poof, the mountain of slugs disappeared.

"Can't we do something to help, Sasuke-sensei?" said Boruto urgently. "We can't just let Granny Tsunade die!"

The Adult Sasuke's chakra reserves were currently abysmally low, since Urashiki had previously stolen most of his chakra, but this wasn't why Sasuke was hesitant to reveal his powers— it was because he wished to avoid changing the future by altering the past.

However, the history he knew had already been drastically changed— at this point in time, Orochimaru ought to have been recuperating in his hideout, due to being forced to switch to an incompatible body. But if any of the three Sannin perished here today, history would likely change even more…

"Die, Tsunade!" Orochimaru hissed.

One of Orochimaru's heads plunged towards Tsunade, who smacked it away with her monstrous strength— and then came another, and another! Jiraiya and Gamabunta valiantly jumped in front of her, attempting to block the hit for her, but another of the eight heads swung at them, batting them away.

"Amenotejikara!"

Space and time warped, and Tsunade suddenly found herself cowering next to Boruto— she and Sasuke had exchanged places, just as Orochimaru had been about to snap her up and devour her whole.

…!!!

"That eye!"

Orochimaru suddenly froze, with his eight maws still open— upon closer look, it wasn't one of the eyes which had shamed him all those years ago, but that eye was eerily similar, in a certain way…

"Mangekyō Sharingan…" said Orochimaru slowly, a hint of greed creeping into his voice. "This truly is my lucky day…"

"You're free to try and steal my eyes," said Adult Sasuke coolly. "If you don't mind a repeat of that time…"

Orochimaru closed his sixteen eyes in a hurry, but it was too little too late— he was already reliving the terror of his one-sided loss to fourteen-year-old Itachi, again and again and again! It was just a simple Sharingan Genjutsu, but with the Yin amplification of his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, Sasuke had no trouble reawakening Orochimaru's trauma!

"What the— you!?" said Tsunade in stupefaction. "Why are you helping us?"

Suddenly, Orochimaru's gigantic eight-headed body exploded into a rain of snakes, which began hastily slithering into cracks, and towards the bridge that led out of the volcano's mouth.

"How interesting… another Uchiha survivor," came Orochimaru's sinister voice from all around them. "I'll return for those eyes of yours when I've fully adapted to this body, so wait for me until then…"

"Sage Art: Toad Oil Flame Bullet!"

Jiraiya and Gamabunta had returned with a vengeance, spitting toad oil and fire— Jiraiya had taken the opportunity of getting thrown out of the fight to enter Sage Mode! The fiery napalm washed over the sea of snakes, incinerating them— but as long as one survived, Orochimaru would return!

"Tsk, I didn't get them all," said Jiraiya, clicking his tongue in annoyance as he felt Orochimaru leave his sensing range.

However, Jiraiya did not let his guard down— he was in the presence of a very suspicious individual whose right eye socket housed a Mangekyō Sharingan…

A certain one-eyed Uchiha had once attacked the Leaf Village, killing the Fourth Hokage and his wife, and according to a report he'd once read, a certain one-eyed Uchiha had also helped Itachi eliminate his entire clan. Someone who claimed to be named Uchiha Madara…

Sasuke suddenly froze— he had just sensed someone using the Yomotsu Hirasaka. His Rinnegan was connected to the special dimension the Ōtsutsuki used as a medium to teleport, so each time this particular Space-Time ability was used near him, he would immediately know about it!

"There's no time to explain," Sasuke said urgently. "Somebody is after the Nine-Tail's chakra inside of Naruto— we need to return to the village right now!"

"Look, we're sorry for lying about being travelling performers, okay?" said Boruto desperately, as he and Tsunade joined Sasuke and Jiraiya. "But we really do want to help, ya know!"

Tsunade and Jiraiya gazed at Boruto curiously— the little brat did remind Jiraiya a lot of his disciple Naruto, and the edgy bloke standing a short distance away didn't seem very Madara-ish… whatever that meant.

Jiraiya liked to consider himself a pretty good judge of character— and even though these two shinobi were extremely suspicious, they didn't seem to be lying…
