Chapter 42 – "The Three of Us Together—He Can’t Possibly Kill Us All!"
Nagi knew his limits. So while his earlier attack had looked devastating, in truth, he hadn't struck any vital points.
"You guys should be grateful it was me you ran into. If it had been some genderless psycho, things would've ended way worse for you."
After taking all the mission scrolls from Shino's group, Nagi even left a Blood Recovery Pill and some medicine specifically for Hinata.
Don't ask why only Hinata got anything.
The other two were guys—toughing it out would build character.
"Th-thank you…"
Hinata murmured instinctively as she accepted the medicine.
The sight nearly made Nagi laugh out loud.
Still, it was clear that Hinata's constitution was noticeably stronger than the two boys'. Maybe it was due to all her training with Gentle Fist.
With that, Nagi vanished from their sight.
"…Ow, damn it hurts!"
Kiba gritted his teeth, crawling up to check on Akamaru.
"Whew. He's just unconscious—not hurt."
Meanwhile, under Nagi's enhanced sensory perception, he quickly locked onto another group.
Deep in the eastern sector of the Forest of Death…
The trio from the Hidden Sound Village were already on high alert. They knew Nagi would come for them.
"Are we really just giving up on Lord Orochimaru's mission?" Zaku asked in frustration.
To him, Dosu was nothing but a coward. Why wouldn't he just fight Nagi head-on?
"Enough!" Dosu barked.
Easy for Zaku to talk—he wasn't the one who'd nearly gotten his neck snapped last time.
"You'll see! If that bastard shows up again, I'll take him down myself—for Lord Orochimaru!"
No sooner had Zaku spoken than a familiar voice rang out.
"Oh yeah? No time like the present."
"Nagi!"
The three of them froze, blood draining from their faces.
"Decapitating Airwave!"
Zaku raised both hands and launched a concentrated soundwave blast toward the voice.
BOOM!!
A shockwave tore through the trees, blasting several down in the explosion.
Clap clap clap…
Nagi casually dusted himself off and stepped into view.
"Impossible! My Decapitating Airwave is insanely powerful! How could he—?!"
Zaku stared at him like he'd just seen a ghost.
Don't ask whether that move hurt. This wasn't even a matter of pain—Nagi wasn't even scratched.
"Looks like you got lucky."
"Didn't Orochimaru tell you guys to kill me? Well then—come on!"
He stood there, motionless, yet exuding the pressure of a mountain.
"If we all go at him together, we might survive this!"
Dosu's eyes narrowed.
Zaku and Kin understood instantly—there was no running. So the three lunged at Nagi at once.
"Too slow."
In a single flicker, Nagi was already in front of them.
Just as Zaku was about to unleash another sound attack, Nagi shattered his only hope with a single palm strike.
Then he turned, landing a kick that sent Kin flying over ten meters.
Against these two? Taijutsu alone was more than enough.
"Dosu… gah…"
Zaku watched, horrified, as Dosu didn't even try to fight alongside them.
He ran.
And while running, he flung away all his scrolls—hoping Nagi wouldn't bother chasing.
Zaku's pupils dimmed with unwillingness and disbelief.
"No… no!"
Kin, the only one left, backed away in terror as Nagi slowly approached.
"Tell me—do you have anything that can contact Orochimaru?"
Nagi didn't care about her or the Sound ninja.
He just wanted to see if they had a way to reach Orochimaru.
"I-it's with Dosu!"
Kin didn't dare lie.
She immediately told him about the transmission scroll Orochimaru had left them.
"Interesting…"
Sure enough, Nagi spotted the discarded scroll among the items Dosu had tossed.
Looked like Dosu had thrown away everything in his desperate escape.
"How do you use this?"
After fiddling with the scroll, Nagi ultimately handed it to Kin.
"You do it. Contact Orochimaru for me."
Kin didn't dare refuse. She activated the scroll as ordered.
"Dosu? What is it? Something urgent?"
From the other side of the forest, Orochimaru's voice came through, surprised by the sudden contact.
Could it be… Dosu had succeeded?
Cough cough. "Orochimaru, huh? You'd better wash your neck and wait for me."
As soon as he heard Nagi's voice, Orochimaru froze.
The air went still.
"…How interesting."
Before he could say another word, the scroll's signal was cut off—Nagi had already ended the transmission.
Then, Nagi placed his palm on Kin's head and gently sent her off.
"Man… I'm too nice."
He muttered to himself.
But he wasn't lying.
If he hadn't killed them here, Orochimaru would've used them as sacrifices for Impure World Reincarnation. That ending would've been way worse than death.
So in a way, Nagi had done them a favor.
"Now then… who's next?"
"…Gotcha."
After locating his next targets, Nagi smiled in anticipation.
Fishing for weaklings never gets old.
It's fun every single time.
And today, his luck seemed pretty damn good.
—
Elsewhere, Gaara's team had just defeated a group of Rain ninja and taken their scrolls.
"That gives us the complete set."
"We should get out of here, fast," Temari said sternly.
Something about this forest just felt wrong.
"Why leave? Everyone here's weak as hell," Kankurō argued.
He wanted to keep fishing. With opponents this trash, what was there to worry about?
"Shut up."
Gaara's expression darkened.
