Chapter 40 – The Second Exam: Provoking Orochimaru!
[Just uploaded a new Naruto fanfic! Check it out and enjoy!!]
Thankfully, Ibiki's nightmare was finally over.
After the end of the first exam, Nagi once again chose to rest at Ichiraku Ramen, but he didn't expect to encounter a rather unusual ninja there.
"So, you're Nagi, huh? I've heard about you from the old Third Hokage."
A man in a red outer coat with signature long white hair sat down beside him—none other than Jiraiya.
Right next to them was Naruto.
"Whoa! Nagi! Can't believe I ran into you here!"
Naruto was thrilled to see him, and quickly introduced Jiraiya.
"No need for introductions. I've heard of this little brother already—Konoha's number one genius!" Jiraiya said, eyes gleaming.
Ever since his return to Konoha, nearly every rumor Jiraiya heard had something to do with Nagi's incredible talent.
Even the old man Hiruzen considered him a once-in-a-generation prodigy.
"You actually awakened Wood Release, huh? Looks like the blood of the Senju clan flows in your veins."
Jiraiya nodded in approval.
"But you'd better be careful in this Chūnin Exams… I've got a friend who may have their eye on you."
He then added the warning with a serious expression.
Nagi didn't need to guess—he knew right away that Jiraiya was talking about Orochimaru.
But it didn't matter. Against fully maxed-out Wood Release, what could Orochimaru possibly do?
"All right, I've got to take Naruto off for training. Catch you later!"
After finishing their meal, Jiraiya and Naruto left.
But their conversation had given Nagi an important clue:
Tsunade might be returning to the village soon.
Unlike the conservative Hiruzen, if Tsunade took over, the entire balance of power in Konoha could shift dramatically.
Those old advisers—like Danzō—probably wouldn't have much of a future under her rule.
"What am I thinking so far ahead for?" Nagi muttered, shaking his head.
With his awakened Senju bloodline and Wood Release, no matter how Tsunade reshaped Konoha, his own position would remain unshakable.
Soon, it was time for the second exam of the Chūnin Exams.
Compared to the first written test, the rules this time were much simpler:
Capture the Heaven and Earth scrolls.
There were thirteen Heaven scrolls and thirteen Earth scrolls, randomly assigned to twenty-six teams. Any team that managed to acquire one of each and reach the destination within five days through the Forest of Death would pass.
"Nagi, Nagi, are you going solo again?"
Just before the second exam began, Sakura and Ino approached him, looking at him hopefully.
In this kind of test, going solo would be a serious disadvantage.
"I prefer being on my own."
Nagi's eyes were firm.
As for the scrolls?
He figured whoever ran into him at the start would just be out of luck.
"Sigh… what a shame. Looks like this year's Chūnin Exams are gonna be a total bloodbath!"
Kabuto had already become the number one Nagi fanboy.
But Nagi wasn't paying him any attention—instead, his eyes locked onto a strange, androgynous-looking ninja in the crowd.
He slowly approached the one disguised as Orochimaru.
"Hey, I'm talking to you—wanna team up?" Nagi asked bluntly.
Might as well squad up with Orochimaru now—it'd save him the trouble of hunting him down later in that huge forest.
Once they were inside, he'd just take him out quietly.
"Oh?"
Orochimaru hadn't expected to be noticed.
As expected of the top Konoha genius who had awakened the Senju clan's most elite kekkei genkai!
Orochimaru licked his lips unconsciously, eyes filled with curiosity toward Nagi.
"I refuse."
That answer genuinely surprised Nagi.
This damn snake actually turned him down?
In truth, Orochimaru had another priority target for this exam—Uchiha Sasuke.
"Sorry, I already have teammates," Orochimaru replied coldly.
Even though he had his eye on Nagi, he had to admit—Nagi was simply too strong.
So strong that Orochimaru didn't feel confident he could defeat him inside the Forest of Death.
"Oh? You mean these worthless teammates of yours? Just ditch them and let me join instead."
Nagi pushed further, clearly not letting go.
He really seemed eager to teach this snake a lesson.
"Hey, hey! What are you two doing?"
A kunoichi ran over when she saw the commotion between Nagi and Orochimaru.
"I'm warning you—private team-ups before entering the forest are strictly forbidden. All matters must be settled after you're inside!"
Anko had already been warned by Ibiki after the first exam to keep an eye on a particular Konoha ninja named Nagi.
At first, she didn't take it seriously.
He's a fellow Konoha ninja—what could possibly go wrong?
But before they'd even entered the exam site, this Nagi guy was already causing trouble.
"I know you—Konoha's number one genius!" Anko said.
"But I'm telling you right now—if you break the rules, I'll personally rip you to shreds!"
She forced a fierce expression.
Honestly? It had zero intimidation value.
Standing before her was Nagi, a walking cheat code, and Orochimaru, a cold-blooded killer.
And she thought she could scare the two of them?
"Proctor, I just wanted to discuss ideals with this fellow shinobi. That's not against the rules, is it?"
Nagi said innocently, smiling at the bold yet beautiful Anko.
"Is that true?" she asked, glaring at Orochimaru.
"It is," he replied smoothly.
His response only made Anko more irritated.
"Hmph. You'd better not die in there too quickly. I happen to like guys as handsome as you."
She gave a mock snort at Nagi.
"Not bad," Nagi replied with a smirk, "but I'm not really into… small girls."
With that, he turned and walked off, leaving behind nothing but a cool silhouette.
"What's that supposed to mean? Is he saying I'm youthful and beautiful?"
Anko looked puzzled at his parting words.
Calling her a 'small girl'—was that a compliment about her youth?
"Or maybe… he was saying you're just flat-chested," Orochimaru added wickedly.
His words nearly sent Anko into a full mental breakdown.
