Chapter 21 – First Mission Outside the Village
"Whew… that almost cracked my spiritual focus."
For once, the usually calm and composed Nagi felt like his inner peace had nearly been shattered.
"I'd better hurry up and practice these jutsu."
He first took out a few of the less dangerous forbidden techniques to work on.
As for the really shady ones—like the Dead Demon Consuming Seal?
Yeah, those went straight to the shelf.
Just understanding the theory was enough. With his overwhelming strength, he had no need for something that risky.
Instead, he focused on a few key jutsu—starting with the Mutually Multiplying Explosive Tags.
Don't ask why that one first. Simple—it looked badass.
Thanks to his god-tier talent, Nagi fully mastered the technique in under a few minutes.
Even after adding in the rest of the jutsu, it took less than half an hour to learn them all completely.
The next few days, Nagi stayed home, getting familiar with everything he'd just learned.
Meanwhile, team assignments across the village proceeded exactly as he expected:
Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura were assigned to Kakashi's Team 7.
Shikamaru Nara, Ino Yamanaka, and Chōji Akimichi were placed under Asuma in Team 10.
Hinata Hyūga, Kiba Inuzuka, and Shino Aburame went to Team 8, led by the mature and beautiful Kurenai Yuhi.
And just as Nagi had predicted, their missions consisted of weeding, mail delivery, and chasing lost pets.
Team 7, Mission Hall.
"Nope. Now I really understand why Nagi chose to go solo!"
Naruto was groaning non-stop.
These missions had zero difficulty. They were tedious, boring, and carried no real value.
This wasn't what he imagined ninja life to be at all.
"I already miss Nagi…"
"Alright, enough whining. Nagi has jōnin-level power—of course he doesn't have to deal with stuff like this."
Kakashi, who had overheard, commented casually.
He had a vivid impression of Nagi.
That Wood Release of his could defeat two elite Root jōnin in under a minute.
Kakashi had seen Wood Release before.
But compared to Nagi's, Yamato's version was like a random weed on the side of the road.
In fact, Kakashi used to think pretty highly of Yamato's Wood Style… until he saw Nagi's.
After that, it became impossible to put them in the same league.
"All right, enough chatter. I've got a C-rank mission here."
From that point on, everything played out in a familiar pattern.
About three days passed.
"I should probably go do a mission."
After holing up at home for days, Nagi finally decided to head out.
Not for any particular reason… except that he was running out of money.
Becoming a ninja didn't mean you got a paycheck every day. Time to go earn some quick cash.
He got ready, fast and clean, and made his way to the mission center.
Inside, the walls were filled with listings for various D-rank missions.
"Hey, what's that kid doing here by himself?"
Nagi stood out clearly. Most mission requests were handled by squad leaders—but Nagi was alone.
"You there, young man. Are you here to pick up a mission for your sensei?"
One of the mission clerks came over to ask.
Nagi didn't bother saying much.
He simply handed over the special jōnin forehead protector given to him by the Third Hokage.
"W-Wait… you're a jōnin?!"
The clerk stared at him, stunned.
A kid this young… and he's a jōnin?
What would that do to the self-esteem of all the veterans who'd spent a lifetime stuck at chūnin?
"Special jōnin."
Nagi clarified.
The Hokage had granted him that status simply because… even he wasn't sure how strong Nagi really was.
So the compromise was to assign him as a special jōnin.
"It's Nagi—the Number One Genius of Konoha!"
The moment he revealed the forehead protector, the crowd around him instantly recognized him.
After all, he was the only one in the entire village who had earned a jōnin headband right after graduating.
"That's him! The kid who got promoted to jōnin the same day he graduated!"
All around him, chūnin and even full-fledged jōnin began to whisper and stare.
"What missions am I eligible to take right now?"
Nagi asked casually.
The clerk immediately brought out a selection of B-rank missions.
"Apologies, but the Hokage has a rule—newcomers can only accept missions up to B-rank for their first assignment."
The clerk sounded a little embarrassed.
Technically, A-rank missions were available too, but by protocol, they weren't allowed for first-timers.
"Find me something related to the Land of Waves."
Nagi hadn't forgotten why he came here in the first place.
He was here to make money. And nothing screamed 'walking treasure chest' like Gatō.
"Uh… Land of Waves?"
The clerk was surprised by such a specific request.
Still, he quickly began digging through the B-rank files.
After a moment—
"Sorry, I don't think we have any B-rank missions related to the Land of Waves right now."
The clerk scratched his head awkwardly.
He'd hoped to leave a good impression on the village's top genius, but this was turning out to be pretty awkward.
"No problem. As long as it's in the Land of Waves, I'll take it."
The mission itself didn't matter. As long as it brought him there, that was enough.
"Oh! In that case, I do have something."
The clerk quickly pulled out a C-rank scroll.
"This one's an investigation mission—looking into a case of missing children."
"There aren't many ninja in the Land of Waves, so most of the missions involving that area are C-rank."
"I'll take it."
Nagi accepted the mission without hesitation.
