Chapter 58: CHAPTER 58 - Designing the Biomechanical Assistant

The treatment continued late into the night, and it wasn't until Hyuga Mirai was drenched in sweat that Aoki, the medical jonin, finally sent him to rest.

The moment Mirai stepped out of the medical camp, he felt the exhaustion weighing on him. Not only did he need to focus on performing medical ninjutsu, but he also had to act and use his Yang Release chakra to stimulate his skin, making him sweat heavily. Even so, Mirai had successfully completed eleven critical surgeries. As his shadow clones were dispelled, he feigned a headache, which prompted Aoki to urge him to rest.

After this performance, Mirai could already imagine how much his reputation would rise among the ninja stationed at the front lines in the Land of Wind. While he wouldn't be considered a hero of Konoha, many of the ninjas on the front line had been treated by him, and they would be the ones spreading his name. A good reputation might not carry much weight in Konoha, but it would be invaluable at the front. It would make accepting missions and moving freely far easier—after all, his status as a Chunin imposed many limitations.

Mirai slowly made his way to his resting quarters, only to find someone inside. Given that enemies weren't likely to be in the Konoha camp, it was probably either Kiyo Hyuga or Kurenai Yuhi.

Without showing any signs, Mirai lifted the curtain and walked inside, only to see Kurenai slumped over the table, nearly asleep. A basket of rice balls sat beside her.

"Kurenai, wake up," Mirai said, gently tapping her, waking her from her half-slumber.

"Mirai-kun? When did you get here?" Kurenai blinked in confusion. Even though she had been drifting off, she should have noticed someone entering.

"I just got here, thank you for bringing me food, Kurenai," Mirai replied with a smile. "But you're tired too. You should rest. There might be missions tomorrow."

"I went to the medical camp earlier and saw you treating the wounded. I knew you wouldn't have time to eat," Kurenai said with a smile, tilting her head as if claiming credit for her thoughtfulness.

"Then I'll head back now. Mirai-kun, after you eat, make sure you get some rest too," Kurenai added. Though she wanted to say more, upon seeing the exhaustion and sweat on Mirai's face, she only offered a quick reminder before leaving.

Once Kurenai had left, the weariness on Mirai's face disappeared. He opened his Byakugan to monitor his surroundings.

Today, after completing the enemy-clearing mission, he had been summoned to the medical camp and had been busy for nearly ten hours. To be honest, he didn't feel particularly tired.

Mirai's chakra was growing daily, and it recovered at an impressive rate. The chakra depletion he had experienced in the medical camp wouldn't have drained him even if it had continued for an entire day.

This was thanks to the Hashirama Cells' genetic sequence. After integrating this sequence into his body, Mirai's control over Yang Release chakra had reached a whole new level.

Whereas before he would rate his chakra control ability at a "1", now he could confidently say it was at "5".

"Finally some time for myself," Mirai sighed, feeling the burden of the war. No, it wasn't the war itself, but the fact that he had been dragged into it that made things so troublesome.

"Let's get back to the biomechanical assistant design."

With his Byakugan activated, Mirai was able to carefully monitor his surroundings for any interruptions, allowing him to focus on his research. Since arriving at the battlefield in the Land of Wind, he had obtained twenty-one puppets, the strongest of which was a Sand ninja Jonin's puppet. Unfortunately, the ninja had been caught before he could even use the puppet, and he was killed by Mirai's group.

Mirai began taking the puppets out one by one, testing them. He assessed how flexible and responsive they were when controlled by chakra strings.

"They should have similar reaction speeds to bioelectromagnetic sensors. However, using chakra to control the puppet allows for a variety of combat styles. That's something worth considering. There's also the issue of the energy source for the drive," Mirai mused.

Designing a biomechanical assistant with its own consciousness and the ability to fight autonomously would hinge primarily on solving the issue of the energy source.

When Dr. Genus created the armored gorilla, he used a nuclear battery pack that not only sustained the gorilla's daily needs but also provided powerful energy during combat. However, Mirai currently lacked the resources to create such a battery in the ninja world.

"Could chakra serve as the energy source?" he wondered. "The fusion of Eight-Tails cells and Hashirama Cells might be an avenue of research. But setting up a chakra supply system is no easy feat."

Mirai took out a pen and paper, and as he sketched out mechanical circuit designs, he thought about the energy supply system. He made several revisions, adjusting certain elements based on the characteristics of metals in the ninja world.

"Beast Tails, Star Stones from the Star Ninja Village, Zero-Tails, all of these could serve as potential energy sources. However, the most readily available one would be the Star Stone from the Star Ninja Village. I remember it has radioactive properties that could be harmful to humans," Mirai recalled.

Suddenly, he paused, his pen halting in mid-air. "Wait, radioactive… If I use the radioactive characteristics of the Star Stone, I might be able to create an energy furnace. This could be the solution to the energy supply issue."

Mirai's lips curved into a slight smile. However, all of this depended on getting his hands on the Star Stone.

The Star Ninja Village was a small village in the Land of Bears, and its strength was likely not very high. If it came down to it, Mirai thought, he could always hire a few bounty hunters from the black market. A few million should be enough to convince the greedy Kakuzu to take on such a task, given his love for money.

With the energy source issue now potentially solved, Mirai felt lighter as he continued to design. Though he wasn't entirely sure about the properties of the Star Stone, if it didn't work out, he would just have to consider targeting the Tailed Beasts.

"Chakra-conducting metals don't have the required hardness, but they should suffice for transmitting chakra during ninjutsu. As for the outer shell, I'll need to find a lightweight metal with high durability," Mirai muttered.

Suddenly, he sensed a chakra approaching from underground. He focused his Byakugan on the ground and soon spotted a snake slithering toward him.

"So it's a White Snake. Do they really rely on summoning beasts to relay messages in the camp?" Mirai thought.

The White Snake emerged from the ground and immediately began crawling up his leg, eventually coiling around his shoulder. From its mouth, it spat out a scroll.

"Just put it on the table, no need to crawl all over me," Mirai said, uncomfortable with the snake's slime. He placed the snake on the table and took the scroll, carefully wiping it with a cloth before opening it to read.

After scanning the message, Mirai couldn't help but frown. "Why summon me in the middle of the night...?"
