Chapter 169: CHAPTER 169 - Konoha’s Concession
The Konoha Alliance Treaty, signed by the First Hokage and the previous Daimyo, outlined Konoha's status within the Land of Fire, as well as the privileges and financial support provided by the Daimyo's government.
Konoha's resources were entirely dependent on the Daimyo's backing—food supplies, weaponry, and other essential goods were all allocated by the government. While Konoha had a few weapons shops, they could only meet the daily needs of the village's shinobi. In times of war, however, it was the Daimyo's logistical support that kept Konoha running.
Now that the Daimyo had mentioned reconsidering the alliance treaty, it meant he was serious.
"Hyuga Mirai and Ayaka Uzumaki are traitors and enemies of Konoha. They inflicted great damage on the village during the Nine-Tails incident, and the death of the Fourth Hokage is closely tied to them. According to the Konoha Alliance Treaty, Konoha's rogue ninjas are also considered traitors to the Land of Fire. So what exactly is the Daimyo trying to say here?"
Danzo's cold gaze locked onto the noble envoy, his demeanor exuding an unmistakable air of deadly intent.
In truth, he was already contemplating eliminating not just this messenger but the Daimyo himself.
Regardless of his disagreements with Hiruzen Sarutobi, Danzo's loyalty to Konoha was absolute. If the Daimyo had truly chosen to side with traitors, then replacing him with a more compliant ruler would be in Konoha's best interest.
A chilling glint flashed in Danzo's visible eye.
"Elder Danzo," the noble envoy spoke calmly, "as I've stated, this is not just the Daimyo's decision—it is a collective petition from dozens of noble families. Even the Daimyo has no choice but to support them."
With a measured breath, he continued, "The Uzumaki Trade Association is expected to introduce fourteen new products over the next five years, generating billions in revenue for the Land of Fire. It's likely that a portion of the funding allocated to Konoha comes from these very profits."
The envoy's voice turned sharper. "Recently, Konoha's ANBU have arrested multiple key figures within the Uzumaki Trade Association under the charge of harboring traitors. Many of those detained belong to influential noble families across the land. If Konoha does not cease these actions—"
Danzo didn't need to hear the rest. He already understood.
Threatening someone's wealth was akin to taking their life. The noble families, furious at Konoha's interference, had turned to the Daimyo for intervention. If he had refused, they might have taken matters into their own hands—placing bounties on Konoha's shinobi, targeting even mid- and low-level operatives. A single bounty of one million ryo was enough to attract countless mercenaries and rogue ninjas.
Furthermore, the Daimyo had long harbored grievances against Konoha. The financial minister's assassination, attacks on noble-backed trade ventures—Konoha, once the protector of the Land of Fire, now seemed to be turning against its own nation. Yet, despite this, the village continued to demand ever-increasing funds.
So when the nobles arrived at his doorstep, the Daimyo wasted no time in dispatching an envoy to deliver his ultimatum.
"We will never stop pursuing traitors—"
"Danzo!"
Hiruzen Sarutobi's voice rang out sharply, cutting off Danzo's defiant statement. The sudden interruption caused Danzo to momentarily freeze.
Once he had silenced Danzo, Hiruzen turned to the noble envoy, his tone calm yet firm.
"Please inform the Daimyo that I will personally visit him soon to discuss this matter in detail."
The noble envoy visibly relaxed, nodding in approval. If the Hokage had chosen to take a diplomatic approach rather than escalate tensions like Danzo, then his mission could be considered a success.
"The Daimyo greatly anticipates your visit, Lord Hokage," he replied smoothly.
"Konoha understands the Daimyo's position," Hiruzen continued, his voice carrying a measured weight. "Regarding the matter of rogue ninja, I trust that through careful discussion, we will find a solution that benefits both Konoha and the Daimyo's government."
"Very well," the envoy said with a slight bow. "I will deliver your message to the Daimyo immediately."
With the tense atmosphere diffused, Hiruzen escorted the envoy out. Once the doors closed behind them, only Hiruzen, Danzo, Koharu Utatane, and Homura Mitokado remained in the office.
"You're not seriously considering surrendering, are you?" Danzo stepped forward, his voice filled with restrained fury.
"What do you suggest, then?" Hiruzen exhaled a slow stream of smoke, his gaze meeting Danzo's without wavering. "The list of noble families is right here. Do you want your Root operatives to kill them all?"
"Kill them all?"
Danzo clenched his teeth. Hiruzen's words were absurd.
If he actually did that, not only would Konoha's ANBU and elite jonin turn against him, but the other great nations would have all the justification they needed to unite against Konoha.
Ninja villages existed because they were employed by nobles and feudal lords. If Konoha dared to defy the entire aristocracy, the four other major powers would gladly use their combined forces to annihilate it. The mere possibility of such a rebellion would make the other Daimyos sleepless with paranoia.
"This matter will be resolved through my discussions with the Daimyo," Hiruzen said, tapping his pipe against the desk. "Until then, Root is to focus solely on tracking the whereabouts of Ayaka Uzumaki and Hyuga Mirai. Do not target civilians any further."
His words were final.
Both Koharu and Homura nodded in agreement. If Danzo continued his reckless approach, Konoha would lose all standing within the Land of Fire.
Once the meeting concluded and the others had left, Hiruzen summoned an ANBU operative to inquire about Naruto Uzumaki. Upon learning that the boy was still under the care of Kimura, he finally felt a small sense of relief.
As long as nothing happened to Konoha's Jinchuriki, Hiruzen wasn't too concerned.
Teaching him the "Will of Fire" could wait until he was at least three years old. By then…
By then, Kushina would likely be nearing her limit.

Meanwhile, in Uzushiogakure's Research Facility
Hyuga Mirai frowned as he sensed something unusual. Two of his Edo Tensei reanimations had suddenly collapsed, severing his connection to both Senju Hashirama and Senju Tobirama.
"They broke free?" Mirai muttered to himself. "Impossible. Not with a triple-layered binding seal. 18, what's the status of Hashirama's body?"
"Sir," 18's voice responded instantly, "the reanimated body is still within the cultivation chamber in Uzushiogakure. However, the Edo Tensei form has dissipated, revealing the original host's corpse. Here is the footage."
Mirai watched the screen, narrowing his eyes. Hashirama's body, once preserved through Edo Tensei, now resembled a withered husk—a clear sign of excessive chakra consumption.
"Unlimited chakra regeneration… was a lie?" Mirai murmured, deep in thought. "No… it doesn't add up. Based on the sacrifice used, Hashirama should have had enough chakra to last months without issue. 18, retrieve the body for further study."
A troubling theory began forming in his mind.
Could Edo Tensei actually be siphoning chakra from the afterlife itself?
If so, the implications were enormous.
Still, he had no time for unnecessary speculation. "Prepare a new host and reanimate Hashirama again. We need him for the cultivation project. As for Tobirama… his techniques are already thoroughly documented. His reanimation isn't a priority anymore."
There was no need for Mirai to personally handle such menial tasks.
Orochimaru was the perfect candidate for the job. After all, when it came to the study of forbidden jutsu, no one in Mirai's circle surpassed him.
