After Yamanaka Inoichi and Yamanaka Ino left, the Hokage's office returned to silence.
Sasame leaned in, pressing close to Tsunade's flawless cheek. "Thanks."
"Don't thank me. She's the Yamanaka heir. Taking her as a disciple strengthens ties with the Ino-Shika-Chō trio—beneficial for a newly appointed Hokage like me."
Tsunade's analysis was clinical.
Sasame savored the soft warmth against his skin and nodded.
This was the Hokage's calculus.
Though Tsunade wasn't as power-hungry as Hiruzen, she knew how to play the game.
In the original timeline, she'd taken Haruno Sakura as a student—not just for talent, but because of Uzumaki Naruto and Uchiha Sasuke.
But without those two, Sakura had nothing—no lineage, no political weight.
Maybe her ancestors had been notable. Maybe the author forgot his own setting.
But this was the real shinobi world.
With her mediocre performance, Sakura stood no chance of becoming the Hokage's apprentice.
Sasame brushed his lips against Tsunade's cheek. "I thought it was my efforts last night that convinced you."
"You—!"
Tsunade whirled, her face flushing with anger. "Looking to die?"
"Don't be mad."
Sasame raised his hands in surrender. "You can vent all your rage on me tonight."
"Behave while we're here!"
Tsunade flicked his forehead—hard.
"Tch!" He winced. "My apologies, Hokage-sama."
"Honestly…"
Her expression softened as she rubbed the reddening spot. "I've got work. Don't distract me."
Too kind for her own good.
"What's the issue? The Uchiha inheritance distribution?"
Sasame caught her hand. "I can help."
"That's already handled—Sasuke manages it now."
She pulled free, flipping through a file. "It's the Konoha Military Police Force. The clans are at each other's throats."
Ah, that relic.
The Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju, had created the KMPF and handed it to the Uchiha.
Initially, its authority was vast—overseeing internal security and defense, surpassing even ANBU and ROOT.
But under Hiruzen and Danzō's machinations, the Uchiha were sidelined, forced from their compound.
The KMPF devolved into a glorified neighborhood watch.
The more they handled petty disputes, the worse their reputation became.
Now, with the Uchiha gone, the KMPF was a carcass—and every clan wanted a piece.
The Sarutobi. The Shimura. The Hyūga. The Inuzuka.
Even a crippled institution held power.
Control meant influence, resources—prosperity.
And someone had to take over.
"Yeah, messy."
Sasame skimmed the file, understanding Tsunade's headache.
No matter who got it, someone would be pissed.
"Nee-san, I've got an idea."
He tapped the desk. "Why not split the KMPF? One branch for civilians, another for security."
"That's… new."
Tsunade blinked. "Explain."
"Shinobi handling civilian affairs creates a power imbalance—breeds resentment. The Uchiha's infamy wasn't just their fault."
Tsunade froze—then it clicked.
Damn.
She eyed him. "You sure you don't have a Yin Seal like me?"
Are you secretly some ancient monster in a kid's body?
"Nee-san, you watched me grow up."
He stressed the last three words.
Tsunade's eye twitched. "Why are you so insufferable lately?"
"Because you're irresistible."
He pecked her cheek again.
She turned away, lips quirking—then schooled her face back to Hokage stoicism.
"After the split, then what?"
"The KMPF is Konoha's institution—not a clan's. Best to involve every clan."
Sasame smirked. "As for how to balance the selections… well, that's your expertise."
Expected.
She'd considered it too—but the management was the issue.
Too many clans, too many egos.
They needed a leader with unquestionable authority.
"Flip to the end."
Tsunade pointed at the file.
Sasame did—and laughed.
Every institution needed a head.
The Sarutobi nominated Asuma.
The Shimura nominated Danzō.
The agenda was obvious.
Sarutobi Asuma—the "rebel" whose life path Hiruzen had meticulously planned.
Guardian Ninja to the Daimyō. Mentor to the new Ino-Shika-Chō.
And his girlfriend?
Yūhi Kurenai—a generic genjutsu specialist—somehow ended up teaching Hyūga Hinata, Inuzuka Kiba, and Aburame Shino.
Absurd.
None of them were genjutsu types.
If Asuma were stronger, he'd already be groomed for Hokage.
As for Danzō?
At his age, still clawing for power.
A backdoor play—since ROOT was disbanded (on paper).
(His "disbanded" operatives still obeyed him. Shocking.)
"Who should I pick?"
Tsunade massaged her temples.
"The ideal candidate needs prestige, Will of Fire, strength—and no clan ties."
Sasame set the file down. "Any thoughts?"
"Jiraiya or Orochimaru—but no."
She shook her head. "No third option."
"There is one."
Sasame paused. "Gensō Maruboshi."
"Maruboshi?"
Tsunade's eyes widened.
The eternal genin.
A legend who'd served under the Second, Third, Fourth, and now Fifth Hokage.
Tobirama taught him water jutsu. Hiruzen taught him ninjutsu. Minato bandaged his wounds.
And Tsunade?
She'd later assign him to Konoha's defenses.
(Not yet, though.)
"…He would fit."
Tsunade exhaled, relieved. "Good work today. Rewards later."
Sasame grinned.
"Ugh, wipe that look off your face!"
She pinched his cheeks, laughing despite herself.
"Go review those archives."
She stood, kissing his forehead with a mwah.
The "archives" were Konoha's historical records—Tsunade's excuse to "prepare him for Hokage duties."
Hence, his mention of Maruboshi didn't surprise her.
"Got it."
Sasame had his own agenda. "Call if you need me."
Tsunade stiffened. "Tch."
"…?"
"I meant work help. What's wrong with you?"
"You're the one acting shameless lately!"
She shooed him. "Go."
Outside, Ino waited, arms stacked with files.
"Sakura's question?"
Sasame cut to the chase. "Send her to Yakushi Nonō at the hospital."
"Thank you!"
Ino beamed.
Nonō wasn't Tsunade—but she was elite. More than enough for Sakura.
Ino's motives were pure—friendship.
Ah, youth.
Sasame eyed her books. "Shizune's tough, but it's not torture."
"Of course not!"
Ino shook her head, ponytail swaying. "I'll do my best!"
"…Can I ask something?"
Sasame brushed aside her bangs, revealing her right eye. "Doesn't this block your vision?"
Ino froze, face burning.
"Sorry."
He withdrew. "Just thought your eyes are too pretty to hide."
In his past life, he'd always found young Ino's fringe unflattering.
(She grew into it later.)
From anyone else, this'd be harassment.
But with Sasame's face?
Ino turned scarlet, stammering, "I-I'll change it if you don't like it!"
Then she fled.
Sasame chuckled. "Ah, youth."
[Your actions have altered the fates of Yamanaka Ino, Haruno Sakura, Yakushi Nonō, and Gensō Maruboshi. Total Fate Points: 199.]
Higher than expected.
Sakura and Ino's plot relevance must've boosted the value.
Hokage's Secretary Office
"Ah, Sasame."
Hyūga Hizashi greeted him warmly.
Hiashi hadn't revealed Sasame's true strength—but to prevent incidents, he'd told Hizashi that Sasame secured him this position.
Pointless.
Hizashi didn't care.
He'd assumed the role was grunt work—sandwiched between the Hokage and advisors.
But in reality?
He managed two-thirds of Konoha's affairs—eclipsing Homura and Koharu.
The two elders had raged, accusing him of overreach.
His retort? "Hokage's orders."
These days, Hizashi was thriving.
As a branch family member, the Caged Bird Seal had suffocated him.
Watching his son, Neji, treated as a punching bag didn't help.
But here?
He had authority.
Clans that once sneered at him now groveled.
To him, Sasame was a benefactor—on top of being the Hokage's disciple.
"Need a favor."
Sasame got straight to it. "Any recent missing or dead shinobi?"
"Plenty."
Hizashi frowned. "High-risk profession."
"Compile a list for me."
To make Danzō flee, he needed irrefutable evidence.
Like Hashirma Cell experiments.
(ROOT's atrocities didn't stop there, of course.)
Sasame's plan?
Pin missing-nin cases on Danzō, spark an investigation.
Hiruzen might've survived scrutiny—but Danzō? Never.
Even old Hashirama Cell leaks would ruin him.
Then?
See if Homura and Koharu could keep their mouths shut.
"One more thing."
Sasame lowered his voice. "The elders have been harassing you, right?"
Hizashi nodded warily.
"Go harder. Insult them. Provoke them."
"…That's unwise."
"I'll take responsibility."
Sasame met his gaze. "Or ask Hiashi."
Hizashi's eyes widened.
That implied… collusion?
"Understood."
He'd confirm with Hiashi first.
The elders still held some power.
Angering them risked Hyūga repercussions—especially for the branch family.
"Thanks."
Sasame left with the missing-nin files.
If Hiashi was smart, he'd agree.
