Chapter 478: 477-Common Thread
The Hokage's office was cloaked in the soft glow of dawn, the first rays of sunlight filtering through the tall windows and casting elongated shadows across the room. Hiruzen Sarutobi sat alone at his desk, the air thick with the scent of ink and parchment. His calloused fingers moved deftly, penning the final lines of a scroll that bore the weight of a nation's future.
He paused, the quill hovering above the parchment, as his gaze drifted to the two scrolls lying beside him. One was addressed to the Fire Daimyō, detailing future strategic plans and resource allocations in the event he meets his end during this war. The other bore the names of his family—his sons—a personal letter filled with words he hoped they'd never have to read.
With a resolute sigh, Hiruzen set down his quill and reached for the Hokage seal. The wax melted swiftly under the flame, and he pressed the seal firmly onto each scroll, the emblem of the Leaf imprinting with authority and finality.
He leaned back, eyes closed, allowing the silence to envelop him. Memories of the Second Shinobi War surfaced—friends lost, sacrifices made, and the heavy mantle of leadership thrust upon him. Now, as the Third Great War had practically begun, he felt the same weight pressing down, but with the added burden of age.
"If I must give my life for the village," he mused, "then I must ensure it's left in capable hands."
Just like the Second Division, with the successful breakthrough of the first divisions, all other divisions were in their final preparations.
In the southern sector of the Land of Fire, nestled behind a protective wall of flowering cherry trees and stone barriers reinforced with subtle seals, lay the compound of the Third Division of Konoha's War Machine, the Medical & Support Corps. Normally a place of quiet recovery and learning, today it was alive with urgency, the grounds echoing with the sounds of barked orders, chakra buzz, and hurried footsteps over packed earth and wooden floors.
Tsunade Senju, the renowned Sannin and Konoha's preeminent medical-nin, stood at the centre of the training grounds beneath the sloped roof of the central hall. Dressed in a sleeveless green haori over a simple grey kimono, her arms were crossed as she watched the flurry of activity before her with a sharp, evaluating gaze. There was no leniency in her expression, only hardened discipline tempered by experience—and the unspoken grief of lives she had failed to save in past wars.
"Again!" she barked.
Rows of young medical-nin sprang into motion around her. On tatami mats laid out across the grounds were dozens of practice dummies shaped like human bodies, complete with internal chakra pathways simulated by thin threads of pulsing light. The trainees—some genin, most chūnin—pressed their glowing hands over simulated wounds, striving to mend torn chakra circuits and close lacerations with pinpoint accuracy.
Sweat dripped down their faces. The effort required to focus medical chakra—fine-tuned and delicate—was exponentially more taxing under pressure. Some winced as their chakra faltered; others hissed curses under their breath when their targets emitted a high-pitched buzz of failure.
Tsunade moved among them like a storm with a surgeon's precision.
"Too slow, Daigo. That man's already dead. Try again."
She stopped beside a young kunoichi whose hands were trembling as she worked to stop an arterial bleed in a practice dummy.
"Good control on the surface level," Tsunade muttered, then jabbed a finger at the girl's stomach. "But you're too shallow. Real wounds are three layers deep—skin, muscle, and chakra. You patch the skin, and the patient will bleed out before you stabilize their core. Start over."
"Y-Yes, ma'am!"
Tsunade's voice dropped low as she turned to face the broader group.
"Precision is key," she said, her tone like steel. "On the battlefield, every second counts. A single misstep, a delay, and you're not healing a comrade—you're writing their death certificate."
From the corner, an aide hurried in with a tray of medical files and supplies. "Tsunade-sama, the poison extraction team is ready for review."
Tsunade nodded and moved toward the side annex, where another group of medical-nin worked over sealed vials of various venoms. Laid out in a neat row were toxicants collected from prior engagements—paralytics, neurotoxins, and corrosives taken from Suna shinobi and rogue shinobi. Small explosions of green mist occasionally erupted from a sealed tent as detoxification jutsu were tested, often resulting in coughs or mild nausea when improperly handled.
A single mistake in this section could be fatal, and the atmosphere reflected that.
Near the eastern corridor of the compound, the Support Corps trained under senior chakra specialists. A special subset of shinobi here practised chakra enhancement techniques—methods to strengthen allies during battle by transferring chakra reserves, or using support-focused fuinjutsu to temporarily boost speed, strength, or durability.
The Yamanaka clan had their own wing here too, contributing uniquely to triage. In one section, several clan members sat in a circle of drawn sealing marks, hands locked as they maintained a mass mind-link. The technique allowed them to monitor the vitals of shinobi on the field in real-time, allowing for instant diagnosis and alerts to be sent via mental transmissions to med-nin.
Back outside, Tsunade stood on a raised wooden platform, her gaze sweeping across the training compound. She could see the strain and the sweat. The shakiness of young hands. The determination etched into eyes that were still too young to understand the weight of what was coming.
Tsunade clenched her jaw.
"We won't be enough," she whispered, barely audible over the wind. "But we'll try."

Atop a high tower overlooking Konoha, the Sensory & Communications Division maintained vigilance. A senior Yamanaka elder coordinated efforts, ensuring seamless communication between divisions.
Hyūga clan members, their Byakugan activated, scanned the horizon for any signs of enemy movement. Their eyes, capable of seeing great distances and chakra signatures, were invaluable in early threat detection.
Yamanaka operatives relayed information through mental links, creating a web of communication that spanned the village and beyond. Their efforts ensured that every unit remained informed and connected.

In the shadows of Konoha, the Ambush & Assassination Division prepared for covert operations. Jiraiya, ever the unconventional leader, briefed his team with a mix of humour and gravity.
Danzo Shimura, who despite being a part of the High command also had his hold on this division, observed silently, his presence a reminder of the division's darker undertakings.
Aburame clan members, cloaked and enigmatic, released swarms of insects to scout and sabotage. Root-trained shinobi, products of Danzo's secretive program, practised lethal techniques designed for swift and silent kills.
====
At the village's gates, the Heavy Defense & Siege Counter Division fortified defenses. The Hyūga patriarch, a stoic figure with an air of nobility, led drills alongside his twin sons, Hiashi and Hizashi.
Hyūga members practiced their Gentle Fist techniques, their movements fluid and precise, capable of disabling foes with minimal effort. Akimichi warriors stood ready, their size and strength a formidable barrier against any assault.
Senju clan members, though fewer in number, contributed their wood-release techniques to bolster fortifications, creating barriers and traps to deter enemy advances.
Despite the distinct roles and specialities of each division, a common thread wove through them all: the presence of Yamanaka clan members. Their unique abilities ensured that every unit remained connected, their minds linked in a vast network of information and coordination.
Hiruzen, receiving the news of their preparations, felt a surge of pride. The unity and dedication displayed by each division reaffirmed his belief in Konoha's strength.
"They are ready," he thought. "And so am I."
