Chapter 369: 368-Euphoria
The world around him seemed to freeze. The battle-hardened dirt beneath his feet, the distant rustling of leaves in the evening breeze, even the subtle rise and fall of his own chest—all of it dulled in the wake of the sound that echoed in his mind.
Something inside Renjiro shifted. No, not just shifted—unlocked. It was as if a hidden door within him had been thrust open, and from its depths, an untamed, surging power rushed forth, flooding his muscles, his bones, his very essence.
"Boom!"
A violent green aura erupted around him, crackling with raw energy, swirling like his emerald flames and distorting the air with sheer intensity. His skin burned red from the rush of blood, his veins bulging with unnatural force as the limits placed upon his body shattered.
This was the power of the Sixth Gate—the Gate of Joy, a name as cruel as it was apt. Agony and euphoria collided, flooding his veins with liquid lightning.
Renjiro inhaled sharply, his breath a heady mix of exhilaration and euphoria. His body felt weightless, as though he had shed the burden of exhaustion entirely. Force coursed through his limbs in exhilarating waves, his muscles coiled like springs wound to their absolute limit, ready to unleash devastating force at a moment's notice.
"Ha… haha…" Renjiro's laughter bubbled uncontrollably.
Every movement he made felt effortless, every action instantaneous. He could feel his chakra thrumming through his system like a roaring river, untamed and unrelenting.
'So this… this is the power of the Sixth Gate!'
Across from him, Might Duy's stance shifted subtly, his usually warm and carefree eyes narrowing in focus. The air pressure had changed, the weight of Renjiro's presence bearing down on him like a storm front rolling in. His lips pressed into a thin line.
'This boy… He opened the Sixth Gate so quickly. If he can do this at his age…'
Duy's fists clenched at his sides. He had trained for years, decades, to reach this level, and yet Renjiro had stepped into it with a frightening ease. But Duy was no fool—he knew his limits well.
The Sixth Gate was beyond what his body could handle in a mere spar. He had mastered it, yes, but the backlash was still extreme. His recovery time would be too long, and too dangerous. If he opened it now and his body failed him afterwards… no, that was a risk he couldn't afford to take.
'This is a spar, not a deathmatch. I have to be smart about this.'
"Whoosh!"
Renjiro moved. No—he blinked. The air screamed as he vanished, reappearing inches from Duy's face. His fist, wreathed in viridian light, arced toward the man's jaw.
"Crack!"
Duy's head snapped back, blood spraying. He skidded across the training ground, boots carving furrows, but his grin split the dust cloud.
"Youthful escalation!" he roared, slamming a palm to his chest.
"Fifth Gate—OPEN!"
"Boom."
Duy's chakra erupted. His skin darkened to burnt umber, veins bulging like cables. The ground beneath him cratered, shockwaves rippling outward.
Their eyes met.
Then they moved.
Renjiro vanished in a blur. The ground where he had stood exploded from the sheer force of his takeoff, sending dirt and dust flying into the air. In less than a blink, he was upon Duy, his bō staff whipping through the air with impossible speed.
Duy barely had time to react. His instincts screamed at him to dodge, and he did—just barely. The staff skimmed past his face, so fast it sent a sharp gust of wind cutting across his cheek.
Renjiro didn't stop. He pressed forward, each strike faster, heavier, more relentless. His body was a hurricane of motion, his staff a blur of green light as he attacked from every conceivable angle.
"Whoosh!"
"Crack!"
"Thud!"
Each blow sent shockwaves rippling outward, carving deep fissures into the ground.
Duy, though outmatched in raw speed and power, was crafty. He didn't waste movement. Instead, he redirected Renjiro's momentum, shifting his weight in ways that allowed him to narrowly avoid the brunt of each attack.
'He's strong. Too strong.'
Duy gritted his teeth. His arms stung from the force of blocking Renjiro's attacks. Even the ground beneath him was beginning to crumble under the sheer onslaught. He needed to find an opening.
Then, he saw it.
Renjiro overextended slightly—a minuscule miscalculation, barely noticeable to anyone else. But Duy was an expert at spotting such things.
'There!'
Duy twisted his body mid-dodge, using his momentum to drive his fist upward. His punch connected with Renjiro's midsection with a sickening crack!
Renjiro skidded backwards, coughing from the impact, but his body was already healing at a rapid pace thanks to the effects of his chakra seinou. Instead of slowing down, he grinned, eyes blazing with excitement.
'This power… it's intoxicating!'
Renjiro lunged again, his speed reaching an entirely new level. Duy's pupils contracted—he barely had time to register Renjiro's movements before another crushing strike came barreling toward him.
He couldn't dodge.
The impact sent him flying. He crashed into the ground, rolling several meters before slamming his feet down to stabilize himself. He coughed, wiping a bit of blood from his mouth, then exhaled.
'I'm being overwhelmed…'
Duy had sparred against many opponents in his time, but this? This was something else entirely. Still, he wasn't the kind of man to go down without a fight.
Duy lowered his stance, gathering power in his legs. He would have to start taking risks now.
Renjiro charged forward again. But this time, when his bō came swinging down, Duy didn't dodge. He met the attack head-on.
"Boom!"
His fist connected with the staff. The sheer force sent shockwaves outward, shaking the trees and sending debris flying. The bō wavered from the impact, and for the first time in the fight, Renjiro felt himself losing control of his own momentum.
Duy exploited that moment. He twisted his body, slamming a roundhouse kick straight into Renjiro's side. The impact sent Renjiro spiralling into the air, his body spinning like a ragdoll.
'Damn!'
Renjiro gritted his teeth. He adjusted mid-air, flipping just in time to land on his feet. His muscles burned, but the pain was distant—drowned out by the euphoria of the Sixth Gate.
And then—
A brilliant idea struck him.
A memory.
Might Guy. A technique he used that was so fearsome, so devastating. The Morning Peacock.
Renjiro's green aura began to shift. The vibrant energy surrounding him darkened, taking on a more fiery hue. The air around him shimmered from the heat of his rising chakra.
Duy's eyes widened in alarm.
'What is this technique?!'
He had never seen anything like it before, but his instincts screamed at him—this was dangerous.
Without hesitation, Duy made a split-second decision.
He opened the Sixth Gate.
His red aura exploded outward, nearly consuming the battlefield as he prepared himself for whatever terrifying move Renjiro was about to unleash.
But just as Renjiro was about to execute the attack—just as his chakra coalesced into a force that could scorch the air itself—
"Drip."
A single drop of blood fell from his nose.
Then another.
And another.
Renjiro's entire body seized up. A sharp, piercing pain shot through his skull, and his vision blurred. His body staggered, the raw energy of the gates flickering uncertainly around him.
He knew immediately—his body wasn't ready.
With a sharp inhale, he forced the gates to close.
The vibrant green aura vanished, leaving behind only exhaustion and a lingering sense of frustration.
Renjiro wiped the blood from his nose with the back of his hand and exhaled, shaking his head.
"...It seems," he muttered, breathing heavily, "...I'm still far from being able to pull that off."
The Gates slammed shut.
