Sarutobi Asuma was rebellious from birth. His father being the Hokage and his brother being one of Konoha's Eight Colors meant he was older than his classmates when he entered the Ninja Academy—four or five years older. As an adult, he left Konoha due to disagreements with the Third Hokage, becoming one of the Twelve Guardian Ninja.

By the time he was fourteen or fifteen, Sarutobi Asuma had merely gone through the motions at the academy to obtain his ninja status. His actual skill was already at the chūnin level, nearing jōnin-level.

However, like everyone else, Sarutobi Asuma was overwhelmed by Kai's killing intent and the sudden slaughter. He was paralyzed with fear, his eyes widening as Kai's shadow approached like the Grim Reaper.

"Move! Move!" he screamed internally, but his body was stiff, only trembling.

Was he going to die?

Thoughts raced through his mind as the blade loomed closer.

"Whoosh!"

A whoosh echoed. A small figure appeared before him.

Clang!

A sharp metallic clang rang out, sparks flying.

"Uchiha Itachi?"

Sarutobi Asuma and the others were surprised that Kai hadn't suppressed Itachi, but a voice whispered in his ear, making him tense.

"You used pain to overcome your fear. That's not bad," Kai smiled warmly. "But your three-tomoe Sharingan isn't enough. Otherwise, you wouldn't have blocked my attack."

Uchiha Itachi was stunned, a ridiculous thought crossing his mind. But a lightning-wreathed hand pierced his chest.

"Game over!" Kai smiled playfully.

Hot blood sprayed, splattering Sarutobi Asuma's face.

Seeing Kai kill even his own younger brother, the graduates were shocked.

Without Itachi's interference, Kai was like a wolf among sheep. Each swing of his blade claimed a life. In mere seconds, all forty-eight graduates lay in pools of blood.

Madness!

Kushina's face turned pale. This was a heinous crime. She couldn't engage the Susanoo, but Kai's gaze sent a shock through her.

"Let's go," Kai said, appearing before Kushina with the speed of lightning. She finally understood why Kai was rumored to surpass Minato.

"Help! Someone! Uchiha Kai is killing the graduates!"

Screams echoed through the academy. Anbu, Jiraiya, and Tsunade appeared. They'd been about to go to Ichiraku Ramen to study the medicinal cuisine when this happened.

"Rou, what happened?!" The Third Hokage descended from the sky. Ninjas from Konoha rushed to the scene, including Uchiha Fugaku.

"Hokage-sama, letting Uchiha Kai supervise the exam was a mistake," Sarutobi Rou said, his face pale, grabbing the Third Hokage's wrist. "He let Itachi take the exam, and when I objected, he killed Yamanaka Inoichi and Nara Shikaku."

"Go quickly! I only had Kushina stop him. If you're too late, all forty-eight students will be dead."

Everyone was moved by Sarutobi Rou's frantic state, even Uchiha Fugaku. But with his Sharingan, Fugaku noticed something.

"Rou, you're under genjutsu..."

Jiraiya, Tsunade, and the Third Hokage, experienced ninjas, said in unison.

"Let me handle this," Uchiha Fugaku breathed a sigh of relief. He couldn't use his Mangekyō Sharingan in public. But knowing Rou was under genjutsu, and outside the caster's range, his Sharingan was enough.

Crimson light filled his eyes, three tomoe appearing. He shouted,

"Break!"

His roar echoed in Shinnosuke's mind. Powerful chakra surged into Rou's mind. His body shook, and he groaned, blood trickling from his mouth. The negative emotions vanished. He saw the Third Hokage and the others clearly.

"This... this was genjutsu?" Sarutobi Rou touched his body, expecting blood, but there was none.

"Impossible!" He rushed to the courtyard.

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief but was also horrified. A graduation exam had turned into this. Even Sarutobi Rou, one of Konoha's Eight Colors, had been affected.

"Hokage-sama, I'll teach that brat a lesson," Uchiha Fugaku said urgently.

But he was met with a glare.

"Fugaku, don't act. Even all of us together couldn't teach him a lesson," Jiraiya said helplessly.

"This is the most hellish graduation exam ever. I wonder if anyone survived. If there's a mental death, that's a problem," Tsunade said. She'd planned to avoid Kai, but this changed things.

"Let's go. Hopefully, he hasn't caused too much trouble. The parents will be furious," the Third Hokage said, feeling a headache coming on.

They arrived at the courtyard, seeing Sarutobi Rou standing there, and the students frozen in genjutsu. Tsunade's expression changed.

"To trap so many in genjutsu simultaneously... his genjutsu mastery is incredible. Without preparation, we wouldn't have escaped so easily," Tsunade said.
