Chapter 80: Chapter 80: On Purpose
Kazuo Uchiha saw right through Chinya's intentions, but it was already too late.
Jiraiya and a group of ninjas had already tracked them down here.
All Kazuo could do was argue that Chinya had deliberately provoked him.
Chinya shrugged and said, "Please, you were the one who came looking for me in the first place and threatened me, yet now you accuse me of insulting you? Insulting the Uchiha? Deliberately provoking you into attacking me? Are all of you Uchihas shameless liars like you?"
Kazuo's face turned bright red with anger. "That wasn't a threat—it was merely a warning!"
Chinya turned to Jiraiya and asked, "Jiraiya-sama, do you think the phrase 'you're only here temporarily and will eventually return to Konoha' sounds more like a warning or a threat?"
Jiraiya shot Kazuo Uchiha an obvious look of disgust.
A warning? No way—that sure as hell sounded like an outright threat!
As Kazuo tried to defend himself again, Jiraiya cut him off with a sharp glare. "I'll just ask one question—did you strike first?"
Kazuo quickly replied, "Yes, but..."
Before Kazuo could even finish his 'but,' Jiraiya interrupted again. "No need to say more. You actively tracked down Chinya, threatened him, and even attacked him first—who do you think you are?
Now of all times, when we should be uniting and working together, you're still hung up on your own vendetta. Can't you tell what matters more? How did you even become a Jonin?
Enough, don't waste my time anymore. Come with me to see Orochimaru—we'll let him decide what kind of punishment you deserve!"
Kazuo was completely paralyzed by fear.
That bastard Chinya was far too cunning—he kept verbally provoking the Uchiha Clan on purpose, intentionally pushing Kazuo to attack first so others would arrive afterward.
Now no matter how much Kazuo defended himself, it was useless.
After all, he was the one who went looking for Chinya, and he was also the one who started the fight. The punishment was inevitable.
And worse, the verdict would come from Orochimaru, who was known for being ruthless and showing no mercy. Now Kazuo was really doomed.
Kazuo hung his head dejectedly and followed behind Jiraiya.
Chinya's sinister voice came again from behind Kazuo. "You four! A squad of about ten Cloud Ninja is heading your way soon! You go ahead and ambush them first. I suspect there might be an ambush nearby, so I won't intervene for now. I'll go look for the hidden Cloud Ninja.
Not even if it means death! Am I clear?! Do you all understand me?"
Kyousuke Uchiha and the others gaped at Chinya in utter disbelief.
This squad had around ten Cloud Ninja—mostly Chunins, led by a Tokubetsu Jonin. How could the four of them—mere Chunins—possibly ambush such an elite squad? This was basically a suicide mission!
Kazuo abruptly turned his head around and fixed a deadly glare at Chinya.
Earlier, Chinya had warned him, *The more you threaten me, the harder I'll make them pay.*
This was Chinya's revenge against him—a deliberate act of retaliation aimed at punishing Kyousuke Uchiha and the others.
With a furious snarl, Kazuo roared at Chinya, "Chinya!"
Chinya lifted his gaze toward Uchiha Kazuo and said calmly, "What? Do you still have something to say to me?"
Jiraiya himself couldn't bear to listen much longer either.
Jiraiya was now certain—Chinya had definitely provoked Uchiha Kazuo into attacking him on purpose.
And all those words Chinya had just spoken to Uchiha Kyousuke and the other three were clearly meant for Uchiha Kazuo's ears.
Jiraiya tried to persuade him, saying, "Alright, Chinya. That should be enough. Don't push your teammates too hard—he'll face serious consequences regardless."
Chinya replied coolly, "Jiraiya-sama, how could this possibly be pushing them? Every mission carries risks. We should always be ready to give our lives when duty calls. If they don't even understand that basic notion, what business do they have being ninja at all?
Besides, I didn't send them off to die recklessly. I only asked them to launch a surprise attack first while I checked whether there are Cloud Ninja hiding nearby. I guarantee that as long as I'm alive, none of them will die. Isn't that acceptable?"
Uchiha Kyousuke and the other three were really frustrated right now.
They truly felt helpless about Uchiha Kazuo's actions.
They had already become Chinya's subordinates—an unchangeable fact—and were originally worried that Chinya might make things difficult for them.
Now, Chinya would certainly have even more reasons to do so.
Was he deliberately ensuring these few wouldn't have any good days left?
Frowning tightly, Jiraiya said, "Chinya, in any case, don't go overboard. Leave some leeway."
Chinya nodded and said, "Understood, Jiraiya-sama."
Sighing helplessly, Jiraiya shook his head and departed with Uchiha Kazuo.
Those present cast Chinya extremely odd glances.
Almost everyone was thinking the same thing:
Don't cross Chinya—or you'll end up outsmarted by that sly fox.
Chinya looked once again at Uchiha Kyousuke and the other three, smiled slightly at them, and said, "Follow me!"
When Uchiha Kyousuke and the others saw Chinya's smile, chills ran down their spines. They hadn't done anything wrong at all—so why was misfortune always falling on them?
Yet they had no choice but to obey Chinya's command. Grudgingly, Uchiha Kyousuke and the three followed after him.
...
Uchiha Kazuo followed Jiraiya to Orochimaru's room.
Jiraiya recounted everything that had happened earlier to Orochimaru.
Orochimaru fixed a cold stare on Uchiha Kazuo: "You Uchiha sure know how to cause trouble—even now, you had the nerve to pull something like this!"
Uchiha Kazuo kept his head lowered, not daring to meet Orochimaru's gaze.
The deed was done, and since Orochimaru was Chinya's master, he naturally would take Chinya's side. There was nothing more Uchiha Kazuo could say.
However, he was confident he wouldn't end up like Nobuto Uchiha, getting sent back to Konoha.
After all, he was a Jonin. With strong shinobi in short supply these days, there was no need to fear dismissal over this.
As Uchiha Kazuo expected, Orochimaru did not order his return to Konoha.
"Uchiha Kazuo," Orochimaru declared next, "from this moment forward, for the upcoming period, you must participate in every battle for attacking the Cloud Ninja Outpost. You shall also serve actively as part of the vanguard combat unit!"
Kazuo Uchiha's pupils narrowed.
Orochimaru's order amounted to sending him straight to the front as cannon fodder—the danger was obvious.
Kazuo grunted a stifled "yes" before storming out.
After Kazuo left, Jiraiya expressed his concern: "Orochimaru, aren't you worried? Chinya has utterly provoked the Uchiha Clan. Who knows what kind of retaliation might come when he returns to Konoha someday."
Orochimaru replied without the slightest worry: "Chinya and the Uchiha Clan have always been oil and water—completely incompatible. Don't underestimate Chinya either. He clearly has no fear of retaliation from the Uchiha."
